  1. Post your line. Ask them to call before crossing the line. Meet them at the line and ask where was the deer standing &  point of impact. I had a guy who was “tracking a deer” up into my treestand. Caught him a second time and I called the DEC. I requested that I the right to refuse him access for any reason and the DEC agreed and tracked him down. Trespassing is trespassing. They put others safety at risk.
I would love to walk through some of these trespassers backyards with a loaded 12 gauge.

  2. Below is a great article on mortality rates of catch and released salmon.

Here are a few tips i think help to catch and release trout and salmon from a boat.

Don't keep the fish out of the water long, every second counts.

Keep the fish from slamming their head off the bottom of the boat by keeping them lifted in the net while quickly removing the hook.

Be ready with a camera for a quick pic if a pic is desired.

Use a fish gripper with the strap around your wrist, the gripper on the fishes bottom lip and give them a few minute ride to catch their breath.

After you feel them kick a bit, grab there tail and give them a big push.

  3. FYI Guys.

    Fish Cleaning Law

It is illegal on New York State waters to possess walleye, black bass, brook trout, lake trout or Atlantic salmon that have been cut, dismembered, filleted, skinned or otherwise altered so that the species and total length of such fish cannot be easily determined. However, these fish may be gilled or gutted. Other species of fish may be filleted provided that the skin is not removed from the fillets. This regulation allows more effective enforcement of harvest regulations on protected game fish.

  4. The DEC implementing rules without any evidence is terrible.  5 more years of the same old, same old.  We rely on them to make changes based on evidence, data, and science and they implement a 2 week antlered hiatus during bow season as a way to increase antler-less harvest. There's no evidence that it is an effective plan of increasing antler-less harvest.  At least APR's have been shown to increase antler-less harvest in other states.

How many hunters and where you hunt are factors but, New York could be a destination state for deer hunting like Ohio & Wisconsin.  We have the genetics & environment for big deer but, hunter mentality & the DEC keep us from achieving it.

"QDMA means small deer are spared and less tags filled means less deer shot." Hmm??? Not exactly.

Harvesting enough does and protecting young bucks would provide a chance at a balanced age structure with both bucks and does, fill all our tags, and meet the states needs to manage the herd. While rack size is a genetic factor, we rarely get to see giants simply because we shoot them when they are young, not because the genetics don't exist here in NY.  We need herd balance. I just don't think we will ever be anything other then a "meat hunter state" while this is voluntary.

License sales are dropping.  Hunting has to compete with all sorts of things now and how are you supposed to keep a young persons interest when the quality of the hunt is lacking so? Would you troll around Lake O if there were slim chances at catching a fish, just to be out there? How many seasons like last year would it take with bad fish numbers before you started fishing Erie more???

  5. Great??? Plenty of trophys??? OK...

I'm lucky enough to hunt the land I own behind my house in an area that holds big "NY bucks".  I still leave the peak of the NY rut to hunt out of state every year for the same reasons stated by BigWilly.  Out of state, I find laying off on a 3.5 yo deer is one of the toughest decisions to make.

The majority of bucks shot in NY are less then 1.5 yo. Learning to judge a deer's age accurately on the hoof is a skill that requires training which some spend time doing, some don't care about, and some are misinformed.

AR's do protect approximately 50% of yearling bucks their first year.  So, whatever their genetics, they get a chance.  I would suggest that headgear is one of the poorest indicators of genetic superiority of whitetails.  Instincts, resistance to disease, intelligence, & body configuration,  etc, would all be more favorable genetic characteristics then a large rack.  I've seen many big racked bucks get whooped by more aggressive smaller bucks. Some big racked bucks just aren't as strong & aggressive as others.  Just imagine if our hair alone told you everything about our genetic makeup.
