  1. Caught 7 Friday and 4 nice ones Saturday all on harnesses. Smokes creek to seneca. Late morning bite for us. Best one was about 6 lb. Pulled lines about noon Saturday to beat ramp traffic.

  2. I guess ill chime in seeing as I'm one of those guys .First , when we luanch, me or my buddy are in boat ...dunk him in and we are out of there in less than a minute ,,he then picks me up on dock bt fish cleaning station..no need to wait for shuttle..When we return ,,its same thing ..i get dropped off on dock in front of fish cleaning station....However i wait off to side with trailer until guy in boat has his open dock..i back in ..he drives on and we are out in less than a min ....We always wait out turn ...It gets us in and out a LOT quicker ..I think if more people did this ,ones that could .It would be a lot quicker for everyone

you are not "one of those guys" if your boat driver is not cutting the line waiting for a dock

  3. Just be sure to cut out the lateral line and all is good.

Yea I trim em real good so I am just left with nice white meat. Even the little guys get the lateral cut out to get rid of that small set of bones

  4. I had larger boats kept at marinas for years. The last one had twin big block gas guzzlers and was a complete time vampire due to all the maintenance required. I experienced every frustration you have experienced with marinas and probably more over the course of 20 years of slip kept boats. It got to the point that while I could afford it, it simply was not worth it.

So in 2006 I ordered my 23 Steiger Miami that I have trailered ever since. Best move ever. I do ALL the upkeep on the boat including engine. All very easy if you are mechanical and get the shop manual. Big benefit is I now fish Erie and Ontario regularly, and may even take the boat to FL to use as my offshore boat.

Having a boat in a slip is a great but comes at a price (both financial and hassle) For me keeping my boat on a trailer in my barn makes me much happier, and I will rent slips at Olcott and Buffalo SBH for a few days to a week at a time when the fishing is hot.

  5. "MyTurn" did you used to run a Carolina Classic 28 out of Wilson, NY?

Yep that was/is me. Glad I sold that gas hog when I could.

LOL... I fish wilson every spring and remember motoring by wishing I had one - on my Bucket list.

Was it a diesel of gas? Either way I can imagine it sucked a ton of fuel being as heavy as it is.

It was gas, volvo 8.1 engines which are junk IMO, in 3 years blew 1 head gasket, siezed 1 bottom end, and had numerous sensor and wiring problems. The CC28 is a great boat in a head sea but basically sucks for anything else such as drifting or trolling parallel to the waves. the great lakes short period waves will get it rocking so bad you can't even stand up. I consider my 23 Steiger Miami an upgrade for the type of fishing I do. :D

Myturn, why use the braid? Why not straight mono? I figure the stretch would be a good thing.

    .

The braid (I use powerpro 20#) has a much smaller diameter thus much less buoyancy thus the lead gets down deeper. A advantage of lead core is that the baits rise and fall quite a bit on turns and speed changes which I think helps provoke a bite. This seems to be particularly effective on rough days, trolling with the waves as the boat surges and stops. The rising and falling is more pronounced with the braid.

  7. We run our 2,3, and 5 colors with 100' of braid between the lead and the mono backing. The in-line board goes at the braid-mono knot then the board gets sent way out wide. This is a very stealthy rig that has produced some of our biggest fish in mid day sun conditions in 50-60 FOW.

  8. Why aren't you guys running 3oz inline weights with colorado blades its by far the best bread and butter program in Ohio the guys out east in geneva-conny are smashing fish running 3oz 90-125 back at 1.5-2.0 pulling antifreeze, pink antifreeze and copper back #6 colorado's and taking 20-30 fish by 11am. Dipseys with double willows are also tops. All the charter boats fish 50 jets with double willows, single colorado. Alot of guys run reef runners with 3oz of weight.

Same fish different state you NY boys fish for walleye way different IMO you complicate it

I wouldn't even pull the leadcore, riggers, or torpedo's out.

To each his own I guess, we fish what works for us and for us it is lead core of various lengths, plus I would rather "fight" (if you can use that term with walleye) a fish on a straight lead core that with a 3 oz lead weight on the line. Also, lead core is more "stealthy" IMO.

  9. What an awesome summer it has been. y.

+1 here, this year was the best in memory for walleye out of SBH for us too. We have not fished for them since the end of June (been doing Ontario) but we had many awesome harvests including great catches mid day especially when it was a little rough. We mostly fish lead cores but also run 2 divers, never put our riggers in the water for walleye.

  10. Some of our best walleye fishing has been mid day on sunny calm days. If you think they stop biting at 8 or 9 you will miss some great fishing. We caught 6 in the 24" class in 36 fow in front of the windmills last Saturday. Sunny and calm. I would start looking in 30feet or so off the windmills and slowly work out. Be sure to run at least a couple lines high. I mean in the top 10 feet. Mayfly larve will be coming out and they will be eating that. Our best baits last Saturday were perch rapala deep divers, #5 and 6.

I never run downriggers for walleye unless fishing deeper than 60 fow. Run 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 colors, small dipsie divers, jet divers, and flat lines. I think the downdigger balls spook them.

  11. Looks like the lobbying done last year to change to a more realistic end time for the open division fell on deaf ears. (Rule is Open div competitors must be in line to weigh by 12 noon).

for me it is simply not worth it to take the time to participate if I have to be pulling lines at 11 AM. Guess I will just skip it again this year.

  12. ......

    In Weigh-in line Noon

Another question I have is the weigh in time? What's the reason the weigh in is so early, NOON. This does not leave a lot of time for fishing. One would have to pull rods and run back to port after only a few hours of fishing.

I think the weigh in should be 1:30.

The Pro time is "in weigh in line 3:30".

The Amature time is "in weigh in line 2:30".

Open division is "In Weigh-in line Noon".

I agree completely and brought this point up here on this board when the rules came out in the spring. This was the main reason I did not fish the Niagara event. Seems to me that if you only need to seperate the PROs from the AMs by 1 hour, then you should be able to do the same with the open guys.

Hopefully they will fix this for next year. The open division holds a lot of promise. Most of the entries of the open at Niagara were new teams, not AM refugees.
