  1. what's wrong with wearing a trump hat. fisherman wear different hats all the time. people have trump signs on there cars now. I'm starting to see young people wearing the hats now too.  yes I;m from the far right, very far right. as far as you left wingers go. get an education and pick up a history book and read it. you might have a different opinion about our ways of  thinking and supporting trump. trump is trying to put this country back to the way this country was founded. you people from the far left think this world is all love and fun loving and everything for free. what  makes me laugh when somebody speaks the truth they don't want to hear it.  if you don't like my hat I care less what you think.

  2. I use BoatUS, which is through Geico. Besides replacement and cash value they also have "agreed upon" amount. So I bought a used boat, a 92 two years ago, and what I wanted from my insurance was an amount that would make me whole for what I paid and a few thousand more for the gear I added. Much cheaper than replacement value.

  3. After following this thread for a few days I went back and read the original post....started by an officer, giving everyone a heads up to be sure they have all the proper/required safety equipment...pretty much to avoid being ticketed....and it's turned into a **** session.

I say thanks to all the guys that try to keep "ALL" boaters safe by educating the idiots that buy a boat, and don't take the time to know the laws and regulations...As boat owners...we take other peoples lives into our hands every time we take passengers out for a day of fun.  Not sure about the rest of you...but that weighs kind of heavy on me.  Unlike a car...if there's a fire...you cant get out and run...your in the water..now what?  It's 50 degrees...and everyone only has so long to survive...life jackets...who knew?

    Damn officers...wrote me a $$$ ticket.  I didn't know I needed a fire extinguisher.  Man I got one now.  Makes 100% sense to me...but, I'm pretty dense.

Be safe out there and take 5 minutes to check your safety equipment.  Pretty sure that was the OP's message...and it could possible save a life.

Great post. Its amazing that a thread starts as a heads up on proper safety gear turns into a comedy about cnn, left wing radicals, the communist party, canadians taking your boat, smart phones vs dumb phones, dropping sh@t, flares burning you, cell phone batteries, etc. Who needs reality tv...its all right here.

  4. So if it's the money grab they are in it for then don't break laws, have your required safety gear, and then there is no money to be made. Simple. If they are making so much money like many claim, then there are plenty of boaters not following boating and/or safety rules. That endangers me when I'm out there. I'm glad they're out there checking.

  5. Unreal. If there is justification for the law, in any form, doing safety checks or boat checks all they need to do is read this thread! Is it that difficult for you to ensure you have the required safety items aboard? You make sure sure you got all your thousands of dollars of fishing gear aboard but you piss and moan about a pack of flares and the fact that someone got a ticket. Ensure the safety of you, crew, loved ones, and quit whining. They are doing their job of ensuring water safety for all of us.

  6. It is unfortunate that this thread has taken such a "polarized" path when the actual reality of the situation is that someone has lost their life and a family has been devastated by that fact. Whether the perceived attitude of the involved fishermen was one of overconfidence, "arrogance", or perceived "stupidity"by others is irrelevant at this point. The public information on this incident seems scant thus far so the potential learning benefit is unknown and that is what should be focused on...whether we can learn something specific from the situation that might enable others to avoid a similar fate other than "Don't go out there in rough water". That is what should be sought after here rather than making assumptions and casting blame regardless of one's perception of the situation in the absence of valid concrete information. The basic fact remains that anyone can get into trouble out there including charter captains - and "Mother Nature hath no fury as a woman scorned" and Lake Ontario is no exception- no matter what sized boat,or the experience of the operator; she is unforgiving of mistakes.
    Best post in the thread.

  7. We've all pushed the edge of what we should do more times than we care to admit. Who here hasn't gone out in weather that you were totally uncomfortable with the entire time out there. But you made it back so you put it aside. Who hasn't driven a car after a few drinks...and got away with it and never hurt anyone. Especially when we were young and dumb. Glass houses. The only difference here is something went horribly wrong, could have happened to any of us. Condolences to both families during a very difficult time.

  8. First, Pete is doing what he was hired to do so don't make him the bad guy.

Second, the farmer has every right to lease his property and if you don't like it buy your own land and see what it's like to pay taxes on that land and see how interested you are in letting people hunt for free when you struggle to make a living farming.

Third, you lease so you can hunt with friends and family... paying for guided hunts for 6-8 people is more than 7 grand. If you are retired and can't afford it tough!

Last, if we didn't put excessive value on a stupid set of horns and just hunted for deer like we did for generations leases wouldn't exist.

I do own my own land, and pay the taxes on it. I'm also not retired, just thinking of those on a fixed income. I do not begrudge the farmer who needs this money to offset his taxes or low milk prices, its the same motivation to allow a windmill on your property. Many farmers would have already gone under had they not utilized their land in any way they can. I am a canine trapper with many permissions so I talk and spend time with plenty of farmers so I know their struggles. But I've also lost plenty of permissions because of the exclusivety demanded of the leasees. My 5 or 6 coyote sets on that property will "interfere" with their hunting. So yeah, I'm totally self serving in my opposition to leasing. And you're right, its the hype of big racks on Hunting with Bucky TV that drives this. The spike I took on my own property last year tastes fine.

  9. My perspective was that a forester manages a forest using scientific methods and other methods including logging to benefit the forest. Not brokering for the landowner in procurring a hunting lease at a profit to himself. You asked.
Understand that I come from an era where you could knock on a landowners door, engage in small talk and get permission to hunt those same 450 acres. Now you need to lay down what should be a down payment on purchasing that land. With the lack of public land, especially here in WNY, the leases are preventing the average Joe from being able to find a place to hunt his/her 2-3 times per season to try to put some venison in the freezer. And the state wonders why license sales continue to drop. How many retirees can afford $7000 for a chunk of woods to hunt for 6 weeks.

  10. At 62 years young been fishing since a toddler, most of my years as a flyfishing addict for trout and steelhead and anything I could get on a fly. Over the past 5 years or so I've purchased two boats and spend my time fishing Erie and occasionally Ontario and some smaller lakes trolling for walleye, trout and salmon. But I'd once like to hook up with a large tarpon on a fly ....and would also like to fish the flats in Belize. Someday.
