  1. Anyone have any recommendations on a good mechanic( shop or person) who won't be looking at me with eyes gleaming of his next months mortgage being met... .. I have a Mariner 3.5 outboard which needs some carburetor work done and shaft examination. Have not used it in a few years but did use it as a kicker on my old 19ft Starcraft, I want to use it on my 18' Starcraft now.. anywhere from Buffalo southtowns to Rochester I will travel for a good mechanic and not a rip off artist! ...Thanks
  2. Oh yeah aluminum would have been nice, ( and a bit lighter, this whole setup added 11# to boat)) but $$ constraints led me to use what materials I had on hand, I have since pictures were taken added small side holders for miscellaneous gear...pliers/knives, etc and two detachable cup/can holders, boys and their toys!
  3. Great, has any if these "green" energy folks researched what will happen when they start drilling and digging and loosening up all the sediment on the lake bottom, not so many years ago when everything chemical and waste harmful that mankind had to offer was dumped in the lake, it has settled and been buried over by years of silt and other debris, a somewhat stable situation has occurred, what happens now as all these pollutants start making their way off the bottoms back into the ecosystem? Lake Erie has many dead zones as it is and is a dying lake , studies have shown great areas that are oxygen deplete, organism depleted, fish depleted ( Know this by info my son has taken in his quest for a biological/ecologist studies degree) for the cost and future destruction these windmills will have and create I do not see their worthwhile. ( yes there will be small pockets where the panfish and bass will linger and make sport for fishermen but the long term effects are not good) I'd rather see small NUKE plants as in Europe pop up to create clean power ( not the type we have now but a closed nuclear system), and remember you may not fish in Erie but what Erie sows Ontario reaps!
  4. Anyone fishing off the pier in Lewiston down from the SILO hamburger joint, due to knee mobility issues this is easiest for me to get down to with the stairs there , any particular setups for this area, any info would be appreciated, never fished there before and my boat is out for the season, doing shore fishing now...Thanks in advance
  5. seen this type of cr** too much, this is why in addition to fishing gear, I carry a pistol, and am not afraid to use it to defend myself or others, ( 32 years Law Enforcement background), I remember years ago going down to Burt to fish ( OK actually snag, when it was legal) it was fun, maybe a dozen guys total, missed many years going there due to job but on a return years later saw hundreds of "fishermen", more fight than I care to list, and that was the start of me carrying while fishing. I do hope arrests are made and the thugs are put away for a reasonable sentence. Good luck to Bill, though I do not know him, Thank you for your service ( from an old vet also), and good fishing and many more years of it for sure!
  6. made this quick release set-up for rod holders for lightweight fishing ( walleye- smaller trout..NOT the BIG BOYS in Ontario but it will work) , using Ram and Cabelas rod holders with quick release locks( important things if you ever lost a pole) , the setup cost only $22 for parts, used an old seat pedestal for base, 2x4's ( treated ) and stainless bolts and wing nuts. Saw similar setups for sale for upwards of $200 +. First time using it had no problems trolling using dipsys with wire and other setups. Just thought we'd share for those guys who can't afford all the good bells and whistles yet
  7. Never been to Ontario, I just don't feel comfortable in my 18' Starcraft Starfish 90HP, it has a deep V, 98 inch beam, but only carries 20" out of water, kept to Erie most times and now will only hit it on VERY calm days , if you've been on Erie you know how fast the water can change, it took us 3 hours to get in from roundhouse to Small Boat HArbor via Hamburg beach, due to the 5-7 rollers and waves that just popped up from the NW, even though Weather radio said winds were calm! I would suggest a charter first in Ontario, ask the Captain how the lake reacts in different winds, and besides you'll find nice fishing spots!, one other thing I found out listen to Canadian weather forecasts or their marine forecast web site, they give a more accurate forecast of Lake conditions and winds than the American side does. So now I'll just charter on Ontario until I win the Lottery and get my 32' Boston Whaler! Happy Fishing
  8. did our first run on Canandaigua yesterday, had mega problems with dipsy's kept getting all twisted up, horribly so, and we followed every direction as stated above, I removed snubber which alleviated some problems but the twisting kept occurring, seems to me too many swivels between dipsy, snubbers, flahers etc........ any suggestions? oh by the way marked fish only at 50' over 200 no hits no fish, until we finally headed in and said let's jig for bass and got some HUGE perch only, at least we can say we caught something..one other note, the fisherman out were courteous and considerable boaters but the recreational boaters, well...........if I had .50cal mount on boat it would have been well used yesterday!
  9. Thanks for the info Bob..........We appreciate it...Good Fishing vibes to you
  10. As new to going to the Finger lakes, I hear mentions of flasher flies, cowbells and some other assorted descriptions can use a little help in the best way to rig things up, as in previous post, we are new to lakes( going to try canandaigua first a bit closer -only 100mi away) we don't have downriggers, going to use dipsy and maybe divers probably with keel or clip on weights off lead core and copper wire, just wondering what setup for terminal tackle at end of leader , how far up from end for the flashers, any help would be appreciated, also , maybe a couple of good tackle stores in the area, probably launching at woodville when going as this is the closets launch as we are coming in, thanks guys, Great Forum by the way just sign us....frustrated Lake Erie boaters
  11. Hi new to the finger lakes after giving up on Erie, now we don't have downriggers, or super fancy gear, but did utilize, dipsy divers and Jet-divers in Erie, with lead core or copper wire, will they work in Canandaigua?, any particular setups, heck can we go back to the old lake way of a 2-4 oz. weight with leaders, any help or advice would be much appreciated for a couple guys who just want to catch fish and stay out of folks way, Thanks in advance guys...... Bill and Pete
