    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

    ====================

Took the neighbor and went out for a 'coupla hours' in the small boat - started at about 90fow headed for 100 ( had done a coupla fish there on Tues) - nothing doing there other than some pretty solid waves so we moved in and towards the east ( we were seeing some boats that direction) once we got inside 80fow we found some good temp, bait and marks.

Firts hit was on Stingray gator out 210 on wire set at 2.5 - fish made one good run and came unbuttoned. Shortly after the Gator SD combo on the wire out 190 at a 2.5 went and after about 10 minutes we netted a nice 25#king. Reset and about 10 minutes later the Gator combo went again, as fish was making it 2nd run a stingray nuke killer at 72 on a rigger went - we landed both ends a nice 29ish king and a solid teenager ( which was released).

As we were landing the double a guy next to us laned an nice fish - he & I chattted over the gunwales and he said he had landed 3 in a row off a 42snd spoon set at 71 - so I set one . About 5 minutes later the 42snd went , fish made a good run and came unbuttoned. Resharpened hooks and reset and about 5 minutes later it went again - fish made a good run and came unbuttoned - so sharpened hooks again and reset - and you guessed it 5 minutes later it goes and fish comes unbuttoned ( thot about throwing spoon in without attaching it to a line ;) )

As I was resetting the 42snd again the Green Nuke SD/Crinkle fly on other rigger went with a nice 24# king.

Reset the spread one last time but by then had trolled out of the good area - we agreed we should make 1 more pass (even though we were supposed to be home by this time) so we turned around and headed back thru the area - after a short distance the GatorSD combo on the wire fired and as the fish was making a good run the 42snd on the rigger fired- we got both ends of the double ( teenage king and 8# BT)

Since we both were planning to be home early and since it was already 11:30 we cleared and ran for the launch

While it had started as a slow day the last couple of hours were very interesting - the fish knocked all of the finish off the back half on the Gator SD ( its an interesting yellow color now but keeps taking fish) and about half the tape off the 42snd spoon - it turned out to be a great day!!!

out alone in the little boat so didnt want to run off shore - stayed inside - lots of fish & bait in 130 fow in the bottom 20 feet. All 3 hits came on the Gator SD/tourney fly.

  3. Thanks for the replies guys!!

Guess I shouldnt be suprised that there are strong feelings both ways

I decided not to limit my options so I had already set up as trouble shooter suggested with a 5th base centered up on the back - I am gonna try 3 for awhile and see what I think - but will keep the 4th rigger up in cuddy and can make the change to 4 in about 3 minutes if I need to

    ====================

Nice day on the water if you were not fishing ;)

We worked 250 - 500 fow - marked some bait and fish , threw asstd stuff at them but couldnt get much of anything to go - water temps are kinda screwed and there was a pretty heavy current in spots. Hopefully things get stabilized shortly

  5. I am seriously considering reworking the Downrigger arrangement on my Sabre and going from 4 riggers to 3.

I currently have 2 riggers mounted on the rear corners and 2 mounted up the gunwales that i run as out/downs. I can easily mount a 3rd rigger in the center of the back ( in line with the 2 corner riggers.) I would run the corner riggers turned 90 degrees out the side (with booms extended to get more reach) and the center rigger straight back

My sabre is an outboard with an SST ( extended transom) and I am trolling with a kicker but a longer arm rigger will easily reach over the main OB and I can swing to a 45 and use a retroease to set the line.

I think this arrangement will give me much better separation on my riggers and now that we are running more divers and copper rigs I am thinking 3 riggers will be enough. I also feel like it will open up the back of the boat more by giving me more open area on sides

So with all that said I am looking for input from others , feedback from folks running 3 riggers, etc

    Thanks

    Ted

  6. thanks for the input guys

I had previously installed one of these on a buddies boat and did that one 'by the numbers'. Since I am planning on changing riggers before next season I was just looking for input on risks of winding over the old cable - I had hoped someone had already tried it

I did the install yesterday and decided somebody had to be first so I did wind it over existing . Counter impact was minimal and initial performance was normal . Time will tell

    Ted

  7. I own both a fish hawk and a depth raider. They both do a good job of supplying the info you need so IMO the decission on which one to buy comes down to a personal assessment of the pros & cons of the units.

Based on my experiences here is my list of those

    Fish Hawk

    Pros

-Slightly easier install ( no work on downrigger needed)

    -no coated cable to manage/protect

    Cons

    - Expense ( unit is about 20% more in cost)

    - Requires install of a fairly large transducer - space on transom may be an issue

    Depth Raider

    Pros

    - lower cost

    Cons

    - Requires antenna on Rigger boom

    - requires coated cable

As I said above both of these units are solid performers and either is a pretty straight forward install. I dont think you can make a bad decission here

    good luck

    Ted

  8. I expected the counter would be off slightly but to be honest i doubt they are that precise anyway so I can handle that - I was looking for a 'shortcut' since I expect to replace these current downriggers with cannon mag5hs in spring - this just seemed like an simple & quick approach to get up & running and then allow me to uninstall quickly and have the old riggers sale ready

  9. OK - Based on the rave reviews from many members here I bought a Depth Raider to install on the little multi species boat.

I plan to install today but had a question about it

Has anyone installed the coated cable by just splicing to the end of their existing cable ( using a couple of crimps) and winding it right over the top - seems like this would be very simple to do and would solve any cannon shortstop issues ( I will be using the removable probe setup similar to what has been posted here) . My only concern with this would be potential wear on coated cable where it is touching the reg cable on the spool -

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated

    Thanks

    Ted

Took a neighbor who had hever fished Lake O out with the small boat . Hopes were high based on yesterdays reports but alas things were very slow for us ( and many other boats based on the radio chatter)

Ran to 100 and set 2 riggers & 2 wires - made 3 passes in 100 - 120 , running asstd rigs but never moved a rod - marked some scattered bait & fish but....

Decided to head deeper and turned NW - at about 150 FOW A Stingray Gator set @ 73 fired - at first fish seemed lazy -thot maybe a laker - then the fish decided to show its chops and took about 150' ofline in a flash. Neighbor did a great job of handling fish ( with a broken collar bone) and a few minutes later I slid net under a nice king ( weighed 26-4 when I weighed it about 5 hrs later)- not bad for his first LO fish.

Worked the 150 water for a while, then worked on out to 200 and back in- marked very few fish and very little bait , at 110 FOW a DW 42nd spoon set at 88' popped witha 5-6# laker.

    Off water about 13:00

    I have had 2 Sabres a 22' Greatlakes with a 175hp v6 IO and my current boat - a 20' Greatlakes with an SST transom , 120 hp Outboard and a 9.9 4stroke kicker.

I have also fished with several friends that own Islanders or Sylvans of the same vintage.

The big differences I saw when I was initally shopping back in the later 80's was that the Sabre was all welded ,considerbly heavier than the other two and the 30" gunnal height made the boat very comfy when setting rods in nasty waves.

All three of the ones you mentioned fished fine but I believe the Sabre was the best . Of course with the extra weight comes less gas efficiency and also requires some heavier towing capabilities

    ====================

Took the 'big' boat out yesterday with a few folks from office . After waiting out the brief downpour we got about 5:45 we set up & launched at mouth of Ibay. Ran out to 120 and saw asstd bait pods/ fish on screen so set up. Water was a bit snotty so started a NW troll. Was an uncomfortable troll all day with little to show for it . Tried asstd baits & colors - Wires never took a hit . All hits came on DW Shiznit down 80.

Hopefully it was just a bad day cause it kind of feeds into my less is more concern from a week or two ago - I seem to catch many more fish out of the little multi species boat that I do when I am in the sport fisherman. Or maybe its just that i dont seem to be able to catch many fish in the IBay/Genny area all my good trips this summer have been from Sandy Creek?????

  14. Is there a list of VHf channels that are typically used by the LOU'rs at the various port on LO south shore

Ive got all the chores done and its time to start getting some more fishing in. Since I amon a trailer and located in Rochester I thot I might try visiting some of the other locals ( Oswego, Oak,Sandy, etc)

    Thanks

    Ted

  15. Jim

I have both the 1pc 7' Ugly sticks and some 2 piece ones - they both are great and after using them I got rid of all my 8 1/2 Diawas. ( I too am vertically challenged)

I personally like the 7' 1pc light action ones and have landed numerous decent sized kings on them . That said if storage is an issue the 2pc will definately better in that area and they are also excellent rods

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

    ====================

Out solo again this morning and it was another quality trip. Started slow ( didnt move a rod for first 45 minutes ) but then things got better. had 3 kings ( one upper teens and 2 juvies), 3 Steelies ( 5 - 10 lbs), 2 Cohos ( one about 8 and one real nice one closer to 12) . All fish except the larger king came on a NK THAT spoon set at 57 feet , 33 back. That spoon also took 2 other hits where fish was out of water in back of boat at virtually same time the rod released and I never caught up with them. Gator SD/Atomik green crinkle at 81 took the larger king - it also took one other hard hit but when i got there no one was home.

Hilite of the morning was landing both ends of a double ( the larger king and a mid size Steelie)

Headed home for 40th reunion so wont be back out til next week

The big question in my mind is ' is less more?'. I have been fishing alone in my little multi species boat with simple electronics and 2 mini mag DRs . If I had been out in the sport fisherman with a bunch of guys, fishing multiple lines with a full electonic suite would I have caught more fish??

  17. I always had rollers until my current boat ( 20' aluminum Crestliner Sabre) . As Ray indicates it sets lower and trailers better but it is a bit harder to load. I have the bunk slicks on my trailer and also a big electric winch - not sure I would want to hand crank it on much.

In general rollers seemed better for loading but the bunks seems better for everything else

Out solo again this morning (really need to find some fishing partners) . NWS said 1ftrs which they finally settled to about 9ish but early on they were2-3. Ran out to where I was hitting them last Thu and set up with a Gator SD/TourneyTG down 77 and a stinger 42snd down 61 about 5 minutes later the SD goes and it was a heavy fish that just went deep and sulked - cleared everything, took boat out of gear and finally landed the brute ( 22 minute fight) - pegged the 25lb scale ( I would guess 27 - 28) - cpred nicely . Reset and a few minutes later the SD was off & running again - this time the king was about 20 and also released. Then hit 2 steelies aboth about 8 on the same SD/fly in the next 30-45 minutes. At that point I changed the spoon rod over to a stinger gator and it took a juvie king and then a 10#LT in the next hour . Once I had the LT released I decided to finish clearing the rigs and headed home for the day

After reading all the great reports I knew I had to get out so i took the small boat and went solo. Ran 2 rods off the DRs. All the hits came on a DW 42snd spoon 35 back and 61 down. Couldnt get anything going on SDs/paddles. Two tenage kings, a 8-9 lb steelie and real nice very fat coho - all fish cpred & released. The fleas were rather annoying ( even on the fleaflicker line) and the insects were rather thick this morning. Dropped the last 3 fish hit so decided between the fleas, bugs and heat to hang it up about 9:30. Hope to be back out this weekend
