  1. Went out solo and set up about 6:30pm in 100ft of water with a stiff north-east wind. Since there was a good chop decided to go aggressive with my presentation and put two dipsy rods out with flasher and fly, one set at 2, 175 out and the other at 2, 150 feet. That rod gets hit hard and the fish takes 400 feet off my rod. I could tell this was going to be my biggest salmon ever. Slowly brought him in and when I got him near the boat he just wouldn't come up to the surface. Had a hell of a time getting him in the net. Netting a fish solo is always an adventure and I should have shortened up the leader between the dipsy and flasher before sending it out. This is my third year fishing Lake O and I hadn't been able to get a fish over 20lbs so that was my goal this year. Weighed in at 22lbs.

Ric can you tell me how long of a leader you run from the Dipsey to the Flasher? Also do you use snap swivel at both connections?

  2. Love smoked lake trout. It’s more mild than salmon and lacks the sweetness but is very good. I prefer hickory for smoking.

I also prepare it like other salmon recipes. Grilled after a vodka, brown sugar, salt, pepper marinade.  Foil pack with butter, garlic salt, and pepper.

  3. I fished at Sodus Point today from the public launch. When we returned from fishing and I was straightening things on my boat and trailer in the parking lot a fella approached my buddy and i and introduced himself as Dave LeRoy a member of the Sodus Point Town Board. He asked me what I thought about the new dock.at the launch. I told him I thought it was a massive and positive improvement and that i had heard many of my friends say the same that had recently used it.. He then queried me about any suggestions I might have about it.  I suggested that we go down to the dock so I could better show him what suggestions might greatly improve use for fishermen and recreational boaters alike. We went to the dock and I indicated that the front of the dock (furthest east. out in the water where you come in from the bay) really needs some protective vinyl to cover the corner and front edge and also a strip of it about at least half way along the length of the dock from there toward the launch pad. This would both protect the dock and peoples boats from damage both from docking when coming in and from rubbing while tied up. I then mentioned the deteriorated condition of the pavement sections leading down to the water and especially the pot holes, and lack of pavement near the dock itself which can lead to trailer tires falling into it and possibly damaging them or axles etc.. The gap between the pavement and the further section which is currently under water was pointed out as well. I mentioned that people invest a lot of money in their boats and equipment and that the corner of the dock situated as it is could punch a hole in or otherwise scratch or damage the bow or hull of a boat. Dave took pics of the items mentioned and indicated that he will report them to the board for further review/possible action. He did not promise anything but I was very impressed that he and the town board were open to suggestions from the folks actually using the facility and I am hopeful at least that they will implement the suggestions as they are very straight forward and not terribly expensive things that could greatly improve the launch and dock for the public. I left feeling very grateful for having the opportunity for giving feedback and hope the board will act to help out the public in this way and maybe even prevent potential liability situations from occurring relating to the damaging of boats and trailers.  I noted that many LOU members use the launch and hundreds or thousands of fishermen may see this on LOU. A big thank you to Dave and the board for their consideration[emoji2] If I have missed anything here  Dave provided his email address but unfortunately it doesn't work as given.

  4. Lake Trout are very good, when treated properly.  When the fish gets in the boat, it should be bled and iced immediately.  Most of the "gamey" or "fishy" flavor that LT's carry is from poor handling.  As for smoking, I prefer to dry-brine my fish (2-3 parts brown sugar: 1 part kosher salt) for about an hour, and as mentioned, any discolored meat should be trimmed.  Smaller fish tend to be less gamey than their larger brethren, and are preferred when keeping for table fare.  There is no such thing as trash fish, just trash cooks.
Can you tell me how long you Smoke it for? What kind of wood preferred? And is there a preferred temp to smoke at? Thanks .

  5. Yeah....that's why I like I-bay. It's my home water and it's a challenge. Very much an overlooked fishery but I like it that way. Only in the last 2 seasons did I every catch an eye under 18".  24"-26" is very common for me. But I have to work for them. Hence the night shifts all the time.
I'm going to fish it this year! How did you do so far? Did you get out?

  6. I was considering a 80 lb. 60 in. From all my searches I have never seen a 54 in Terrova with I pilot. Just 45, 60 and 82. Are you sure about the 54 shaft? How old is it ?

  7. Hi all- found this site and it looked interesting to me. I have a 2017 Lund Rebel XS Sport 1750 that I have been enjoying this summer. My goal here is to share knowledge that I have and gain some from the true experts as well so we all can have better fishing experiences.

I am new to trolling out on the lake as I used to fish the creeks and lower Niagara for Salmon, Steelies, and everything else.

I fish out of Olcott and Wilson.

Ive been using a dipsy set up with flasher/fly combo on one and a Magnum on the other. Last week managed to bring in a 20 lb’ish steelie. My son had a nice King on that got away- live and learn!

So here is my rookie question for my type of boat- I havent installed a downrigger setup yet partially for fear of not knowing what to get and also because I was learning with the dipsy’s- baby steps! For a boat my size w/the lund track system what would be the best (not to break the bank) mounting bracket for a cannon or scotty set up?

    Thanks to all!!!
    Dave

I just bought a Lund and it had two Downrigger Brackets that slide into Sport Track and have a set Screw on outside, it also has Canon Swivel Mounts on Bracket, I took them off and will not be using them for two Reasons, the first reason is I am going to be using Traxtech tracks the full length of my Boat, and the Second reason is I have Scotty Downrigger and the Mounts are for Canon Downriggers, if you are interested I can sell you these at a Fair Price? Pm Me if interested if not that's ok too, just thought I'd throw it out thereIMG_20180828_125543214.jpgIMG_20180828_125530395.jpg
