Trolled the Snake Island / Mellville shoal area last Thursday night for several hours and got skunked...

Get a group of buddies together and rent a charter. You will learn more in that day than in weeks of reading the forum and you will have a good, and safe, time doing it. Ask questions, take pictures mark spots on your GPS etc. Then forget about taking a 14 foot boat on Lake Ontario. Yes there are portions of select days where you might get away with it but it is not worth the risk. The lake can change in a heartbeat and the closer you are to shore the more unpredictable the waves become. No matter what boat you end up in make sure it has all safety equipment available. A vhs radio is particularly essential.

In case anyone was considering this trip I'd suggest waiting a week or so. The young lad and I worked it hard today and there was almost no bait around at all. Never marked a decent hook. Sonar did show a few lake trout hugging the bottom. We were the only boat there so it sure doesn't look like there's much being caught. Beautiful day to be on the lake at least.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you had some luck at the Ducks. Fished Wellington on Friday and while the action wasn't non-stop for us we did get 5 fish. 2 rainbows a brown and 2 small salmon about 8lbs. It was a great day to be on the water though.

Ran out of Bath Ontario to MDI. Nice morning with a few left over rollers from the recent blows. Most of the bait is shallow (under 100 ft.) One small Lake trout the only hit. No other boats out there trolling for Salmon so safe to say its been slow. Going to try Wellington on Friday if weather behaves. Would appreciate anyone's recent results from that area...

Generally when I am there I fish deeper than that. Have my best luck running 120 to 130 FOW with lines spread between 75 and 110. Haven't been there yet this year though so things may be different with it being this early in the year etc.

Love the site. Have searched for something like this for years and never found it. I appreciate the fact that there is a section for those of us on the Northern shore. I fish out of Kingston so generally have to burn a little fuel to get to the fish. Can't wait to get out to the Main Duck island area this year. Also trailer down to Wellington on occasion for a change of scenery. Experience says we need the water a bit warmer before its worth the trip though. Usually like the surface temps to be in the 60s before venturing out. Some warm weather without rain might help. Last season was a write-off with the cold wet spring. I'm encouraged by the reports out of Oswego this year though. It sounds better than last year already so hopefully some of those fish work their way 30 miles south or so. Wish you all tight lines...
