  1. I definitely prefer the small closed bow over an open bow too. I don't really have any need for room in front of the dash and want more room behind it. What I'd really really like is like a 20+' deep v version of my 61 alumacraft queen merrie. It's 18' but kind of a semi v hull. Probably wouldn't handle big water well. That Johnson was on the first year I had it out. The green motor is a 59 mercury mark 78a. 70hp dockbuster. Currently down for an exhaust plate/gasket/drilling out some bolts. I'd really like to put a bearcat 55 on there. That's my dream motor for that boat.
  2. I do like the holiday but wish the floor was lower in it. I like the sides higher. I'm about 6'5" and clumsy. Looks like the perfect size to trip over. What's that package weigh with the trailer? I'm also getting another truck soon but I like rangers and Tacomas so a little limited on towing.
  3. I guess I wouldn't mind an i/o as long as it's got plenty of room and meets most of my other criteria.
  4. I'm looking to get another boat to use in the finger lakes and occasionally lake Ontario. What I'm looking for is something maybe 20-24', aluminum, deep v, preferably outboard, very open. Like a big center console or maybe a closed bow. Preferably light weight or as light as possible. I don't like cabin boats, don't need live wells, extra storage.. I'm not posting like a want ad but looking on ideas of models to look for. Preferably older I plan on getting something and re doing the floor and transom. Pictures would be great if anyone has something they think I'd like. I'm really into old curvy aluminum and I have a very good 115 merc that needs a home
  5. I tried again this morning. Thermocline is around 35 feet. Marked several fish at mid 20s in 50 fow. No hits from any of them but I did get 2 18" Lakers that were hanging around 40. I ran 2 small divers out each side on #3 and one magnum diver straight back. Which at low speeds that magnum works like a downrigger. I had 40' of line out and it was showing up on my fish finder as 35'. Caught both the lakers on a fire tiger original floater rapala.
  6. Not a big lake question but for smaller lakes. I catch a decent amount of lake trout in lakes that also contain browns and sometimes brookies. I've caught brookies trolling but never browns. I hammer them in streams throughout the year and catch them from shore in the spring but never got one trolling. Never got one through the ice either. How should I be targeting them? How deep do they like to hang out? Is the technique the same? I usually run about 1.2-1.75 mph and catch most of my lakers 40-60' down in 40-90 fow. Just got my 8th brown over 20" from streams for the year and would like to get one in the boat.
  7. My friend has the bigger boat that will be going in Ontario. That one will have wire. He bought it all set up already. This is a 14' dedicated lake trout boat. Mostly otsego and adirondack lakes
  8. They don't have fleas in the lakes this boat will be in.
  9. I won't be fishing salmon. This is actually for smaller lakes and 15-36" Lakers
  10. So I could probably just use a medium heavy rigger rod instead of a medium dipsy rod? Or is it even stiffer than that
  11. I have my best luck on a pink walleye crawler harness... Just works I guess.
  12. I know how the divers work. Was just wondering what the difference was between a dedicated dipsy rod and other rods. Dipsy rods are only available online to me. Regular downrigger and trolling rods I can get. I plan on having 2 dipsy rods, one flat line, and one downrigger rod to potentially use. My flat line rod is a st Croix kokanee with a shimano Calcutta 50 with 8lb line.
  13. What's the difference between dipsy rods and downrigger/trolling rods?
  14. Opened up one of my penn reels and it has a cracked casing on it asking with a bent power handle. No box damage though. Returned both of them to bass pro because I didn't like them. Was going to order from Amazon but realized last minute there was no line counter. The search continues.
  15. I don't like to run planer boards much. Some of the lakes are pretty small and boats can get very close.
  16. I ended up going to 4 Dicks, 2 runnings, and the Utica bass pro ended up with 2 pen warfare line counter reels, and 2 eagle claw starfire medium fiberglass rods. There wasn't much else to choose from out my way. I've already got a huge assortment of dipsy divers so I'll stick with all of those for now.
  17. Lead core may work in the spring and fall but they tend to go deeper than I can reach with that. How much deeper does a dipsy run with wire over braid? Honestly most fish caught will probably be 26 and under. My average this year for Lakers is about 22.5" average of about 60 fish with biggest being 28 this year. I'd be doing better but this was all out of my canoe on one line with a heavy trolling rod. A couple of times I reeled in to change lures and found about a 14" fish on my line. Rod has no bend for these little guys. When I start getting to otsego lake more my average will go up. My lifetime average Laker from there is 28" biggest being 33
  18. Mine isn't that deep so it won't be going in the big lake. Maybe someday even my 1961 queen merrie 18' is done that will go out. This 14' is a 73 sea king. Pretty flimsy but the price was right and it fills a hole I needed filled. Worst weather I'll ever see is 1' in otsego lake. Was just at my local running and no trolling stuff. Utica bass pro is 25 miles away though so maybe I'll head there almost done with seats and transom work. Hopefully I'll be dragging next weekend
  19. I've got a 14' boat that I'm going to use for 90% lake trout and 10% other trout in smaller lakes. I made a removable downrigger/ trolling board that slips into my oar locks and tightens down with wing nuts. This will be mostly smaller lake fishing. I'm running one downrigger which I have a couple ultra light and medium rods for. Now I want to get 2 rods for running dipsy divers off the sides. May also run one straight back but usually only the 3 do you guys have any recommendations for rods and reels for these setups? I do have one heavier trolling rod but it's probably more of a salmon weight rod. This boat will never see salmon. Would a medium weight be what I'm looking for? Going to run the dipsy, a flasher, snubber, then usually spoons or swim baits. Also troll small rapalas sometimes
  20. How far out is it until 40-60 feet? I did go across Champlain and back one day. I believe where we did it the trip was 5 miles each way.
  21. Not looking to go out in a boat. Just the canoe. I've fished some rough stuff and will probably bring an outrigger just in case. Can't be too different than the people that go out canoeing and kayakingin the ocean.
  22. I do tons of canoe fishing in other lakes as well as some rapids and plenty of river salmon fishing. However I've been getting the urge lately to salmon fish from my little 12' old town guide canoe. I'm quite skilled at getting into a swamped canoe and always wear a life jacket. I just need time technique/gear info as I've never done lake salmon before. How far out would I have to go?
  23. http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/p ... 006&r=view i use these on my boats. theyre normally 25 bucks but they often go on sale for 15. theyre good sturdy mounts that can be mounted in many angles. not trying to get anybody to shop at gander mountain but if you find something similar theyre great. i even use one with a broken heavy trolling rod as a downrigger with a 12lb weight so you know they will hold up.
