I have a brand new 80 lb thrust 24 volt Minnkotta as my trolling motor. I need a electric start, electric trim  40 hp to get me across the large/medium size lakes with wind. So the 9.9 as the primary doesn't cut it. But thanks and ask around for one.

Well my AZ 9.9 Evinrude worked great out on those small, calm AZ lakes. AZ like many states have a size limit of 10 hp or less, thus my 9.9 fits. But Vermont's larger bodies of water has got me re-thinking my equipment. I think I might be better off with a 30 to 40 hp engine as my primary. Anybody have a good used 30- 40 hp tiller style or know of one for sale. Anyone interested in my 9.9 Evinrude for trolling? I called most of the marinas and zero results..."we can order you one".. LOL

No...Actually the first one had two Alewives in his mouth and still took my lure. That's when I changed my second line to a Alewives looking lure and got the second one in minutes. I was told that the N.E. Kingdom lake were free of Alewives and lamprey eels. I doubled checked VT Game & Fish color chart hoping they were smelt or anything else. Nope. They are in the in-land locked lake.

So far only the Vermont bottom end. Don't have a Canadian license. Up there is the deep water, down in VT mostly 25-27 ft average. But I found a couple holes. LOL  Got-em. 

After towing my 16 ft. AlumaCraft 3,000 miles from AZ it finally got wet in Vermont waters. Understanding that the Salmon run was in April here in the N.E Kingdom I gave it a shake down run and picked up two Salmon. Both 18", 2+ lbs. . 30ft. out the back, 25+ down, Ivan's lures. Was a little surprised to see that the first one had two Alewifes in it's mouth/throat and still took my lure. I didn't think they were in lakes other than Champlain. So I changed the second line to a Crazy Ivan's #069 Purple Alewife and got the second one in minutes.

Good clear day, lake like glass.

Thanks again for your input information. I forgot to mention that I did install a can of Dry Gas along with the Stabil in both the boat fuel tank and my Chevy Tahoe sitting next to it in the garage. I think all is good.

Can't wait till Spring.

My fuel concerns began when my I brought my 1987 Sea Nymph, which I had just purchased a few weeks before, to the local Mercury Marine dealer for a full Spring Tune-up. I had to leave VT and return to AZ. But I stored it in my weather-tight garage and I added a bottle of Stabil as advised.  When I brought it to them they called me a few days later with bad news. Said the fuel tank was rusted and had a lot of water in it and it would have to be drained and then replaced. Seems Vermont has a Environmental Code for disposing of waste fuel and oil (I understand, OK) and I was charged $125.00 to empty the tank. They tried and couldn’t find a new replacement tank. I was stuck in AZ so I had no choice but let them find a cure.  When I returned I took the boat back and tried myself to locate a new stock replacement tank. I reached out to the guy in NY who had owned the boat years ago. He had tank problems and replaced it with a new 30 gallon plastic translucent fuel tank designed for Farm storage. He had also replaced all the full lines and fittings and installed the new tank front to back instead of side wards. Then the “Light Bulb” flashed...plastic doesn’t rust; Do this project yourself. The local NAPA auto parts store manager sold me the Stabil and told me that it was good for fuel storage because it contained a lot of Alcohol along with other chemicals to keep and water/condensation from freezing. Another Light Bulb went off. LOL   So I lost my first season messing with this and Vermont’s flooding.

A few of you guys mentioned Seafoam. I have used it many years ago on frozen/rusted/stuck motors that wouldn’t turn over even with a long wrench. Poured the Seafoam in the sparkplug holes and over the old rocker arms and let it set for half hour. Twice it worked, once on an old Model T Ford and another in a well driller’s rig stuck in the field. But once we freed the motor’s drive train and let it run full temp for a while, we then drained it all and installed new oil and filter. Never hear it as a fuel additive to remove water.  But I believe.

Having spent several decades in NHRA drag racing and USAC Indy Car we only used certified Menthol/Alcohol and Nitro Methane. Used products like Power Plus made by Red Line Oil and Benol made by Castrol Oil. Both blended with all types of Alcohol, Nitro and Gasoline fuels. We used a “Paste” on a wooden dowel to dip into the 55 gallon drums of fuel to check for water. But that was high performance automotive engines and not marine. As far as starting cold motors we use spray regular grade pump gas, not high test directly into our injector. Regular would light-off easier when priming our 4,000 HP blown alcohol Hemis. But High test gasoline does made more horse power than regular, ask any Corvette or Ferrari owner what they use.

Again thanks for all the advice; I’m the rookie with boats like this. I did replace the special marine fuel gauge the dealer couldn’t get with a new Stewart Warner Hot Rod gauge from my shelf.   12 volts is 12 volts.

Again Thanks for the advice. Reminds me of one of my racing experiences when in the pits while I was being towed to the starting line, my gas generator in my pits ran out. A crew member next to us did me a favor and went in my open trailer and filled the generator for me and re-started it. When I got back 15 minutes later, everyone was upset. Shut the stinky thing off! Seems the nice guy filled my generator with Alcohol/Methanol.

All my gas cans looked alike. Lesson learned. MARK every can with what is in it, even use different colors. Grandpa always said,  ”Don’t mix your alcohol (drinks)” LOL

First…THANK YOU ALL for the many expert opinions and advice! Remember as kids we were told by Dad, ”Don’t do that”. When we asked WHY? The answer was because I said so.

Now I know WHY or WHY NOT answers to fuel winter storage with correct intelligent descriptions.  What made me think about this subject was while I was painting my 3,500 sq. ft of roof with white rubberized paint getting ready to sell my Tucson, AZ house, I was Thinking which was more fun…painting a roof with white paint in the sun or shoveling the white snow off a roof in the cold. Either way my back hurts. LOL

Here is an itch I’ve been meaning to scratch… Regarding not using Ethanol gasoline in my Mercury 90 HP outboard, because it has alcohol in it. But rather find a gasoline that is Ethanol/alcohol free. I have been told by previous owner, Mercury owner’s manual and local marina operators…So I only use the preferred Ethanol free fuel (High Test), which costs $1.25 a gallon more. No problem. Here is the rub. I’m again told by the same sources that I should always install a bottle or two of Stabil to winterize the fuel tank for the winter...It’s alcohol.  SO…Is alcohol Good or Not Good? I used to run 100% alcohol in my Gasser drag race cars but never in the winter. I might have even taken a little alcohol myself while watching a football game on TV.  Now that it is slightly cooler outside...What does the jury say? Alcoholic Mercury or not?

Thank you...But I am a real father of four, married 47 years...I'm also a ordained Deacon in the Catholic faith. Can't wait till I get relocated in my house in Newport,Vermont, sometime in March. Last year was my last as Hospital Chaplain and collected a boat load of new car toys and models.

This year I got sick watching TV News showing a million illegals entering our USA, so I went Fishing...Instead for Real People.  For bait I Used a dozen StarBuck’s hot coffees, Dunkin Donuts, warm gloves, a few new heavy Chamois shirts and a Smile.

Next trip (different spot) I brought two 5ths. of Canadian Club and Jack Daniels (hidden in a brown paper bags) with large bottles of ginger ale and a stack of cups.

 Also shook each ones hand and gave each a $20.00. Even a poor lady had a broken shoe lace, so I tied a fisherman’s knot and got her going again.  Last trip I brought my old Scout master’s Pack Basket (from Vermont) filled with camping gear, and warm goodies, and also a $20.00., and gave that to two ladies out there drifting.   Everyone one was a United States citizen.

 So I caught my limit and ran out of bait but considered it all good fishing trips.

First I really enjoyed Ron's video of the eagle diving after his salmon.

Tuesday I took what might be my last AZ fishing trip with my son to Parker Canyon Lake (high elev. just over a mile high). Perfect day, no wind, air temp 75, sunny, lake looked like glass. Perfect! Only two other boats out and they were Bass fishing. In one of the back sections there is a beautiful section of straight sheer rock cliff going into the water. Depth showed 28 ft. Had a few nasty bees, one at a time, buzzing my face, so used my cap to swat them away. My son hooked a nice rainbow and it jumped a few times,and just as I was standing up to help him net it, again a bee buzzing me. Trout made a big splash at the boat edge, and my son yelled ,"Dad Look Out"! An Eagle swooped down from behind me and snatched my cap and flew off. I'm guessing he was diving after the trout splashing at the net and my cap got in the way.
We caught a few more and my son said look up there. The Eagle had landed in a old rotten tree top and was eating a fish. Guessing one of the bass fisherman wasn't too gentle when releasing the unwanted trout and it died and the Eagle recycled it at once.

I will miss this Federal property land, zero houses,camps, any signs of people. Deer, huge Blue Heron, ducks, geese, and antelope on the way in.
Final score was Eagle One and Speedy 3. And found my cap floating hundred yards away, all clawed up. LOL Good Fun, Good Fishing, Goodbye Arizona.

First. THANKS! That is a very kind offer. Being an old fisherman...LOL  I have to be mindful of putting too much line on my spool, causing a possible backlash.

Logistics: You live in New York state, and would have to fly out to Tucson,AZ, I could pick you up at airport and put you up for the night. Next day you start the trip 2,680 miles (the way a bird flies) I'd guess 3,000. Arrive at my VT house in Newport and drop off the rig. Then you have to get back to Hammondsport, NY. *Note: the is no airport in or near Newport, Vt. Burlington is the only one and is about 2 hours away from Newport. Then fly back to? A lot of steps. Am I missing something? Not impossible, but not a one-step effort. What do you think?

I'm pulling the trigger and selling my Tucson,AZ house and moving into my Newport,VT house (forever). I need to get my 16 ft. Aluma Craft outboard with 10hp gas and 24 volt electric motors moved from Tucson,AZ 85710 to Newport,VT 05855. House furniture movers can't help. 

Plan A: Have the Shipper with a flat bed open trailer move my entire rig together. 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD,Crew Cab with 8ft bed (22 ft total bumper to ball hitch) and the boat on trailer measures 19 ft ).   Drive it on like farm equipment and hitch it both down.

Any of you guys know of a cross-country mover that isn't afraid of boats? 

Plan B: is for me to tow it 5 days alone and then fly back to AZ to help with house move.

Never know unless you ask. LOL

Had a treable season.Rained 6 out of every days. Vermont had major flooding 3 times. Sad! I installed new wheels and tires painted the entire frame and fenders. Looks nice and the bent axle works ok for short trips. Will probably just buy a complete new trailer next season. I just returned to my AZ home on Friday. Son getting  married,  then holidays, then sell my AZ house and move into my Vermont lake house forever.  Thanks for the reply.

Thanks...Somehow my old posted question is still dragging on. I was asking how to get the fishy taste out of a dozen frozen trout. I understand all the tricks of bleeding them, cutting off the dark meat, ice them on board and a dozen different ways to pre-treat them including smoking. I ended up cutting them up in tiny pieces and fed them to a couple neighbors' cats. 

I like to go fishing for the Sport...not the taste.  So maybe try trolling for chickens instead.

Thanks again.  Took it out today and zero leaks. Was trying for Salmon but afraid they moved North into the Canadian portion of Lake Memphremagog.  But caught a few fat smallmouth bass...17-18 ",2 lbs. good jumpers. Was carefully watching my depths and kept my downrigger ball 15 above bottom.  As I wad moving out of the deepest part, I pushed the UP button and the darn thing Free-wheeled. Cannon Electric.  Spit out 155 ft while I was in 35ft water.  Shut the engine down and had to hand assist the wire backlash on the spool. Good fun. Used straight lines out the back rest of the day.  New toy,new things to learn. Clutch must be worn out or way out of adjustment.  Worked just fine a dozen times ,until it didn't.  Thanks again.
