  1. hi all,

the redcross will be my first derby and i'll be jigging for lakers. I don't have a livewell and i understand that dead fish tend to lose some of their weight. Normally, when i catch a laker, i cut their throat to bleed 'em and put them directly on ice or in ice water (keeps them fresh for the table).

do you think a large laker will stay alive if i keep water in a large cooler cold (around 50 degrees by adding ice throughout the day)?

any other thoughts about how to keep a laker alive without a livewell?

    many thanks,

    dre

  2. I've been doing some initial research on the fishawk X4. I bet me trolling catch rate would increase but $600 is a lot of money.

Reading the x4 manual, they say that repairs for either the probe or the display is a "flat rate" $185 - that seems like a lot too.

for those who have had the x4 for a while, how reliable has it been?

    have you needed any repairs?

they say the probe is "bulletproof" - have any of you ran it (accidentally) into bottom? still working?

many thanks for any info - i'm leary of the "reviews" i read that are not on forums like this.

  3. i've been thinking about getting an X-4 also, but i fish hemlock lake mostly and like to hug the structure, and with hemlock's funky structure and being less shallow than seneca, cayuga, etc., i'm afraid that even if the X-4 is a few feet above my rigger ball, that i could damage or break the x-4 when i hit bottom with my ball.

Is the X-4 easily detachable from the rigger cable?

  4. Hi all,

i have never fished a derby and even after reading the brochure for the red cross derby, i'm not sure what the rules are for winning. I know there are 2 lunker categories - the biggest bass and the biggest salmonid when the lunker prize. Regarding lake trout (and other salmonid categories) - do you weigh in a 5 fish limit (or 3 fish for lakers) or is that also just the 1 largest fish for each salmonid.

i plan to primarily jig, so i will probably only catch lakers. In short, when i weigh in, should i just bring my biggest laker or all 3 lakers?

    thanks,

    andre

  5. Hi all,

i've never fished a trout derby and am curious about the Red Cross Derby.

Will someone give me some details, such as:

    Dates

    entry fee

is it one fingerlake or all of them?

all salmonids or just lake trout?

what are the prizes for? biggest fish only? how many get prizes (biggest only or top 5 etc)

    many thanks,

    dre marquis

  6. i shot at 3 deer with my bow this year - all with grim reapers. The first was at 12 yards. I didn't recover it, but my friend shot it less than 24 hours later. I had hit it in the shoulder and we never found the arrow! (and my bow is nearly 300 fps)!

the second 2 deer i shot were both pass thrus - 15 and 35 yds.

i don't know what to think of that first shot and it not going thru the first shoulder, even if it wasn't a pass thru.

  7. i second (or third) you, Greg. I have never got a buck in the 130 class and i passed up a 150+ the other day (at 15 yards!!!!!) because i couldn't get the beast to stop his fast walk/trot. I had my pin right on him but it's just not worth it (from an ethical hunter's perspective). Sure, it's possible i could have got a clean kill, but 10-20 times more likely that IF i hit it, it would have been wounded or died without my finding it. Trying to decrease the # of hunters who shoot at running deer is the reason i'm against allowing pump and semi-autos, whether rifles or shotgun.

on a related (unethical) note - i had my best climbing tree stand stolen from some public lands - WAY back in the thick stuff, thru all the multifloral rose etc. I had it lock with a huge chain and masterlock. I couldn't believe it - some A%@hole goes in there with a bolt cutter!!!! man, there are a lot oo shooters (i almost called the "hunters") who give us hunters a bad name/reputation.

  8. i'd feel far safer with people shooting one shot of a rifle than the too-common unethical hunter who shoots five slugs at running deer.

if a hunter is hunting from a tree stand, the bullet will go into the ground, whether from a rifle or shot gun

also, given that much of the hunting in the fingerlakes is heavily wooded, even a rifle bullet fired from ground level is unlikely to go much further than a slug (will be stopped by trees)

personally, i'd like to see rifles legal but semi-automatics and pump guns illegal. I believe an ethical hunter doesn't take more than one shot without moving the gun from his shoulder = bolt or level action is fine (for a second follow up shot, but not for 3-5 shots that are obviously low percentage shots)
