  1. Great story! Gotta love moments like that that’s exactly why I fish. Nothing like hooking into a giant musky with bass or walleye gear. A couple years back I hooked into what I believe was a big musky on the SLR while trolling for walleye. It was so big I couldn’t even get the rod out of the rod holder. Ended up fighting it for around a minute before it cut my line with its teeth. Heartbreaker for sure but I know any time I’m out it could happen again. Keep the stories coming!

They are not in the west end, they are not in the Salmon in HUGE numbers, so where are they?

I got a report in early to mid September a bunch of them were headed towards Canada. From what I’ve been hearing they’ve been doing very good up there this year too

Don't forget this is the return year of the spring with no pen rearing AND a 50% cut in salmon stocking.

I guess that equals the pile of dog  excrement I’ve seen this year. Forgot about the reduced stocking numbers. Hope this kind of fall season isn’t common or people aren’t gonna come up and fish for them anymore and neither will all the $$$ that comes with them including myself.

  4. I’ve been pier fishing the Genny for roughly 13 years now and I can tell you this is by far THE worst run I’ve ever seen. I fish at night and put in a lot of time and we had one decent night from late August till now. I can probably count on two hands the amount of fish that I actually saw caught. I can also probably count the bottle drops I heard on one hand which is absolutely insane. Never have I seen the total lack of fish around as I’ve seen this year. It’s been almost totally dead for around 2 weeks now if not more.

I heard around the first or second week of September we had bad winds that scattered all the staging fish which has been confirmed in this thread. To me that is absolutely ridiculous that a couple days of “bad” winds would ruin the entire run. If that’s the case these salmon must not have much incentive if any to spawn where they should be. Also we have crappy winds every year for a couple days or more why would this year be any different?  Sounds like the lack of pen raised fish 3 years ago is a major factor and maybe the biggest?  I keep hoping they are still out there and just late to the party but I’m starting to really worry at this point.

It also sounds like us western end fall salmon fishermen are getting the short end of the stick. IMO there is nothing more fun than casting for kings with spoons, crankbaits or whatever else you wanna throw at them and no doubt many agree. I hope we never see a year like this again.

I’m looking for some (late 90’s?) post Rapala Storm deep jr. thundersticks with the clear plastic bills. The picture shows what they looked like they had different color patterns and dive curves then the current thundersticks. If anyone has some around that they are willing to sell please let me know. I’m also looking for some Dave’s Kaboom Shiners as well if anyone is willing to part with a few. Thanks IMG_0052.thumb.JPG.dd3253c2c7a8ea355e33ba4dc847690a.JPG

  6. I’m in the market for a new fishfinder gps combo. I’m looking to spend no more than $700. I’ve basically narrowed it down to two units unless there’s something out there a lot better but I don’t see it.

I’m looking at the Raymarine Dragonfly 7 Pro and the Simrad XSE. I’ve heard good things from both units. The XSE would cost about $200 more than the Dragonfly is it worth the extra cost?

They both have the same resolution but the Simrad has a faster GPS system (10Hz vs 5) and also has a better warranty (3 vs 1). The XSE also has side imaging which the Dragonfly doesn’t but I don’t plan on hardly ever using it because I believe a 7” screen is too small to have everything up at once. What I really care about is the traditional 2D sonar which both have chirp and both have down imaging. The Dragonfly has chirp down imaging but the XSE does not. From what I’ve seen online both units have impressive resolution and target separation. I’m also looking for simplicity. The XSE has NMEA 2000 which is nice but I don’t plan on using it. From what I’ve heard the Dragonfly is pretty much plug and play with very little to tweak.

I will also note I fish shallow water 60 foot max and 99% of the time under 45 feet. Should I just save my money and go with the Raymarine Dragonfly or pony up and go with the Simrad XSE? Both units come with charts but I’m not sure if I would need to upgrade them afterwards or not for my area which could also be a determining factor.

So does anyone have an opinion or experience with either unit?

    Thanks

  7. This is all highly debatable. Ask a hundred people what they like and you’ll get a hundred different answers. I think Power Pro is a solid line it’s a strong durable braid where Nanofil is more of a finesse type of line. Nanofil is supposed to have the ultimate sensitivity but it has problems. It has virtually no abrasion resistance if you look at it wrong it will fray so a leader is a must and it has no shock resistance at all oh and did I mention it’s knots slip very easily so you have to use more advanced knots or it will fail. That’s why I like Power Pro cause even if it’s not the best at any one thing it’s not really bad at anything either (besides the line bleeding). I haven’t used either line for jig fishing I’ve used them for casting spoons and I’ve lost a ton of tackle on Nanofil from either the poor shock resistance, the fraying or knot slipping but it is sensitive and it casts far but it’s not worth the problems. I’ve also used other braids and had some issues and keep coming back to PP. As for leaders a lot of people seem to hype up fluorocarbon but I think most of it is overrated garbage. There are a few that are good but it’s not as strong as mono you can take that to the bank and I know plenty of guys that catch a ton of walleye using mono leaders. I’m not sold on the whole invisibility thing of fluorocarbon either heck one of the best leaders out there for invisibility is Maxima Ultragreen which is a mono. Leader length is also debatable one guy will tell you 7’ while the next guy says he only uses a 2’ foot leader and has success but for trolling it’s supposed to be 20’+. In the end it’s whatever works for you that catches fish with as little problems as possible.

  8. Yeah that's right Jim. That 120 grain is the biggest factory load for the .257 and slowest also. I'll be shooting the 110 grain Nosler Accubonds out of mine at 3460 fps. The Barnes 80 grain TTSX bullets are flying at almost 3900 fps!!!  I think those would take a deer no problem as well.

  9. I'm still waiting on a .257 Weatherby Magnum Vanguard Accuguard that was bought back in December. I've heard great things about the .257 Weatherby Magnum cartridge . It's lights out on deer and a laser beam out to 500 yards or more. From what I've read recoil is about that of a .270 or slightly less. Don't have the gun yet so I can only go by what I've read.

Negatives are it's only available in Weatherby and Remington 700 guns I believe. Also the ammo is extremely expensive and extremely hard to find and has to be special ordered cause no one carries it. Not a deal breaker for me because I won't be shooting it much I'll be lucky if I shoot more than 5-10 rounds a year after sight in.
