Sorry , but I must strongly disagree. I have used 19 strand as backing for three years now, without ever a problem. Besides, according to Matthew (the owner of Torpedo)the sink rate of weighted steel carries over to the 19 strand. 200 feet of WS + 200 feet of 19 strand gets you down to 80 feet. This is because of the weight of the 19 strand and the very thin diameter of the 19 strand which gives it very little water resistance. I checked it at 2 mph pulling a magnum lure with a fishhawk TD and it is a fairly accurate statement.
Good to hear! Are you running it off of planers? If so, how are you attaching the 19 strand to board? Thanks

Hey all. Is anybody using 19 strand backer and attaching it to a planer board? If so, how are you attaching it? Also, what knot are you using for the wire to weighted steel?
Thanks

I am a weighted steel user and will not go back to copper
Do you back it with 19 strand? If yes, and run with planer boards, how do you attach to the planer?

I run 200 feet of weighted steel with 300 feet of 19 strand backed by another 600 feet of braid. Clip the 19 strand to a Scotty release as the inside rod running big boards. 19 strand sags a lot more but as long as it's out of the water it gets far enough that I've never had a tangle with a diver.. The stuff works and I've never had a birds nest I couldn't fix in 2 minutes or less. 19 strand holds in the clip just fine. I have two rods set up this way and before July they out fished everything else on the boat 2:1. Fwiw

I thinking about running something similar on Ninja planer boards. What knots do you use for the wire to steel and wire to braid? How many trips and is the 19 strand still holding up? 1000’ of wire plus 200’ of WS should fit perfectly on my saltist 50’s so I might just skip the braid. Thanks

Ill make it very simple we fish just about every weekend and a day or 2 during the week from April through labor day. That includes several tournaments and running charters. Last year for the entire year we ran the torpedo steel line with great results. I will say that the 19 strain wire doesn't read the same on your real line counters that mono does so there is some extra measuring involved. What I did was take it to a large open field and measured in 100 ft sections with a tape measure then looked at the line counter on the reel to see where it was at. Then i just made a cheat sheet till I memorized it. Copper line is easier in that sense cause you just let it out till its all off the reel then you know exactly whats in the water. When it comes to everything else the steel line is much more user friendly. There is no way to kink it and the weight of it makes it much easier to reel in. During tournaments and derby fishing we would run a 45 lb blood run 450 copper on one planner board and the steel line off the other board and everyone on the boat would rather grab the steel to reel in. I will also add that there basically is no difference in the amount of strikes that occurred on the copper as to the steel. There were plenty of days where the 2 rods would take turns with taking shots. This year we are replacing the 450 copper with a 2nd steel line cause of the ease of use. That's saying a lot cause up until last season our 450 copper was by far our most productive non rigger line. Hope this helps good luck and tight lines always!
Hey. I recently purchased a couple of saltist 50lc’s and would like to set them up with weighted steel and a wire backer. How are you connecting the 19 strand to your planner boards? Should I go with a 200 and a 250 or maybe a 150 and a 200? Thanks
Weighted steel. Yay or nay

Got it. I was thinking about using a Sam’s pro release on a church planer board. The pro releases don’t pinch the line and when it “releases” the board would just slide on the line until it hits a bead before the lure. It seems to me that this would be a pretty safe set up for 19 strand. Thanks for your insight
