Thanks for that info Rich...I thought it was all 1 big company out there on the point. The cooling tower is not associated with Fitz, that is part of the cooling system for Nine Mile 2. There are 3 plants on the point, Fitz is the red building. There is still a slight possibility we can be saved, but very slight. Our gov needs to stop being such am idiot and remember upstate does exist!!! The whole area is going to feel the effects if this plant closes.
Capt Rich.
I read where Ginna Nuke Plant will also be closing soon...2017 it said.Makes you wonder how many more years the remaining 2 reactors will continue operations at 9 mile pt. after Fitzpatrick shuts down next year.

I'm surprised no one has posted about the Fitzpatrick Nuke Plant, nine mile point outside Oswego is officially going to shut down late next year 2016. Entergy corp say's competition from cheaper energy from other sources has made it unprofitable for them to continue it's operations there. Producing electricity from nuclear energy must be very expensive. They said just under 400 of the 610 employees will be laid off by December 2016....then more in the distant future.
The Cooling tower steam cloud plume has been a weather , wind direction and strength indicator for the entire Mexico Bay and Salmon River fishing fleet for years ,both before leaving the dock and while on the water. It will seem weird to look up and not see that steam cloud plume anymore.
They did not mention any other energy producing plans to hook into those massive electric wires that begin at the plant and head south...eg wind turbines etc.
The Plant closing will have an enormous economical impact in the Oswego county area.

Tell him Congrats...nice oneMy buddy got a nice one this morning with his recurve

Well "skinny buck" and another small buck got bullied around yesterday and today. This nice buck took over my property and claimed all the does, 1 of which is real close to being ready...probably tomorrow. He's 11 or 10 pts. , I've seen him a few times this summer along the river , and down the road, but always at or into the dark. Finally got to get some pictures of him today shadowing 1 doe. It was exciting for me to watch him do his thing for a good 45 minutes or so this morning....loved every minute of it, and he got to within 30 yards at 1 pt. and I could swear he had a split or double brow...but the pics don't really confirm that....anyway, here are some pics...let me know what you think...hope you like them.
Grunting, pretty loud set

Took these pics today between 1 and 1:30pm just south of Sandy Pond , looking north towards Lakeview, and South West towards the power plant.
The roar of the surf was deafening, and the sight of the large whitecapping waves was awesome. It probably got even bigger and better, but never made it back there later in the day.

You may remember my post last month about the concern I had for a young 7 pt. buck with his thin hind end, neck, and his ribs showing despite all the food available in and around my yard this spring and summer. I took the pictures of him in my original post the first week of September. Well, just a few hours ago in a light rain shower just before dark, I took a few more pictures of him to share with you guy's.
Adk1 , Momay4000, Tile Man Dan and WW IV, you guy's were right on the money saying he will be fine....I really didn't think so. But I have been seeing him on and off these last 7 weeks and sure enough, little by little, he has been filling in nicely.
Sept.3
This afternoon
How's he looking ?

OK Glenn. I'm home today , but heading north up to Lake O tomorrow morning. They are predicting 10 to 14 ft waves near shore from Mexico Bay to the St. Lawrence....and 14 to 16 footers offshore.Steve if you happen to get any good pictures of the Lake I would appreciate if you could email some to me.
Thanks
The Lake vision camera in Oswego is f'd up

Weather underground marine forecast is showing those winds to shift from south east to south west then west by Thursday night....40knots with 14 to 16 ft seas offshore ( 10 to 14 ft nearshore Mexico Bay to the St. Lawrence) . East and northeast NY shoreline might take a pounding and the islands ,Galloo and Stoney, too....if this prediction is correct.... and when and for how long the south west and west shift lasts.

Nice job old man and tigerhunter !

Due to the population explosion of these nasty cormorants, stocking browns by barge should be standard procedure... period. A back up barge should be ready if the primary barge is unavailable, due to a weather delay etc..Yes 2015 Mike. Hopefully they will have good weather in 2016 to allow use of the barge for the brown stocking.

Good one, and thanks Bruce reeleyz. You just made me think about the guy that screams Fish On ! then sheepishly whispers "rock" as he tries to unsnag his rig from the bottom.Nice pics choo choo. I have a buddy that drags his fish like that. It gets the slime off really well.
I love the way they yell FISH ON and whisper fish off.

No I did not see the fight, but I figured there might be one with all the different personalities fishing side by side on the river.Nice pictures! That's my daughter in the pink waders.. She has a pink rod and reel to match. Her mom made the hat for her.. Did you get any pictures of the fight that took place that day.. Lol. The town pool does get crazy!
Please let me know where you bought those waders...would love to get a pair for my granddaughter!
I would like to order one of those hats for her, that your wife made too!

I should have posted this in the L O tributary forum...don't know how to move it there.

I don't fish for the salmon once they enter the river, but do enjoy watching the show, and listening to the banter at the town pool. They have their own language ;sayings, adjectives, and instructions, to keep other people from casting over the line of someone fighting a fish. Very entertaining.
Here are some of the words and phrases I heard over and over at the town pool when someone hooked up.
Fish On! - Fish Off - FIIIISH !- Going up !- Waaay up! going across!- In the middle - along the wall!- under the bridge!- Right in the mouth! - Screamer !- Going Down !- Waaay Down!- No helpers !- First Timer, Give him room!- Jumper!- Tail Hook - Belly hook- Good hook !- NET !- Yell louder, never heard you - Lots of cursing too !
then in the middle of all the madness,I spot this cute little girl who definitely gets the best waders and hat award
saw this chalk message on a rock downstream a ways near the staircase

Spoke with a DSR employee an hour or so ago. He told me there were DEC and other Biologists down on the lower river (DSR)today collecting eggs from (wild ?) kings that were spawning naturally in the lower river. The biologists mentioned they were looking for vitamin B / thiamine difficiancies and other things in these fresh eggs and the adult spawning kings too.
He also witnessed several large ,dying whirling steelhead for the first time this season.

Thanks Joe Esox, Kevin J L and all you LOU guy's.Nice fish! Spent the last couple days trolling up there. Only muskie was a small one but the pike were big and hungry. The muskie population is so fragile there and the guys on this site are just trying to look out for them and educate on safe handling/release practices. I think there are always things we can change/improve no matter how experienced we are. I bet you will remember that fish/experience for the rest of your life! There is nothing like the rush you feel when you know a giant is on the end of your line...and in the St. Lawrence... there is something magical about that river to me. This is what makes muskie fishing so special and makes the guys that hunt them so crazy about protecting the species. Thanks for sharing choo choo and keep it up!

Joe Esox,I am sure I will remember that muskie for the rest of my life as you said. Not many fishing trips in our fishing lives can compare to a fishing trip, when you hook, fight, land and release a fish of that size. It was a Very special feeling holding her tail in the water, feeling her gaining her strength so quickly, and then pull so hard and swim away, free once again.
Awesome fish....Beautiful river.....amazing experience and thrill.

There have been a few others taken and released in the last 2 weeks...2 which were an hour after dark..wink winkFirst SLR muskie post ive seen this fall.... I was starting to get worried, lol.

Great fish!!
Please don't take me wrong but I am concerned about muskies being released safely with as little trauma as possible. Here are some improvements that can be made over what was done. 1) Larger coated net with tighter and thicker mesh to help keep from damaging the fins (you can see in the picture the net is torn through the tail fin). 2) Always use a high quality steel leader or very heavy fluorocarbon leader and check it often for damage. 3) Keep the fish in the water while removing or cutting hooks if possible. With some larger boats it may not be possible but everything you can do to minimize time out of water or anything that will rub slime off the fish will reduce the chance of delayed mortality. Wet any surface the fish will come in contact with. If you can, lift the fish out of the net while it is in the water instead of lifting the fish out of the water with the net.
Again, please don't take this wrong.
Hey no problem muskiedreams, I love and respect these muskies and so does my friend Bruce. The musky's well being is THE most important thing and we do everything possible to make sure we have a quick release with as little damage and trauma as possible. Maybe a tighter mesh net would be better, but it is a very large high quality net with a 42" long hoop opening. We use steel leaders for all most all of the lures but there are a few that he likes to use heavy mono instead of the steel/wire leaders. There was no way we were going to lift that musky out of the water without it in the net due to the size of the fish along with the high sides on the boat and transom, especially in the chop.
Thanks for all the nice comments from you guy's and well intentioned criticism. It was a great thrill for me, and Bruce was real happy too. He and his wife Anne have been catching and carefully releasing these awesome fish for over 30 years on the St. Lawrence, And I am very lucky to have them as fiends and musky teachers.
No musky magic today, trolled long and hard with only 1 slam / release /nobody home to show for it.But the thrill of yesterdays fish of a lifetime for me made todays skunk easy to take....besides it was a beautiful day out there weatherwise. We're gonna try again next week, can't wait.
Good luck to all you guy's and I hope you all can land a long, giant, heavy musky sometime...quite a thrill.A fish I will never top....but will try !!

I am still shaking from the "Fish Thrill" of my lifetime today. I fished with my musky guru friend Bruce aboard his penn yan "Bear Necessity" today on the St. Lawrence. We were covering lot's of water searching and occasionally clearing lines of weeds and some fleas when we got an absolute violent ,screaming hit that nearly tore the rod holder off the boat. I grabbed the rod that was being kept from going overboard by a safety tether....and it was game on. The Beast surfaced and thrashed out about 150 feet and it took my breath away and scared me to death at the same time. I tried to get Bruce to take the rod and fight the fish because I was afraid of losing it! He said "no way" Ive got to clear lines and steer the boat. Well she sounded and thrashed around, took me a long while to get her close then panic set in again, no wire leader on that particular lure and the lure was buried out of sight in the musky's mouth ! She jumped, cleared the water and sounded again... and I thought it was all over but got lucky and was able work her back and steer her to the net !Bruce could not lift her into the boat(neither could I)...the 2 of us had to lift her!
Here's a pic from my cell phone
We did have a little time removing and cutting out the hooks, but we were able to get her back in the water and she revived and released really well...awesome day, awesome fight, and awesome sight watching her swim off and out of sight towards the bottom. I will never forget that fish...and I'm sure I will never top her.

Thanks Gambler...easily a PB by over 5 lbs. for me.
How old would a Lake O laker that size be ?
-
I got into some nice suspended lakers this summer while salmon fishing down 70 over 140 fow...I was wondering if some of you guy's could estimate the weight and age of this fish. I did not weigh it, I was working fast to get it back in the water for a quick release....but got the length at just over 36 inches. Any estimates?
