  1. I started in 160fow and headed north. Blank screen out to 240. Saw some nice marks but couldn't get anything to go. Out to 280 marked a few more but kept going. Out to 440, 2.5hrs into it. There was this crazy temp break. Choppy water on one side. Dead calm on the other. Crazy slime, weeds, and all the garbage in the lake in between. Soon as I hit it. 220 diver/flasher/fly starts ripping. 18lbs. Put it back down, less than 20 secs later goes again. 10lbs. Started following the line back and forth. Rigger down 100 with mag carbon 14 spoon goes. 13lbs. Time to go. Nice meeting a couple gents at the launch. IMG_6135.JPGIMG_6136.JPGIMG_6137.JPG

  2. Hello All,
Imagine if you could talk to yourself as a kid.  Ask your child-self how you would describe a day where you caught a 10 pound fish.  For most of us, the response would be something like "THE BEST DAY EVER!!!"  I always think of that when things are slow on Lake Ontario.  My motto is, you are always one 10 pound fish away from having a great day.
After a week of unsettled weather, and a big full moon last night, I wondered how good the laker jigging would be today.  Wanting to try something new, I spent the night at Ron Bierstine's "garage lodge" so I wouldn't have to get up so early to drive an hour and a half to thelaunch.  It was nice hanging out with Ron, getting caught up.  But the best laid plans - I woke up at 3:45 AM anyway because I was so excited to fish.
There were plenty of marks down there - much deeper than last week, but following a consistent contour.  And the wind and waves were great for a small boat.  The marks weren't moving towards my jig very often.  All I could do was stick it out and hope things changed.  First bite came at 8:30.  Nice heavy head-shaker and netted up a thirty inch laker.  A ten pounder showed up to make my day suddenly awesome.  An hour later, a second heavy fish tapped.  At the hookset, I knew I would be busy for a while.  Sometimes you feel their weight right when you tighten up.  That one became a 32 incher after a long heave and crank.  Plenty of marks on the graph for the rest of the morning, but no more strikes.
But the day had one last highlight.  The lake turned totally flat calm.  I was able to see my Hopkins spoon coming up from down deep.  On one drop, I "saw some color" while reeling up.  "Why am I seeing that?  I'm not playing a fish!"  Well a roly-poly fish that I think was a salmon followed it right up to boatside!  I tried to jiggle the spoon to seal the deal, but he zipped around it and then dove.  Man!  Turns out there was a mussel on the treble hook that, had it not been there, might have made all the difference.  Wonder how many times that has happened when the surface chop kept me from noticing?
Back at the launch, I met a young guy named Brian that had some luck out deep.  He is a member of this message board, and we had a nice chat after pulling our boats out, comparing notes.
It's been so nice being able to make some trips out, feeling like I am getting back into the swing of things!

Glad I’m still considered “young”. Great job Pete! I’m looking forward to giving laker jigging a shot on Ontario.

  3. Fish were out deeper too, but so were the fleas. Went 6 for 9. 200-250fow. 3 between 12-14lbs. Lost the biggest one at the back of the boat. Lost a very acrobatic steelhead on its third jump. Steelhead were 60’ down, Kings below them. 180 diver with flasher spoon, 200 diver with flasher fly, 400 copper with meat all took fish. Free slider on the 85’ rigger was the only action on riggers. 4. My son Chris and I had a great day out of Point Breeze. We had 4 kings and a Coho in the box at the end and returned a few juveniles. A few hits nobody home also. Stan Kulak's 9 inch Trinidad Tackle dodger out fished the flasher and spin doctor once again! The coho hit the green dodger and Atomik fly combo, and a small king hit the black dodger and bug eye fly combo on a 300 copper. The spiny and flasher flies were silent on the wire divers all day. Most fish came on moonshine mag spoons however, and the largest being 14 lbs. A box of 5, and 3 returned, and a double with kings was the highlight!received_10100386373860980.thumb.jpeg.332c172f9925db6a6442c9d602d3970b.jpegreceived_10100386327124640.thumb.jpeg.c1db3e8dd55bd55a13a9a9c14c555227.jpegreceived_10100386314944050.thumb.jpeg.7251d33c36a10c3fb55e5abb23faf895.jpegreceived_10100386301890210.thumb.jpeg.8d681563724ed56c0ba570b6603f750b.jpeg

  5. Hi laker, I think I might’ve seen you at the launch? I had a 20’ alumacraft and launched at the same time as a guy and his son.  We landed around 15 browns and one steelhead but we fished until 5 pm. All of our fish came just west of the mouth where the water was a little cleaner and there was no mud, not sure if you noticed that little patch.  We caught 10 of the fish on an orange coho crush bay rat, and had the rest on “my secret” color.  Most of the action came off the rods right off our boat, I had around 65 feet of line out, about 30’ of this was 10 lb flouro leader then I had one color of lead core.  The other rods off my boards were just straight mono with flouro leader and I ran about 110-120 feet back with no weight.  Most action was in 11-13 fow but we had no success in the mud.  The fish definitely wanted the bright orange color.

That was us. Thank you! Nice job! I obviously need to pay more attention to water color. Heading out now.

  6. First trip of the year yesterday with my 9 year old son. We fished 11:30-3:30. Went west to Johnson’s Creek and back. Fished 8, 10, 12, 15, and 18fow. Inline boards on braid w 25’ flouro leaders. Back 100’ out 100’. Had a couple colors of lead core w 25’ flouro leader down the chute just off bottom. Various bay rat short shallows and tried a jointed rapala. 2-2.5mph. NOTHING. Going again tomorrow. What do I need to change up? I will be adding some copper and gold backed flutter spoons back 50’ off riggers. My son was so patient and said he still had fun, but would love to see him catch a couple browns. Ran same program last year with success. Help.

  7. Look at the torpedo weighted steel as well. I had a tough time giving up our 450 copper, but after running the weighted steel for a year it's going on all of my long line rods! There's nothing out there that you can get to depths of a 200-600 copper on one reel.
