  1. I fished Boca Grande for the first time May 15 this year. There were plenty of fish, big fish. I caught 2 with the first one being a one hour battle covering over a mile of water. 7 feet long and 160 lbs, not even a 'big' one. Powerful and cool to watch gulp air and then take off on another run again and again and again and again... Second fish was a little 60 lb. Native Water Fishing Charters treated me well. Look em up! 600 for 6 hrs was a bargain to me. I want to go back every year in May-June. I would suggest not partying too hard the night before. Fighting a good Tarpon is a lot of work!post-155213-14395203669006_thumb.jpgpost-155213-14395203843393_thumb.jpg

  2. 6am-Noon 2 fish. Brown down 105 in 160 at about 8am and Laker in 30' as I was bring my down rigger up about 11:30. Decent screens in first couple hours with fish consistently at about 105' down. Last couple hours there wasn't much on the screen. Fleas were not bad. The guy watching the access said a few boats had come in with nothing "and a couple of them really looked like they knew what they were doing"

  3. What do you think they are? I'm new to fishing Lake Ontario and seriously don't know what they most likely are. I guess I'll have to catch some in the morning to see what they are. Thinking heavy jig with big plastic swim bait since I primarily run dippy divers and not quite to 85'. Trolled 220' back to 60' this evening and had mostly blank screen. A few at a break 170-200, but that's it. Where the salmon at? Just got the boat fixed and tomorrow looks like great weather for fishing.

  4. Thank you everyone for the kind words and congratulations!  This site is awesome.  I moved from Minnesota nearly 2 years ago and have been learning how to fish for Trout and Salmon in the area waters since I didn't have experience pursuing these type of fish in MN.  Tributaries, the shore of Lade O and waders have been good to me for the last year and a half.  Knew I would need to get out on the lake and bought a 16.5' Lund this year.  I've trolled a little about 10 times so far and seem to be catching bigger and bigger fish, but know there are plenty bigger out there.  My three kids (16, 12 & 9) have grown up around fishing either coming with me in the boats, off docks at grandparents in MN or seeing me come home with pictures of trophies released to be caught again when the fish are even bigger.  This was not my daughter's first Lake Trout, but it is the biggest anyone has caught from our boat so far...

This site has been great to read and learn from.  Many of you understand the passion that I have for fishing and appreciate the effect fishing can have on impressionable children.  I even went fishing last year with someone that PM'd me with an open spot in their boat.  I learned a little and it turned out that he was a fisherman who was reigniting a lure company, Great Lakes Lure Company.  Jason is great guy that is making and selling lures that fish want to eat.  My favorite is the Oakie Doakie which I caught my first Lake Trout on from his boat.  He's not paying me to say this :)

I look forward to reading plenty more on this site and sharing my and my children's experiences.  Tight lines!

  5. Took advantage of the nice weather yesterday and took my 9 yr old daughter out for a quick trip on Lady O after work. Did not find many fish at all on the graph anywhere from 50' to 110'. Caught one though and that was all we needed to make it awesome. 34" 16lb 20" girth Lake Trout = One happy girl! According to the story she wrote about it "It was a fighter and a flopper". Just bought this little Lund boat and already need to get a bigger one...

When we were leaving the house I told my wife that my daughter was going to catch the biggest fish of her life. 45 minutes of fishing later I was right.

  6. I appreciate the responses thus far.  Some good info.  Last winter I focused on teaching myself how to catch trout from open water I could find.  That is tough right now given the cold and ice so I think the best bet for my Dad and I next week is ice fishing.  Any tips on trying to hook into a laker or two?  Morning, evening or anytime of day better generally?

I caught my first three trout ever on Superbowl Sunday morning last year.  Saw a few Steelhead in that spot last weekend.  Maybe a repeat Superbowl catch is in my future...
