But I don't see why the Alaskan salmon wouldent work. Because they are saltwater? Couldent u mix male Alaskan salmon sperm with our female.
I believe the "Alaskan strain" of kings run in the summer. A summer run of kings in Lake Ontario would be a disaster and could never happen.
When they selected stocking prospects the original biologists were careful to choose a "fall running" strain.

Depends on the size of the paddle but I'm intrigued.

normally a large paddle with meat 36 inches back
36"?? That's interesting. I've run flies that short but never meat but, if it works for you ........COOL.

Probably a very dumb question, but with this being our first year of really hitting it hard on lake O, I was wondering when the fishing dies in the lake. I realize that a good deal of the salmon that will run will do so by late Sept, but not sure what that means in the lake for fishing. When do things start to wrap up? Years ago we chartered out of the oak and in sept we found a smaller class of kings deeper while the matures were heading in. Will this last throughout Sept as well?
Thanks
This year the fishing died around June 15th. 😩
At least for some of the whiners.

Also DONT FORGET the One Man Fish Bowl to be held Tuesday. We will fish from 630-1130 and the entry is only $50.
Hopefully the lower entry fee will encourage a few more of you to try this Oak Orchard Tradition.

Playing around with this. Recent spread fishing 80-120fow for staging kings. Port side: high diver#3 out 170 with mag spoon, low diver#1.5 out 110 with F-fly, port outdown rigger down 60ft with F-fly. Chute Rigger with Mag spoon. Starboard side: high diver#3 out 180 with mag spoon, low diver !.5 with F-fly out 90, starboard rigger down 53ft with F-fly. Questions: could the outdown riggers with FF baits be to close the inside 1.5 divers with FF baits?? To much comotion to close together?? BTW all diver rods are 30lb 7 strand wire. Outdown riggerbooms are 5ft. Boat beam 8.5ft. Also running 10 color down chute. We got bites on all rods except port rigger,10 color and both starboard dipseys. We went 2 for 3 on mature kings this morning with many shakers. Our action was better then most we talked to this morning. Guess my general question is would we be better off thinning out our spread. Maybe run just 2 riggers,2 wire divers, and a 10 color down the chute??
I think you would have had just as many bites, or more, if you ran three riggers, two divers and a chute core or copper. Don't overthink it and more is NOT always better.
pHigh diver#3 out170 with mag spoon,

It's a light east wind and there is a ton of warm water. Don't look for it to flip but perhaps some cold water to move in.

Fish the fish not the temp. If you see them 150 down you can catch them there. Keep in mind you might not have to go that deep to catch them. Kings will travel tremendous distances for the right bait at the right speed.

Who made the rule you can't go below 100'? Fish where the fish are!

Not trying to start a debate (because it's not debatable) Google the cross breeding of Atlantic Salmon and brown trout and you'll find studies done in Europe , that proves it happens.
Funny just discussed this last weekend....And in fact at a presentation up at the Catskill Fly Fishing museum by DEC, they in fact have seen some cross breeding in their studies in the Salmon river. They've netted some hybrid fish. Not a common occurrence by any means but it has happened.
Very interesting that they can crossbreed. However, it is still highly doubtful that a brown and an Atlantic could crossbreed in a Lake O trib given the spawning characteristics of each species and the rivers/streams in which to do it. Europe maybe but not NY.
I've seen the pic of the fish and, as Rod said above, there is NOTHING "brown" about it. My guess is that a young DEC intern read the article about cross breeding in Europe and decided on her own that the fish was a hybrid. Without extensive genetic testing that conclusion is simply wrong. Just my opinion.

I don't believe a brown and an atlantic can mate to make a hybrid as their genetic makeup is too different. I could make a correlation about humans and sheep ......but you get the picture
What he said! I would hope the DEC wouldn't make such a ridiculous claim.

Thanks Paul. Good to hear. Have struggled a bit this year on kings and steelies and want to be sure to get the rods to go with the kids on board this weekend though it is hard for me to target lakers as I want to hear that drag scream!

Most of my solo fishing experience comes from fishing the Oak Orchard One Man Fish Bowl. I can tell you divers are tough to land fish on solo but it can be done. But given a choice I will take three riggers all run clean. Clip your net bag and pay attention to the weather.

Don't rule out Stingray or larger sized spoons in glow and green and, of course, wonder bread. Our largest lakers have come on spoons this year and at "salmon speed". Btw there are good numbers of kings and steelhead showing up with this westerly blow.

My Berkley Power Rigger rods are about 20 years old and they have served me very well but they're getting tired and I think it's time to retire them.
They're 8'6" 12-30 lb line and I used them for everything, salmon, trout and walleye.
I looked online at Shimano Talora 8'6" rods in M/H and they run about $79 each. I like the fact that they have a life time guarantee
Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance
I prefer the 8' Talora in med/light when fishing spoons and the medium heavy for paddles. There isn't a better rod and the 8' makes it easy to control a fish at the back of the boat.

Wire and copper are two different deployment devices. Wire is used in conjunction with dipsys and copper is used by itself.

The drag of the 350 feet of mono will completely negate the 3 oz weight.

In all honesty, call Bay Rat and talk to Kurt or Damien. They will give you the rundown on the hot walleye colors.
For Browns in Lake Ontario you can find all the popular BT colors in Bay Rat right on the website.
PM me if you have trouble.

Also think of Copper as a downrigger when it comes to leader length of mono. Isn't that right Paul! I suggested this tidbit to Paul quite a few years ago as he was ready to throw it all in the lake. It is not Leadcore!!!!! Typically 8 to 20 ft, I start short and go longer if it isn't producing.
And I still remember and appreciate that info you gave me in Sodus Brian. One of the best copper tips I ever got!

Thanks for the input. I seem to always go about 2.5-2.8 and pick up a few kings, but maybe I need to speed it up a bit. Thanks
Or slow down. Just sayin..... 😗
