  1. I run braid for the main line with a mono leader. I have used the Offshore boards off a boat and they worked great but would release off the line completely at times with a big fish and would have to go back to track it down after bringing in the fish. Keep in mind I am fishing out of a kayak and a 1 man operation so the simpler the rig the better. Thanks

OR-16 clip. They won't come off ever again unless of user error. Make sure the line goes under the tit in the middle of the clip
  2. If you fished the lake more than a few weekends out of ANY port on Lake Ontario the last 2 seasons it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the salmon numbers were down. DRASTICALLY. If you want to know the status of the lake ask the guys who are out there EVERYDAY from April-oct from sunup to sundown. Guys like Captain Vinny should be used as a tool. It's hard to argue with someone who spends more time on the lake in a month than most do all season

  3. I will see you there Brian, and please guys/gals spread the word, let's fill the hatchery!!! They need to see we do care about our fishery and we want to be involved!!!

  4. Even if you have running lights on and you strike another boat or a shore fisherman, you have to answer for the incident. That is why spotlights help you know what is going on. After seeing other boats without lights you are guilty since you know the existing situation. Law enforcement is lacking at the night fishing zones so you have to be prepared. It is illegal to shine a spotlight on a boat at night blinding the operator. There is no safe way to operate at these harbors except to be able to stop in half the visibility distance.

I hate to rely on electronics but RADAR is a simple solution.
  5. Chas...I do all of my walleye fishing in L Erie & go to Ontarion for the steelies & salmon. The ones down here have all been on the skinny side with hardly any fat at all in them. Caught a couple of 27 inchers that barely made 6-3/4 lbs. Last year, lots of fat.

I just thought it was flukey that they were skinny but I listened to a Lake Erie DEC biologist (works out of the Dunkirk unit) last month giving a presentation on the walleye telemetry study going on & he got on the topic that the average weight of the walleyes that they netted for sampling is about one to two lb. less than previous years, and they don't know why, yet.

I talked to some people who think it's the invasive spiny fleas. The spines stick inside the difestive systems of smaller fish & those in turn get eaten by the larger fish. That's just people talking so I'll wait for a scientific study on that one.

Oh, btw, those are some nice looking 'eyes you're holding. A big Congrats!!

They have been in Lake Erie since the mid to late 80s so I don't think that has anything to do with the weights of the walleye being down. I believe it has more to do with the HARSH winters we have received the last 2 years more than anything else
  6. Although it's only a prediction, but by the sounds of it, we're going to have a mild winter with the help of el nino. Anyone think this may extend the feeding habits producing bigger fish and a better fishery similar to a few years ago?

They cant seem to predict today and tomorrow's weather right most of the time so I'm not holding my breath to ANY forecast for the winter
  7. For some it's hard. I gets calls and pics daily from friends at the east end and they are putting the smack down of the kings and it keeps getting better and better. I will find out tomorrow gonna be doing a 3 day stint out in front here. I know there are fish but where are the majors.

I will prolly catch some heat for this but a wise man once told me the Kings live on the western end of Ontario and go and die on the eastern end but besides spring it hasn't been the case this yr. Tough bite on the western end with some fairly good days on the eastern end
  8. Strip 200' of line off and tie in 200' of 50 lb test and you won't have any problems on your riggers. The thick diameter won't allow them to cling on. They cut easy enough on the wire dipsy's that you should be able to get them off in a few seconds. Most of the time they come off when going through the twilly tip if not, smack the line on the water a few times

  10. This is what happens when you don't buy derby ticket. This morning one of clients hooked this fish. On my scale showed 29.5lbs. Unfortunately my three clients didn't buy the tickets. Good 20 minutes fight and lot of excitement. Fish took 300 copper. First time fishing Lake Ontario boys from Philadelphia told me they will buy the tickets next time they fish with me. Live and learn. ImageUploadedByLake Ontario United1437432074.952590.jpg

GREAT fish. We hear the same story a few times a year. I fish on a few different boats and I MAKE everyone on the boat at least get the 1 day ticket or they don't fish with me
  11. A big stinky skunk. Took out Pikefreak tonight. 100fow out to 240 and back to 130. Caught buckets of fleas on every line, but no fish. Not even a release. First time running a wire dipsy and it had seemingly as many fleas on it as the braid dipsy lines. Temps all over the place. Bait scattered. Fleas so bad I'm reconsidering what to fish for on the weekend.

Its part of the GAME. Just check lines more often. Gives you a reason to change lures/FF more frequently
  12. That doesn't mean they are the best...I see a lot of "professional bass fisherman" running Nitro bass boats, and they aren't anywhere near the best boat out there.

I'm not trying to bash any one brand, I just hate seeing someone spend money that they may not need too.

For the price of the otters I could have 2 complete copper setups.

He ALREADY has otters so he would be spending WAY less putting another set of keels on. The reason most of the charter fleet uses them are because the Amish boards WILL flip in some rough conditions. The otters WON'T
