  1. I didn't know they quit making it, I think I'll change now seems how I lost the probe. Anyone with suggestions, I'm leaning towards a subtroll for 2 reasons, 1 their made locally, and 2 they have the cheapest probe to replace
  2. That's how I had mine attached was with the cannon terminator and a long tag for signal, but it didn't matter when the cable broke above it all and it all went why do you say it has gone the way of the dinosaur, do you use a different model or have a different way of knowing your down speed?
  3. This is a pic a fellow member sent me to show me, it worked great, but can't save you if your cable breaks up above it, pretty sure nothing can! Not sure how the fish hawk set up is but if it is similar to the cannon this is easy and works great
  4. I made mine so I could take the probe off, and I never trailered or ran with it hooked up, not even the balls. I hook them up when ready to go down only, also I don't reel the downriggersup tight, but I do run them the whole time I am fishing and I guess I won't anymore, get my info and get it back to safety. Thanks for the tips, I still would like to hear if anyone else has had any problems with the roemers causing a weak spot. Gill t I made an aluminum bracket for mine, and used connectors for the wire so could be easily removed, let me see if I have a pic
  5. I bought a cannon s+t unit, lined up with coated cable and loved the unit, that is until this weekend when it found a new home at the bottom of the lake! This was only my 4th trip with the unit and it's already costing me a fortune. I am thinking of going to a sub troll just for the cheaper probe replacement. But before I spend more money I would like to feel confident in not losing that to. The cable itself broke losing everything. It broke right at my release which was a roemer, it broke right where it clips on with the metal folding clip on top. Are these releases that tough on dr cables? Is there a heavier lb test cable I can buy? The cable I have is brand new and has never hit bottom or been in a tangle and I don't see a single nick in it. But like I said it broke right on the release which was also brand new and really burns my a## that a $12 product cost me $350. What types of setups do you guys use with the coated cable so not to lose probes. Oh and I was only running a 10# ball. I had built a custom bracket for the probe that was seen on here, used a lighter cable from there to the ball for a break away cable and thought it was fool proof, but none of that matters when the cable breaks 2' above it and the whole lot goes down. I liked the roemer release until it broke my cable. I liked that I could crank the rod tip down yet still have a pretty light setting for for the fish to release, and I liked having it above the probe and not having to worry about it getting tangled in it. Wish I could get heavier downrigger coated cable, about 10,000 lb test. Any tips or thoughts on what is going wrong would be appreciated.
  6. Needless to say I added to the collection on the bottom of lake O So I am looking for a new probe
  7. Never even thought of that Eric, And thank you for helping out a new guy. I see your port is oak orchard that is where I will be keeping my boat also so hopefully I will see you out there some time!
  8. Another question for ya, how about the spring and wire that mount on the downrigger, after you put that on it seems like the downrigger can't be removed very easily, I was hoping to be able to take mine on and off as I used them(and for security purposes) has anyone come up with a way to disconnect the spring?
  9. Yea I like that set up, think I'll work on that today. How about running the cables to the monitor, I was going to put the monitor on the dash next to the fishfinder but will have to run the wires pretty close to my other wiring, has anyone had problems with interferance from other electronics?
  10. I just bought a speed n temp gauge from a fellow LOU member and am worried about losing the probe. I am new to this whole style of fishing so any help will be appreciated. I am mounting the probe on and older mag 10 with coated cable. I guess what I would like to know is if anyone has come up with a rig to keep from losing the probe, the set up that they have doesn't seem that great. I know I seen a set up on here once but I couldn't find it again. Also any tips as far as the downriggers, probe, display, wiring, or any tips you might have I'll appreciate. I have a boat, 2 downriggers, speed n temp monitor, poles, rod holders, and some lures and dipseys, and to be honest no idea what I am doing. I am planning on mounting all this stuff on the boat this weekend so maybe you can save me some headaches. Thanks for reading and for any advice you might give
  11. Thank You Pat I just got off the phone with sp outfitter and they were very helpful. Unfortunately there is no rebuilding to the motors on the old mag 10's as they are a sealed unit. The only thing to do is put a new motor in it which is cheaper than a new one. I also asked him about a big jon downrigger that I have and told me that they very rarely ever have to fix one, they just don't break down. I am debating getting another big jon and getting rid of the mag 10's. This big jon that I have I actually got from a guy who was going to sell it for scrap, I got it along with 3 manuals for $10! Anyway I decided to try it out and hooked it up to a battery and was astounded at how fast and strong it was compared to the mag 10's. Anyone else run Big Jons, What are your thoughts? But if you really want to update your mag 10 you can get a new motor put in for around $175-200. He also said they can service them by taking them apart regreasing, putting in new bearings, and cleaning them up, but it won't help the motor. I think he said that was around $75. Oh and also would like to add that they were very helpful and will definitely get my business once I decide what I am going to do.
  12. Thanks for your reply, I'll give them a call tommorrow
  13. Just wondering if anyone has ever had the motors rebuilt in their downrigger. I have older mag 10's which work fine but I think they have lost a little power and speed over the years. Has anyone ever had the brushes replaced or anything and if so did it help, where did you take it to have it done, how much?
  14. I have a bimini top that is tall so you can stand up under it. It has removable side windows, zipper in front for walk through. It is in excellent condition, no rips or holes or anything. Fabric is not all faded and dried out. It goes up and down in seconds $125 also has cover for front window and storage cover for when not in use I am located in Silver Springs, N.Y. This came off a boat with 6' beam
