For only$10 to join a club which promotes Lake Ontario's Salmon and Trout Fishery, it is well worth it since it also funds the Olcott pen rearing. I have personally helped for the last 2 years at the Oak's pen rearing, from putting the pens together , to getting local media there to further promote our cause. With the problems with the hatchery at the Salmon river not getting enough eggs, and with fisherman standing up and helping the DEC this past fall, I hope each port can continue to raise close to the same amount of Salmon and Steelhead, in their respective amounts which we were alotted in the past. Were it not for fisherman helping out the DEC this year who knows what would become of the 07-08 year class of newly born (hatchery raised) Salmon and Trout. Let's just hope we can continue these great efforts to help our fishery in the future. Thank's-Mick

Musky Bob I wouldn't be surprised if we see you with Rachel Ray on her next show with the pace you are running. That is a great recipe for chowder though. Unlike what Ray said use some wine instead of beer for some of the liquid. Leave the beer for Ray- Mick

Like billy said any dipsey can become black with a can of spraypaint. If they are on sale regardless of the color even better. I can't wait for the spring Rock On -Mick

The mount is no where close to the actual fish. Muskie fisherman spend big bucks on fiberglass replicas of the big fish they catch, and the paint job speaks for , and should represent as close as possible the exact fish the person had caught, since catch and release is so vital to sustaining any Muskie fishery in the US. It takes 30 years for a Muskie to become trophy status. For trout and salmon that have only a 4-6 year lifespan to reach trophy status, a skin mount is acceptable since we pretty much have a put in and take fishery on the great lakes. In college I studied art in a smaller school which had a great taxidermy program and I wish I would have went that route. I did talk to many of the other students that had, and I learned that the paint job on evey fish skin mount is what makes the mount. Most of the taxidermy students were enrolled in art classes to further the understanding of painting in taxidermy. I would just get in touch with the taxidermist and ask to have your mount fixed at their cost since you paid them to do a job, and it wasn't done right. It's been a long day Merry Christmas- Mick

Yankee, you are right. We all have (and NYS) a vested interest in the trout and salmon fishery in the lake. I'm no expert but the reason people come and spend their hard earned dollars to vacation, dine out, sightsee, and take a fishing charter is that Lake Ontario has a great fishery that is as equalled to the best worldwide. From April to September Charter Boats run trips which bring money to every port and town surrounding. It's not only tackle shops,restaurants, and motels/hotels that benefit from the fishery, but many other small businesses. Stream fishing in the later months of the year brings in even more revenue. The St. Lawrence and Niagara river with it's great Muskie fishery (please practice catch and release ) Is still another draw. The Niagara River's winter steelhead fishing, and lake trout in the later season draws people from all over the planet. There were many 30lb+ kings caught in lake O this year. I think this group of fisherman we have on this site alone stands for what the state should think about , and continue to provide us with a great fishery. I'm sure that most of the people on this site that live near the lake are involved in a pen project near their home port already. Plus we ALL pay taxes.

The chowder recipe looks awesome Musky. Just don't use Musky as an ingredient in any recipes- (Use Pike) for your book. Just for reference if any of you guys steam clams, or boil shrimp, you could use that broth in place of the can of chicken broth in Musky's recipe.Better flavor if used fresh, or you could freeze it also.

You are using about a teaspoon of dill per pound so that should about do it. Sounds really good though.

Try Using Poultry seasoning for some of the others. Poultry seasoning is pepper, thyme, rosemary, sage. That would give the breakfast sausage taste withought the dill.

Every port has it's time of the year but I have lived around Pointe Breeze since I was born , and have caught all the major species in the lake at some time out of the Oak. (Never a Muskie Though) - I wish. The Oak is full of great fisherman, and fish. -Mick

I had motor problems right after memorial day weekend and didn't get out the rest of the year between my hectic work schedule and family stuff. I enjoyed reading everyone's post's and hope to be able to be out fishing next season. The highlight of the season for me was my son reeling in a skip on a white spin doc - with a hammer fly. We did land a 15 lb king the same day on one of my own painted lures. I was thankfull to meet some of you guys on the site between the Oak Orchard, and the Olcott Pro ams, and look forward to meeting more of you guys in the future. Being the head chef at a resteraunt doesn't leave much time for what is really important in life.- FISHING- ( I also became the drummer for my brother's Band)-METHANOL -See ya on the stream- Mick

Hey guys. My Dinosaur of an outboard is not doing it anymore. I'm looking to buy a 50- 120HP motor to get me through the rest of the season. My boat is a 1975 fiberglass crestliner and is already set up to fish. I am looking to upgrade to a bigger boat in the future , but I need something reliable and reasonable so that I can fish the rest of this season.I would run a 2 or 4 stroke. Got out again this morning with the wife and son. Trolled out to almost 200fow and found a blank screen other than some bait in 50-70 feet. Went northeast out of port and caught a little king not much bigger than the spin doc and Hammer fly it hit.(Wire diver again, and my 4 yr old was more than happy to reel that fish in) Trolled southwest a little past the pumphouse and had a nice hookup on a handpainted nk mag spoon on the rigger. The fish turned out to be a 14 Lb king.(my camera isn't working right now). I wish I could post a pick since that salmon had all kinds of color. Can't wait for the thermocline to set up. I did have some bad luck with the big motor, so I'll be posting in the wanted section to finish off the season. - Mick

In these much clearer waters I'm sure that red shows red further into the light spectrum of the water. Anytime I use flourocarbon I usually have better success. I think that red would look black down deeper. just my thoughts. - Mick

Got out for a few hours before work with my son and father in law. Trolled out to about 80 fow sraight out and headed east. Finally got a diver to work. Ran a dipsey with white spin doc and Hammer fly 150 out on a 2. 10 minutes later(we didn't get out until 8:30) it goes screaming. I am now going to run that wire diver setup anytime I get out this year. The fish ended up being a nice steellie(surprise). We also caught a nice coho, and released both. We took a few other hits and marked lots of bait near bottom and suspended from east of port to the pumphouse. Thank's to all for the great info on flasher/flies. It finally paid off. Took a first time solo run and trolled out to 90 fow going northwest. Ran 1 rigger with a free slider and 3 colors of leadcore with a red/silver/glow ladderback nk. The currents were wicked frow west to east and slowed down to 1.8-2 and marked a fish at 30 and pulled the rigger up a few feet and sat back down and BAMM!!! A Nice steelie flew out of the water and grabbed the rod. The steelie hit a 44 nk handpainted half orange/silver with a brass back. It was a little crazy trying to land a fish alone but I did it. A nice 8 lb steelie on the rapala grip. I tried to release, but it floated so went back and scooped it. At least it ended my 5 trip fishless streak. The surface temp was 50+/- degrees all the way out other than small breaks. It was a great start to my busy weekend and my day. I didn't even get out until 10 am. I also am using 20lb big game. I've gotten out 4 times for the derby already and not even 1 fish. Went from the Oak down to Shadigee , East to Eagle creek and everywhere in between. I'm going to give it one more try in the morning and have to work until Monday after that. The best picture i found was out deeper in 100- 120 fow but that was last Saturday and they weren't cooperating. I even tried a Habenaro
