"Juvenile Atlantic sturgeon are at the highest level recorded in the Hudson River in the last 10 years. These survey results are an encouraging sign for the recovery of Atlantic sturgeon," Acting Commissioner Seggos said. "We are cautiously optimistic that, with our continued vigilance and efforts to protect this species, Atlantic sturgeon will have a secure future." Commercial fishing rates for Atlantic sturgeon exceeded the ability of the fish to replenish themselves in the late 1980s and early 1990s. New York led the way in conservation through implementation of a harvest moratorium for Atlantic sturgeon in 1996. In 1998, an amendment of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic sturgeon resulted in a coast wide moratorium on Atlantic sturgeon harvest for 40 years and aimed to protect two generations of females in each spawning stock. The juvenile Atlantic sturgeon abundance survey began in 2006 as part of the DEC's Hudson River Estuary Action Agenda. The survey was designed by DEC in collaboration with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and was implemented to track the response of Atlantic sturgeon to the closure of commercial sturgeon fisheries. Since sturgeon are a long-lived species, with Hudson River fish beginning to spawn at 10 to 20 years old and living as long as 60 years, signs of recovery were expected to be slow. This slow pace of recovery contributed to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) listing Hudson River Atlantic sturgeon as Endangered in 2012. Encouragingly, biologist are now seeing a steady increase in the number of Atlantic sturgeon in the Hudson River as the first protected fish are coming into their prime breeding years. As identified in the NMFS Atlantic sturgeon status review, threats remain, including from accidental mortality when other fish are harvested along the Atlantic coast, habitat degradation, impingement and entrainment from water withdrawals, and mortality from vessel strikes. DEC continues to monitor these threats and evaluate and implement measures to prevent or mitigate their impact on Atlantic sturgeon. In addition to breeding populations, DEC also maintains publicly available records of sturgeon deaths to monitor the status and assess threats to the population. In June 2012, in response to the Federal "endangered" listing of the species, DEC updated its website to direct all reports to a centralized location. Since improving data collection, the number of reported sturgeon deaths began to rise. DEC considers the current level of sturgeon mortality a serious matter, and continues to evaluate options to better determine the cause of mortality and options for prevention. However, the increase in reported sturgeon mortality reported to the DEC is likely related to the increase in outreach and centralization of sturgeon mortality reporting and the increased abundance of Atlantic sturgeon in the Estuary, rather than a specific source or project. In addition there is no evidence that the construction of the replacement for the Tappan Zee Bridge is the cause of the increased number of reported sturgeon mortality, as the wide geographic spread of the reported mortalities (129 miles in 2015; 56 miles in 2014) suggest that the cause of the mortalities is not occurring at a discrete site. DEC continues to participate in the development of the ASMFC stock assessment for the Atlantic sturgeon, scheduled for completion in 2017. This assessment will summarize the current coast wide status of the species and identify opportunities to continue making progress toward the recovery of the species. 5. Please Donate to Save the Seneca White Deer January 16th, 2016 Comment on this Article The following is a guest post submitted by Joel Helfrich. Submit your story today. The fate of the largest herd of white white-tailed deer in the world is at stake. But you can do something to help. Although these deer are not albino, they are extremely rare. Their very presence is a small miracle. The Seneca white deer have thrived for decades within a 10,000-acre fenced former military munitions supply base called the Seneca Army Depot, about an hour-long drive from Rochester, which provided munitions for all U.S. wars between World War II and the first Gulf War… After trying for 15 years to entice businesses to locate at the Depot, the Seneca County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) has decided to sell the property. Bids opened in December 2015 and close on February 29, 2016. As a result of the IDA’s actions, the fate of the white deer is to be determined. The IDA’s announcement has created an opportunity for a not-for-profit 501©(3) organization that I support calledSeneca White Deer, Inc. (SWD) , to purchase a portion (likely 2-3,000 acres) of the remaining 7,000-acre parcel and convert it to a world-class ecotourism facility—arguably the first such facility in New York State. If successful, the white deer herd would be saved. Moreover, the Depot would be open for tours; bicycling, camping, and hiking; visits by veterans, schoolchildren, and citizen taxpayers; and eventually offer an opportunity for tourists to stay at the base. In fact, SWD tickets sold out during its tours in 2006, 2009, and 2012. Other considerations include wetland restoration, a solar energy field, a Cold War Museum, and all types of conservation biology work. There is also the possibility that a coalition of universities would use the space, as was seen with Applied Sciences NYC. Imagine a coalition of universities that would join together, locate together, and tackle sustainability concerns and climate change. I know that the SWD’s plan will work because the organization’s unpaid director, Dennis Money, has a proven track record of making conservation projects work, first by reintroducing the peregrine falcon to Rochester, then by helping the River Otter, then running the Genesee Waterway Center , among many other activities. Astoundingly, the plan by SWD is supported by groups as diverse as The Nature Conservancy (a conservative environmental organization), the editors of the Democrat and Chronicle, the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce, tourism groups, winery owners, and other businesses, among many others. People have traveled to the Depot in recent years from as far away as Alaska, California, Texas, and Kansas, just to see the white deer. It is believed that the Seneca Army Depot’s white deer will draw people from various international climes, once SWD assumes control of the property. I ask that you share this blog post with anyone you know who might be able to help support the SWD’s fundraising efforts. PLEASE NOTE: John and Josephine Ingle, owners of Heron Hill Winery on Keuka Lake, have promised a $200,000 challenge grant if SWD can match the money by January 31, 2016. Your donations, large and small, will help. Seneca White Deer is working closely with The Nature Conservancy to become a serious bidder. This will be the only opportunity to save the white deer and the Depot’s history. If unsuccessful, the acreage will likely go to Amish and other farmers and the white deer will be lost forever. • • • For additional reading, see: Walter Gable and Carolyn Zogg, The Seneca Army Depot: Fighting Wars from the New York Homefront Seneca White Deer, Inc. 16. ..... VISITOR POSTS Tim Thomas Yesterday at 10:32pm Anglers are gearing up the Chaumont Bay Team event this weekend! Since we have received multiple reports of sketchy ice at the State Boat Launch, we will be moving the check-in/registration and shotgun start to the beach access point. When coming out of town heading towards the state boat launch, take the first left after the bridge before the state boat launch rd. The beach access is at the end on the left. We will try to have IPA Event signs posted to help guide anglers. We are also posting the registration and check-in forms online so anglers can print them off and have them filled out ahead of time to streamline the check-in process. You can also register and pay online via PayPal to make check-in even quicker - just visit the websitewww.NYSiceproam.com and click on "registration". At this time we are going to allow motorized transport for this event - based on ice thickness and number of teams participating, we may implement a staggered start and have multiple rows of teams spaced out with the earliest teams getting the front row positions. Keep this in mind when planning your arrival time! To get everyone pumped for the event, check out last year's shotgun start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm5mH_pEKek This is the last chance to get in on the Triple Crown Series Title ($100 entry) and go for the overall Series Title and coveted Cup Trophy! ‪#‎NYSiceproam‬

Once you place your car in neutral, it is then you will find that your car is moving backwards...uphill! While this strange phenomenon is most popularly demonstrated with a car, it is also said to have worked with people on bikes, general round objects and even water.......
