  1. Seems like most use the length of the rod, say 8 - 10 feet. Are you planning on using wire, superline or mono for your Dipsies? We just set up a pair of wire rods, also using the Walker 107s - just waiting for later in the season so we can use them.

Using braid only. I guess that will get them down a bit further than using mono...but I guess i'll need to do a little adjustment to the ratio as braid in the 25lb variety is thinner in diameter than 25 mono. I dont intend to do wire as I dont want to completely change my poles out with ones that will accept wire.

You dont need to change poles. Just heat the tip, pull it off and put a twilli tip on. There like 9 bucks, You will want to run wire after you take your first diver shot and your cant reel any line in from fleas. Trust me

Again I'm new to all this. What's this "flea" talk about?

  3. Found the answer to my question! I bought the Walker Deeper DIvers from fish usa for 10.99 a piece. I got the 107mm model that dives to 70 feet. I was comparing them with the Luhr Jensons and the walker brand received better reviews and looked a bit sturdier from pictures. Hope I made a good choice in diver. First time trying this stuff and will be getting into Lake ontario for the first time this spring! I got two clear ones and 1 firetiger.

How long a leader should I run off them? Length of fishing pole? or longer and just handline it in till I can reach it with the net?

  4. Name: Jeff

    Location:Massena, ny

    Home Port:

    Boat Name/Type:21 Carolina Skiff

I fish for: walleye, but gonna try browns!

    ==================

Lived in upstate ny for 4 years. Came from a saltwater background in Delaware but have learned freshwater fishing on the st Lawrence. Stumbled on this site and noticed there is some great fishing less than 2 hours away! Plan on doing the trip a few times this year. Just not sure where I should launch at in order to catch some browns!

  5. What downriggers are you looking at? The cannons with the skinny booms wont hold a 12lb weight. 100 ft of cable out with a 8 lb weight would get you down 75 ft if your lucky. That's no joke. I get tons of blowback with 15 lb torpedo if I go over a 100 down

I was considering 2 of these and upsizing to a 12 pound ball.....

    Would these not be good?

  6. Thanks for the advice guys. I appreciate everything I can get. I googled the divers and it seems that the downriggers would be more precise but the pricier option. Since I'm not concerned with the price, I'll go with the 2 downriggers, which will help me get deeper this summer. I'll also buy some divers to experiment. Is there any other equipment I'll need? I have the poles, the downriggers comes with 100ft cable and an 8 pound ball. Another poster stated 12 pound at least so I will upgrade there. Anything else? I read alot on releases, is the releases part of a dr package? Again, total noob. Appreciate the help.

  7. Save your money and get unitrolls at a min. You need at least 12lb weights for deep kings. I would get 2 wire diver setups before id drop money on riggers. Wire divers take the most kings everytime out for me. Take a charter to make sure its what you really want to do.

How deep do they go by summer? I wasn't wanting to spend a lot so I was going with the basic at first. I have no experience with divers either. Can you link me to that product? Thanks for all info! I'm trying to learn.

  8. I'm about 1.5 hours from sacketts harbor. Have only fished st Lawrence river near massena Ny. I'm installing downrigers this week and want to Goto the big lake! So where should I drop my boat in at? I'mclueless and just want a good place to fish. I don't mind dropping boat in somewhere else that's not too terribly far. Any advice on starting spot? Id like to catch browns and salmon early and mid summer.

  9. Live hour and a half from watertown and going to try my hand at lake Ontario. I usually fish the st Lawrence river near massena Ny. To help out I'm going to buy 2 cannon downriggers. They are 129.99 and come with 100 steel wire and an 8 pound ball. Will I need anything else? In the summer will the 100 ft of wire be enough? Never used downriggers before so I'm a total Noob. Is watertown/sacketsi Barbour a good starting spot? If not withered should I launch at? Any tips or advise greatly appreciated on location or equipment. Id like to do browns and salmon this year. Thanks!

  10. After seeing some of the antics on lake Ontario and other water ways in NY , I am 1000% behind this bill . I have had the certificate for years ,as has my son . We test drivers of other motorized vehicles , why should boats be any different ? There are many folks on our waterways that have absolutely no clue what they are doing and it puts all of us at risk.

I agree, but the course will have no impact at all. Why bother? We all agree its nice in theory, but it's just not going to make a difference and after its realized that stupid red tape of a law will still be there.

  11. There are rules out there? Wow can someone tell about 75% of the guys on the east end this. I try to follow the laws of the water out there but if Noone else does it kinda defeats the purpose. Basically it comes down to this I think everyone should have too but it wont change a thing in late aug on the east end. Retard fest

And like I said earlier, you can't teach anyone the rules of the road in a day. I barely can teach it to federal marine agents whose jobs depend on it in a week. Silly initiative. Cash grab, nothing more.

  12. It's foolish to think that a one day boater safety course will change anything. This is just an extra hassle for boaters. It won't be any safer because of the course. This is a cash grab cleverly cloaked as a safety initiative.

I'm a USCG licensed captain with multiple upgrades. I train federal marine agents at the federal law enforcement academy and I can't tell you that you WILL NOT learn the rules of the road In a day. We teach it in a week and that's pushing it.

Cash grab disguised as safety initiative. Hassles and more red tape for boaters. The idiots will still be idiots.

    Just say no.

  13. Pull anchor and mosey into US while waving. Nothing they can do. Sure, they can get your boat registration and try to get you next time. But US side won't give them your registration. I know this, don't ask how though or I will stop giving you the "inside" information. Read between the lines and don't get me in trouble.

On Lake ST. CLAIR, DETROIT RIVER, AND ST. CLAIR RIVER WHERE I LIKE TO FISH FROM MICHIGAN, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO FISH CANADIAN WATERS AS LONG AS YOU DON'T SET ANCHOR. BY SETTING ANCHOR NOW YOU HAVE MADE LANDFALL, IF THIS WAS THE CASE OF THESE 2 FISHERMAN THE AGENT DO HAVE THE RIGHT TO ENFORCE THE LAW. I BELIEVE OVER HERE ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PHONE A PORT OF ENTRY OR CUSTOMS OFFICE AND REPORT YOUR INTENT. VERY CONFUSING LAWS HAVE BEEN MADE SINCE 911 ATTACKS

I don't think the Canadian NATIONAL laws are set by body of water or even province. Apparently, you are right in that you only need to call, but supposedly it needs to be make from special border phones set up at SOME unmanned ports, or else go to an official port and do it in person.

I would like to see a special number you can call from your cell if you will not be making landfall, just fishing etc. The way they have clarified this, it is too oppressive and WILL hurt local tourism and the economy on these border waters as well as putting the local charter capts out of business  Our govts definitely need to find a workable solution!

  14. I called the Canadian port of entry and they stated as long as you don't anchor or make landfall your good. If you do, just call them and they may or may not send an inspector. I have the number if any are interested in calling for themselves. I'm at work on iPhone so I can't get you the number till I get home. This is what they told me.

  15. I think the border agents know their jobs. It's likely that the laws been on the books but not enforced till now. Like I said, kindly lift anchor and wave to them as you go back into US waters. There's nothing they can do. Just don't let them board your boat.

I don't think it reflects badly on Canadians or Canada. It just looks like a few border agents either don't know the laws they are supposed to be enforcing or maybe have gone on a bit of a power trip. Hopefully their superiors will smack them back down to reality and this will all just go away.

  16. I have the 80 terror with ipilot. This is the best upgrade you can make for duplicating fishing success. I pull my 21 foot boat no problems. The pilot track feature is awesome. Once I hit a hot spot in my drift it's recorded. I then just keep drifting back and forth for about 30 ft. Each way. You crush the school of fish. I've never placed worse than 4th since I've had it. It's a must have.
