  1. How many hours should a freshwater only Crusader 454 inboard last if it is properly maintained? Iv herd of them lasting 3000 plus hrs In some cases, and iv also herd that anything over 1500hrs. Is high for them. Any input is appreciated. Thx

Whoever told you that was woefully misinformed. I've owned 4 454's and put over 6000 hours on all of them without any significant repairs.
My 10M has two original 454 Crusaders with over 6000 hours on each. The ONLY thing I've had to do to them was put new heads on each. Change oil every 85 hours with Shell Rotella 15/40 and don't beat them up and they will last forever.

  2. Say what you want, this was a non issue thread. I would have thought Paul would have been busier this time of year then watching other charters fillet fish.

It's now quite obvious you have an issue with me personally. Since you don't have the testicular fortitude to use your real name I'm not giving this thread any more of my time. The charter in question was dumping carcasses in Olcott harbor against DEC regulations. End of story.
Btw mr anonymous "shorelunch"----I've had 2 days off since July 1. I fish every day, unlike you who sits in his Wilson cottage looking down his nose at the rest of the world.
I'll be back in Wilson next May if you want to address your issues with me personally.

  3. This topic was a joke.  Seems like you just wanted to call out another charter.  You should have left that p.o.s rundown bar and had a word with him if it upset you so bad.  If you read the post correct Paul mature kings die every SUMMER. Every one that is picked up trolling dies. 20 minute fight, slapped on the hot deck, and 600 twitter pics taken for your account.  Then the fish is released only to wash to shore. These kings do not revive out there.  They all die after being fought.

It was a legitimate topic with a legitimate issue that was witnessed firsthand. If I wanted to "call out" a charter I would have named them.
It wasn't about that, or releasing fish or what a "dump" olcott is or anything else you tried to make it. Please get over yourself and stay in Wilson.
Btw---I'll eat wings wherever I feel like it and don't need your lectures telling me what I should do now go away.

  4. You should send your info to the guy that runs olcott marina there.  Believe his name is Scott Schfler.  I can't believe there were 5 mph south winds out there today but people would rather debate on how far off shore Salmon guts should be dumped.  No offense Paul but you do understand every mature king we catch in a season out there dies. Yes EVERY mature dies after fighting and taking por*o shots with it for twitter pages.  That is what happens when a fish goes from 40 degree water to a 90 degree boat deck.  Is that charter who is dumping guts into that newfane marina really hurting the place. Have you guys opened your eyes to what that marina looks like.  It should be located in downtown buffalo, what an eyesore.  Come to Wilson if you guys really don't want to put up with such a minor problem.

Really??? Mature kings die?? Every year???
    Smh

Olcott marina is hardly an "eyesore". Hedleys is a dump. Get off your high horse and look at the DEC regulations regarding the disposal of fish carcasses. That is what this post was about. The charter in question was violating DEC regulations by dumping carcasses in a marina within 100' of shore.

Btw my boat is in Wilson every May and in Point Breeze the rest of the year. I happened to see the incident in question as I had wings with my son at the Time Out.

  5. Wow that's messed up....

If the cleaning station is anything like Wright's I don't know why he would do that. The one at Wright's is fantastic.

Olcott's station is awesome. Even if it was out of order the boat was set up to clean on the water and the catch could easily have been cleaned on the lake and the carcasses disposed of in accordance with DEC regs.
It's a despicable display of laziness.

  6. Usually happens when fish are or have been hanging around, out of temp, in warmer water. Is what I was told.

No. Scales fall off summer steelhead and cohos because the scales are not mature. No different than pin feathers on a bird, they only mature when the fish is nearing maturity or its spawning cycle. Cohos spawn later than kings so their scales don't mature until late August or even September. Steelhead are late winter/spring spawners so their scales mature even later than that.
You will also see scales falling off immature 1 and 2 year old kings at any time of the year.

  8. Today we used the clip for the first time. Worked great, head first. But my partner just needs to get the net into the water about halfway so I slide the fish in! Lost two today because he did not get the net into the water and the fish slid under.

Sounds like you need a new partner or someone to give you both lessons. 🤣

  9. Thanks for the info guys. I just hope the fishing remains good this year. Last year after the lake flipped the fishing was terrible and it never rebounded.

It flipped two weeks ago and the fishing remained spectacular. Don't dwell on the past. It is what it is---this year IT is incredible!!!

  10. anybody know if it flipped?

It started to. Cold water moved into the inside over night so almost everyone that fished this morning fished offshore. Fishing was very good!
By midafternoon the bait had already moved back in and I'm sure the salmon were headed there as well.
The big north wind tonight and tomorrow may tighten that inside up or possibly blow it apart. The offshore fishery is very good if there's nothing inside 180.

  11. Imagine how much time is spent untangling fly hooks from net mesh. Imagine how many hooks get impaled into hands while trying to untangle a pissed off fish from a big bulky net.
When I fished salmon in Lake Erie in the early 80's a net was only used for the occasional walleye or smallmouth. All cohos and kings were gaffed! Wake up NY!! [emoji35]
