  1. Way to go Mike. We did the same thing after Seneca beat us down a bit these last few trips. Nice to get some action for a change! When we were out of South end on Cayuga we found many marks down between 80 and 120ft in 200-250 feet of water but could get any to hit so we switched over to sticks and went shallow and had good luck on the salmon. That brown is beautiful

  2. Thanks. For those that are looking for simple, I can tell you that when you start adding on the additional features, it can get confusing to navigate the different screens and get it set up to your particular type of fishing. With practice it gets easier, but it's not just "plug and play" for all conditions...

  3. I have the hummingbird 899 with both down and side scan. The problem with using it for trolling is that there is a lot of water between you and the bottom, so you can't see a fish on it unless you're in shallow water or really zoom it in. I have the unit, but only use the old standard sonar function when trolling. If I'm fishing 30 ft anchored for perch, then I'll turn on a split screen so I can see sonar and scan images. If you're looking to just use for deep water trolling, stock with just a good sonar unit. If you have the cash and want to fish shallow and see high detail (like a picture of what's below the boat) then go ahead and spend the extra dough to get the down and or side scans. I'd recommend getting out with a couple guys that have these units so you can check em out before you fork out close to a grand, and don't just get wooed by the screen shots or simulated images on the web or in the store - you wanna see how they actually function in real life and fit to your type of fishing.

  4. Fished from village marina in Watkins at first light to 10am. Trolled up West side then cut over to peach orchard and back down to Watkins along East side. Boards, 2 lead core, 3 riggers with spoons and cheaters. 2.2 to 3mph from 20 fow to 130 fow. Hooked one small salmon that feel off 50 ft from boat. Heartbreak lake strikes again!

  5. Fished a few hours out of severne late morning today. Marked very few south of launch. Talked to guys that headed north of launch and marked a lot of fish. Neither of us had a rod fire tho.... don't know what's going on with Seneca this year, but it's been a common theme with trout and perch...

  6. Does anyone know the name of planers that attach directly to the downrigger cable right above the weights to pull the side rigger lines out away from the boat? I was on a charter and the captain used them but I forgot the name he called them. They are ten to twelve inches long and made of thin metal and clip right to the downriger cable. I know lots of guys bend the fins out on their weights to archieve the same effect but I think these may add another attractor component to the spread... thanks!
