Material cost me 200Do it right is about $2000, 20 percent of the cost of my boat, for rudders, also it’s pretty fun building stuff.
1/4" aluminum
5052
Build time was 4 hours
I pulled the rudders
Cut the sheet
Had to use a brake to bend the front of each plate
Clamp and weld
Drill and tap
I added a magnesium anode this season
No corrosion was noticed after 2 seasons
Steering torque increased a little.
I can troll in 3 to 4 footers and my AP barely has to make adjustments whereas before the boat was useless in 2 foot seas
And to bob
If you consider this cutting corners I bet there isnt a boat out there that you would consider buying
I've seen a lot worse than ppl using dissimilar metals for a rudder extension

Dont listen to other pplHas anyone tried to make their own rubber extensions by simply bolting a bigger price of metal to their current rudders?
You can bolt on an extension without harm
I built these for my 11m
I also have friends who bolted on heavy aluminum flatbar to the rudder without any harm

A good friend of mine, he's one of the best fabricators around, any extensions he will do for $700

Please send me his contact.
My rudders are out now while I work on the boat.
Wouldn't mind doing it now.

I really don't think most ppl speak of wave heights honestly.
Or they just guess which in most cases they are way off.
When I hear guys say 4 or 5 footers most likely its a true 2 footer.
4 footers are huge when it comes to fishing on lake o.
In my previous 31 tiara we would fish up to 4 footers max even in a following sea.
You can't control your speed. Your spread is crabbing all over the place.
Rods are false releasing
And then when you want to run in you take a beating regardless of boat make or models.
I wouldn't fish 4 plus footers in a 31' or a 24'
The only difference between the two boats is one is larger and can be more comfortable to fish on and sleep on with company.
After owning several boats and looking at dozens I wouldn't buy any other brand than S2 yatchs
Tiara, pursuit all the way.
Well built and affordable boats

Depends on your highway laws and tow vehicle
Tow distance
If tow bigger if I wasn't worried I would get stopped every time.

If you can afford 2 boats go for it.
I've had several boats at a time and still do.
It hurts the wallet but allows be to fish anything and duck hunt anywhere.
.as for the LO boat I would look for a beat up 27 tiara on a trailer and invest some elbow grease.
I found mine for 5500 without the trailer.
Bought a brand new trailer for 6k
The boat was solid other than no electronics and some punky cat walks.
Motors and trannies were good.
I already spent 30k in extras but I'm stupid like that.

Just be careful that when you release the buckle your fingers are clear
I almost lost a finger nail last year when I went to open mine

there both great units. i prefered the older lowrances over the new ones. in the end i went with HB
-
go tho the simrad site and download the manual
-
it shouldnt turn on unless it has a signal because there is no compass telling it if its on course or not.
which gps are you running
if its HB then i will grab my manual and see which wire is input/output
-
i dont think you need a compass for a autopilot unless you want it to hold a specific heading. if you hook it up to your gps the gps will drive your pilot. when i use my gps to hold a heading it tracks much smoother. the compass my unit came with doesnt do as well as my gps
Rudder extensions
in This Old Boat
Posted
Guys
The best way to extend rudders would be to have them built out with bronze and brazed in with SiB
Or built entirely out of SS
I agree with that.
But generally time and money determine which avenue you take.
It's not cobbled to bolt on an extension
It's just not the best approach.
