  1. OK ......I've watched this thread since first posted. Have also noted how well and easily pp39 can get under folk's skin in the past. I just think he's one of those guys that has always been that way......contagiously annoying; sort of like Pigpen in Charlie Brown, with always some cloud of dust around him. This exact type of response has been generated by pp39 in past years in LOU. Wise up. I know there is a lot of angst in the world (and always has been). But if competition was won fair and square as deemed by the judges and witnesses (and yes there can always be cheating and rule bending attempted), winners need not get bent out of shape because of some boo bird. You won or placed and, like a foul called in a basketball game, rightly or wrongly, if the ref called it, no matter how much you may protest or whine, the call will not be reversed! ......BTW, r y'all (southern drawl.....) sure he's not from Alabama... NY......?  :P   .....Yeah, pokepole39 does know how to "get something going"....... :dull:

  2. Buy Daredevils. One of the best and oldest (100+ years) lures made in the U.S. Out of Dearborn Michigan, I can attest to their effectiveness, particularly with members of the pike family. This is one of the originals....... who have not gone overseas for cheaper production...................  They also make Evil Eye spoons......I'm just sayin'.............. :handshake::mmm:

  3. BSmaster....The Merrimac... Huh! I haven't fished that sine I was a kid growing up in Boston....Just haphazardly chucking in some old rubber baits without really knowing what I was doing. Wasn't even "into" fishing then, and only spent maybe a half hour there each of twice while on the way up for day/wknd trips to N.H.,Vt or Maine. For blues and striper eating, my nod goes to bluefish, but I'll take striper if I did not have a choice.....!

  4. Makes me remember my "impervious to most stuff" days. At least these guys are fishing, not killing other people for whatever reason! I do love the idea of regularly hooking up with and catching multiple species of game fish and sharks and releasing them to go again.....from shore!. I'd have to keep one of those tunas or mackerels for the fridge..... :)

  5. All the time. That's why the jumbos are more like "gamefish" than "panfish".....At least they think so; they are big enough in their own heads. Have caught small perch (not jumbos) on the Big O with lures bigger than the perch. Sometimes even baby salmon 4 inches long. Talk about eyes bigger than stomachs! :shake:

  6. Minion...Just saw this posting.....Looks like he's been hitting the all u can eat places.!....Back 30 seasons ago and such seems there were more of those football browns being caught.....and regularly. Glad to see some are still able to over eat. Must be the gobies. Xellent fish!!.....BTW, that one might need a visit or two to the fish doctor.... :P

  7. Whew!.... Good thing u were able to get the fish before motor died! And good thanx to good friends (Wayne) who will come out for yas, too..... :whew:

  8. Pikefreak. Don't have to apologize for hitting the bass anywhere in New York State as they are abundant almost everywhere. And, as devoknevo said, the regulations back that up. Personally I love to pick up those bass in the early spring, probably a little before they r nesting. They seem to be big suckers for crankbaits and stickbaits and swimbaits and.....well......baits in general! Anything that moves! Ever go to Sodus in early may or late April after ice out and weather can still be a challenge? Beauteous largemouths love hitting sunfish or perch colored fatraps retrieved about 6-8 ft down around the islands. Then u can move to bays outside of creeks and nail more largemouths and northerns on flatraps. All catch and release, all easy, and all fun! And yeah Tg8. Those days around Hedges in May were seriously crazy with the smallies!!!!. Give em a chance. As native to the lake, they will probably re-establish there like that again. Hopefully...... :)

  9. Ok. lower Niagra.....Yeah there are some hawg smallies there. Actually there could be big ones anywhere. Any of the fingers hold big ones. The two biggest smallies I've ever caught were north of 5.5 lbs....on the same scale. One was at Chautauqua on the east side of the north part at Dewittville Bay on an oversized organge-ish Rapala shad rap in about 8 fow. The other was at the north end of Honeoye a little east of the Honeoye creek outlet about 300yards from shore in weedy and muddy water due to strong southerly winds on a 4 inch yellow grub tail on a plain 1/4oz. jig. And the biggest I've had on (but broke off after seeing it right under my boat) had to be well over 6lbs. And that was on the west side of the east fork of Kueka a little south of Kueka College on a cheap blue 6 inch plastic worm in clear water about 5 ft from shore at the edge of a drop off into about 90 to 100 fow......You're right. That photo does not do that fish the justice. Great catch...!

  10. WHHooooooowwweeeee!!! They've got schools of jumbos like that in Seneca.....And U certainly know how to get 'em Steve! I'm thinking possible world records somewhere in the fingers, and maybe most likely Seneca. NNniiiiccee!

  11. Bowzee.....Nnnniiiicce! What....about maybe 3.5-4lbs.? Judging from the rocks in the background, I'd guess somewhere along the shore of Ontario or one of it's better tributaries......or bays...

  12. R we talking egg strippers or leg strippers... :P ....? Either way, I'm absolutely with no more different "top predator" fish in Ontario. Those bigheads and silvers (due to money-making political-industrial matters) r threatening. Lets keep what we have in balance, keep working on the lakers, atlantics, bows, browns and other intro'd pacific salmonids, both bass family members, walleyes, esocidae, "odd fish" varieties, and all the panfish (including the striper's cousins the white bass and white perch, which are both in the watershed). If U want stripers, a great fish, just go a little bit east or south and get all U want. Why do we need to have everything everywhere? Lord knows we are mobile enough and have wonderful variety in our region as it stands. Maybe wipers would work better instead of the tigers in Conesus for control, but the Big O....keep it clean and let it go.  8)

  13. Pikefreak.....Dude.....That one sheepie is HHHUUUGAE!! Great fight I imagine (maybe better than the tried and true bucketmouths), eh? And Tg8....devoknevo is right about the regs. Bass are pretty hardy especially the largemouths. But, particularly in light of some of the downturn in recent years of the southshore Big O smallmouth fishing, until a for sure true reason for the downswing is realized, it could be said taking it easy might be cool. It has been thought that the multitudes of round gobies may contribute to it because they can sweep in and gobble a bunch of smallie eggs or fry while guardian males are fighting some fisherman's offering until it gets back down there after release. Would take a lot of scuba and/or camera visual and count (counting nests eggs,fry,gobies......whew!) studies to verify that. You know, for other areas, I would believe no harm comes to bass populations normally. But it certainly does not hurt if you wish to leave 'em alone while they're trying to keep themselves going. Don't believe it is a problem in most waters with largemouths. And do appreciate and understand your respect for the bass.....

  14. hermit.....Just saw this. Looks like something folks who think mathematically would pass their time with (nerdy brilliance). I tend to be a "pictures" guy (duh). But your graph shows some nice pictures (nerdly duh!). What kills me is that, what....17.5lb brown caught in '98! Any "photo" pics anywhere of that baby....?

  15. That's good. Anyone hear of current DEC plans for Cayuga.....Haven't been there for about 4 years but have been hearing, reading and u-tubing of the crazy numbers there....Other than rants, any real news on that scene.....?       BTW, I have heard the species is a native to the nearby region......

  16. Sk8man...Absolutely so with surrounding ANY food completely with water, if you are going to freeze something for an indeterminate amount of time. And that can sometimes be way more than a couple of months. It's because of frost free (dry) refrigeration. The old timey freezers that had to be cleared of ice buildup (and the surrounding refrigerator itself) kept frozen stuff moist. Do not rely on just freezer wrap or plastic layers, even if done vacuum style....the ice is practically fool proof for insulating from dryness......And remember the smaller the items, the easier to freezer burn.

  17. SSSsswwwwweeeeeeet! Nice deal, man!  I've watched big bass like that (and smaller) come out from under the docks in the fingerlakes. Particularly at the state launch in Woodville at the south end of Canandaigua lake in the middle of the night under the light of the nearby lamp. Spooked by my walking onto the steel dock. A 7.5lber is really nice, with that big ole mouth you can drive a truck into!!  :P
