You will lose fish that rise up into wire diver but if you add a stern planer you can deploy it with out a problem buy running it as a long center . If you have a big fish on you can let it fall  back by free spooling on clicker and fight your other fish under it .

I recently picked up and started using a Church Tackle Stern Planer and do exactly as you describe! It’s fantastic! I was just thinking about adding this Chute diver for another rod I the spread but, starting to think better of the idea!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to answer, really appreciate all the advice!

  2. I am no expert on slide divers but I have used them and have put fish in the boat.  The lite bites are extremely useful when there are a lot of small fish that wont trip the conventional slide diver.  I have yet to find an accurate chart for the stock slide diver using 30 lb braid.  There is some info on their website as to the depth using other weights and lines.  I basically go off of a dipsy dive chart and subtract about 10% as the theory is the SD dont run quite as deep.  I run mine as a high diver out side the deeper dipsy on a 3 or 4 setting with the dipsy on a 1 setting.  I have been using 30 lb braid as mentioned but may have to go to wire when fleas get bad. You are better off using braid or wire instead of mono to avoid the stretch associated with mono.  any stretch makes it difficult to trip the diver.   I use a 30' to 50' section of 40 lb big game mono at the end of the braid for the diver to run on.  A bead is used to keep the diver off of the knot of a swivel thats attached to a 7' 30lb fluro leader. a flasher fly combo was deadly when i was on lake O. in mid May but you can run about any lure or spoon off of them.  Hope this helps a little

Thanks for the reply VooDoo! Just so I’m clear you are subtracting 10% off of the Dipsy that is set on the 1 setting? For example, if you’re running your DD 250’ down on the 1 setting, you are running your Slider 225’ down to achieve a similar depth as the DD? And with the 30 to 50’ of 40lb Mono segment before the bead/Barrel swivel and leader, are you letting out Line only to the connection between the Braid and Mono then locking in the slider or can you let out line beyond the knot and lock onto the Braid?
    Thanks very much!

  3. I’ve narrowed down my choice of a Chartplotter/sonar to the GARMIN GPSMap 942xs to be used solely for trolling for salmon on Lake Ontario. Looking for advice as to the best Chirp frequency range (Low, Medium, High) for this purpose.

    Thanks for any help!

  4. New (to me) boat last year, bought specifically to fish for Salmon on Lake Ontario. Boat came with a Garmin 740s Chartplotter/GPS/Sonar/Radar all in one unit. GPS, Chartplotter and Radar work great, fish finder capabilities, poor at best. Has a dual frequency transducer, 50/200. The 50 interferes with the Fish Hawk and on 200, can’t seem to mark much other than an occasional blip or spec. Long story short, I’m suffering from fishfinder envy when I see pics of everyone’s sonar with Big beautiful arches and streakers going up to the DR line (which I don’t mark either)! Willing to drop up to $1500 on a new unit. Would greatly appreciate advice as to recommendations on an up to date unit that shows me fish so I’m not surprised when I actually hook something? Every fish I’ve caught so far seems like a total accident because I never Mark anything! Also, one that does not interfere with the Fish Hawk! Would like something in a 9” screen or larger.

Thank you very much and apologies for the long winded post!

  5. First year trolling for Browns and we’ve we’ve been having some luck in the shallower depths (5-15 FOW) running Flat Line Mono rods off of Planer boards with spoons and stick baits. What about when you start moving out deeper say, 20+ feet, are guys still running flat lines or are you now adding weight to your rods or perhaps using segmented leadcore rods?

    Thank you !

The 30 lb mono is the main downrigger line followed by a #8 Spro swivel to which a section of fluoro leader (length is personal preference I use about 25 ft). I use 12 lb fluoro for the Finger lakes and 20 lb for Lake O. To that a solid ring ball bearing swivel is attached. This is for spoons from the down riggers and possibly sticks althogh smetimes I omit the swivel for sticks. If you plan to run flasher/fly or Spinny/fly from the riggers no extra leader is necessary and  same for wire line just attach the swivel of the main line to the attractor on the riggers and to the dipsy with the wire. Hope this helps:)

Thank you Sir! I’m just starting out on my first full season coming up and trying to absorb all this mind boggling info! Makes sense as far as the spoons and sticks are concerned! Appreciate the advice!
