1. Santa left me with some extra cash this winter (never enough) and I have a tough choice to make. When I bought my 1990 Penn Yan last December I vowed to spend all my fixerupper money on mechanical or safety items. Now with the boat ready for next spring I'm ready to add some fish getting stuff. When I bought the boat it came with an old Eagle GPS and an Eagle Fishfinder, very low end. However they both worked and I was able to get onto fish using the fishfinder and had a pretty good first season with the boat as it was. Never really used the GPS, I used a handheld for speed and getting back to hotspots and ports. What should I add, a new combo GPS/Fishfinder or a downspeed & temp? The speed and temp at the ball is info I've not been able to put to use, I rely on surface speed and downrigger cable angle and directional results to hone in on fish now. What would be more use at this stage of the game? I have about $500 - $700 to spend. Thanks for any thoughts.
2. I picked up my first Penn Yan last December. It's a 1991 215 Tempest (V 6 Merc) that had not been run for over 2 years. I rebuilt the carb, plugs, wires, rotor, two new batteries and replaced the impeller. Still needs some minor tweeks but man what a fishing machine. I put well over 75 care free hours on her this year over about a dozen trips on Lake O. These boats were built for fishing, you'll love the layout. Coulden't be happier with mine, hate to put her away till spring. Good Luck! [/img]
3. Clarke, I live just off the 81 exit in the morningside area.(far right in photo) I scuba dive with John Wickwire and John Hinchcliff both stay on the southend of Skaneateles Lake for the summer.(blue &pink in photo) The other guy is Doug Brown from Cortlandville, works at Cooper. He drives my boat and helps me guess where to fish. Just got the boat last December and have had a pretty good season this year. About 10 trips, Olcott and Oswego, only one skunk, a couple double didget mornings and new boat record kings the last three trips out. Greg Miller
4. Joined the crowd out of Oswego this AM. Not in the LOC. Started setting lines by 6:00am got our first hit befor the second rod was set. It was down 50 over 80 fow. John H got the fish almost close enough to see and it spit out the LBB on a white glow echip. O yea the fish also laughed at John H knowing he was a rookie. Followed the pack (no down speed & temp) north west for about an hour befor our second hit on a mag NBK down 45 over 160. John now skillfully landed his first Lake O king and got the skunk off the boat. Next the wire dipsy started to scream, we had a custom made spoon (Mr. Cream Jeans) out 200 on a 2.5 setting. By the time John W started gaining on the fish he had well over 500 ft of line out. After about a 20 min battle we netted the boat record to date 23 lb king. As we kept heading west we found some cohos up higher. Hooked one on the mag NBK down 35 over 180 but the fish spit the hook as it came completely out of the water about 40 ft behind the boat. O yea it was laughing at Doug who was just standing there with a limp rod in his hand Not three minutes later Doug got his chance again as he landed a nice 13 lb coho that hit a green/gold fly behind greeg glo SD. We then turned east and fished back with the wind to Oswego and had one final hit on that mag NBK again down 45 over 100 fow, we let the teenager swim to fight another day. Over all went 4 for 6, not bad with all the boat traffic and very little marks. Range was 2.2 to 3.0 on the GPS for speed. John H with his 1st Lake O King. John W taking a dump or trying to hold the boat record 23# King The crew.
5. Thanks, that means we grand slamed! Stickleback, gobies, alwives and smelt, all found in the fish we caught.
6. Caught this last June out of Oswego. Actually I was clearing lines and reeling in fast. Anyone know what this is?
7. It's a 1990 215 Tempest. Was looking for a fixerupper after trading in my 225 Sea Ray for a New 260 Sea Ray Sundancer. The wife would kill me if one drop of blood, slime or scale were found. I don't dare tell her I think I have lots more fun with that old Penn Yan. It,s a great fishing platform, easy on gas, nice to trailer and handles the 2-4 footers pretty well. 225 Sea Ray, traded in 260 Sea Ray, wifes boat! My favorit baot
8. Couldn't resist after reading all the reports on this forum, thanks to all that posted. Sites like these really help in planning a quick trip. We went NW to 100 fow and started marking fish. I set the deep side riggers and my nephew started setting the oposite side planner boards at about 6 AM. Before we got 4 rods in the water we got our first hit on the deep rigger, short lead down 50. It came on a white echip with little boy blue, nice teenage king. We abandoned the planner boards and set our sites on kings. The next 3 fish all came on the same set up working over same water. Decided to pull a spoon and add a chart. echip with blue/green fly. While sending it down took a small king. Things slowed so we set out our first wire dipsy. A white/glow spin doc with packer fly. Set on #3 out 200, this rig had two hits for the trip one coho landed and one big boy that peeled line and cut through 50lb leader after dancing and spinning on the surface . Worked out a little deeper and started changing out spoons as we didn't have a hit on one for the first 2 hours. Within 15 minutes of setting a mag boy girl (renamed HeShe) back 50 down 60 it fired and started screaming. After a 10 min battle and lots of yelling to clear lines my nephews Josh and Joe landed a 20# king, best on my boat to date. Things slowed after that and we picked away at a couple more but the bite ended for us at around 10 AM. We went 10 for 12 on the morning and were cleaning fish by 11:30. The Crew 20# and 17# Best Yet
9. First time on the west end of the lake for the Play Penn. Based on local gossip decided to try Wilson for our first morning, 5/11. Went NW on flat water to 200 fow. Set up planner boards and riggers. Went 4 for 6, cohos on top with one nice king (17#)down 70 over 230. Took a black/purple/white stinger with big red eye, not sure of the name. Marked very few fish all morning but saved the day with the king at about 11:30 am. Saturday went out of Olcott 6:00 am in 2/4 footers, headed north lots of marks in 50 fow couldn't stand it any longer and set up a west troll in 80 fow, just set the drag on the first rigger down 50 out 20 and the white Spin Doctor with Packer fly went off. Nice 14# king. Went 5 for 7 on the morning, 2 kings 3 coho. Worked deeper to 250 fow only coho on top worked back shallow to 100 fow in front of Olcott and doubled on a king and a coho. Coho came on top stick bait, king came on a "Purple Richards Puke" named by me after the I borrowed it from my friend who custom made it. See photo. It was down 50 out 60. Not bad way to end the trip, off the water by noon.
10. Late start, 7am, lost one brown shallow then worked deeper and started the catching with a double. Went 6 for 7 on the morning. Rainbows and Cohos off the boards and all on J11 raps in perch with orange stripe on belly. One other rig took a 6# king, slide diver, back 100 out 60 on a Puerto Rican. Nothing on the riggers, tried top to bottom working between 60 - 80 FOW, 1 - 2 miles east. Ready for Olcott next week, hope the fish are [/img]
11. First Lake O trip for the new to me Penn Yan 215 Tempest. Set lines heading out of the bay from Wrights Landing. Had one side of my planners set as we were passing the lighthouse and took our first Lake O fish, 3lb rainbow. Went 11 for 11 on the morning east of break walls in 5 to 20 fow. All browns avg 4 lbs with 2 rainbows and 2 small kings. Best fish was 6 #er on green echip flasher/green fly as we were pulling in lines for the day off the 20 ft rigger back 50ft. Fish hit fly 30 feet from the boat almost at the surface. Best lure was J9 perch rap with orange belly, took 5 of our fish.
