    I use 8.6 JR pump handle medium action rods,my Friends use regular down rigger rods with the 19 strand.

    Ive been running wire on a saltis down rig reel for 3yrs now and haven't had any issues,we will run a 60 ft flor lead off of the wire and attach the down rigger release to the flor,
