  1. I just got my unit back from Moor.  They serviced due to some bad sensors that needed replacing.  Used it the other day after getting it back and received some very weird readings.  Temp guage seemed to work fine, but boat speed seemed to be in reverse.  The faster I increased surface speed, the lower the subtroll would read.  And the more I slowed the boat down, the faster the subtroll read. I called Moor and they thought that it was down currents.  The readings were so completely inaccurate, that I don't think that was the case.

This is what was happening - If my surface speed was 2, my downspeed was 1.25.  As I increased my surface speed on the same heading, to bring up my downspeed, it actually reduced my downspeed.  When I had my surface speed up to 3.75, my downspeed dropped to .5.   I've fished on other boats with downspeed, and have never seen anything like this.

Any thoughts what would cause this?

  2. I need a hybrid.  Something that's well suited for family fun, tubing, skiing, smallish lake fishing and LO salmon fishing.  Not to hard a question, is it;)  Right now, I do it out of a 1998 17' Sunbird 88 hp outboard and it really has served it's purpose well.  I'm looking for something in the 18-21' range, would probably prefer staying with the outboard and I like fiberglass. For the fun and sun with the family, I really like the deck boat layout, but the low bow probably wouldn't work for LO.  I'm still a few years out from 2 boats, so gotta find something that will do both.

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

Fishing was not hot, but the amazing weather made up for it. Fished from the Mexico launch west almost to the stack on day one. Gin clear water everywhere. Best temp we could find was low 50's in 40 fow. We did nothing in tight, went 0-2 in 40 fow on the surface, but we covered the entire column. One we lost was a good fish - swivel opened, a shame. We were told by others that "we should have been there yesterday".

2nd day we fished north of Sandy Pond past the creeks. With the slight south wind, north of the creeks were best with water temps reaching 54 - just crazy. Water was nicely stained with lots of debris. Went 4-5, nothing with size. Took fish from 5'-15' fow. Firetiger, black/silver/blue/silver all took hits. First fish as we were letting out lines and 4 came before 9 am.

Two great days to be out!

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

Any reports over the past couple days from in front of the Salmon River in 10'-150' FOW??? Sounds like the Steel and jack kings are good out past 400 FOW, but that's too long a run for my boat.

My cousin is coming up tomorrow and we were planning on fishing the river, but since all those coho's moved through a week or two ago, sounds like things have really slowed down. The lake and estuary must be stacked with kings, cause not many have run the river yet - but sounds like those kings in the lake have Fall lock jaw.

Being the river is slow, I'm thinking of putting the boat back in.

  5. The string trick.

I didn't know about this when I ran my wife up to urgent care in Watertown a couple of labor days ago. They did a nice, quick job, but the nurse looked at me funny when they were taking her in and I asked them to save the lure. Sure enough, I got it back, less one trebble.

  6. You can run your fly leader through the fly from the top or bottom, and they can be run either way. Though many of us like it run the other way from the way yours is set up so that the fly material is pulled back over the collar of the fly when being trolled, thus making the fly bigger and provide a bit more attraction.

May seem like just a little thing, but there are many little things in Salmon fishing that make the differance between a skunk and a full box. The other big issue in my opinion is time on the water - not just learning, but time with rods in the water. Many of us pre salmon fishing were used to putting good numbers of fish in the boat. Even great fisherman get skunked occasionally salmon fishing. Put your time in and you will catch. Get good on the little things and you will catch more.

What's the length of your leader between flasher and fly and between flasher and dipsey?
