  1. Would the Scotty Striker rod holders work?  They say they were designed for Halibut, Muskie, and Sturgeon.  Those are all pretty big fish.  I also saw a guy with a Lund who had Down-east rod holders for dipsies.  He liked them because you just pick the rod right up from the rod holder.

  2. I like the rails, but if you are fishing alone, you should get one of those remote kill switches in case you some how fall overboard.  Maybe I am over cautious, but crazier things have happened.  You could also probably tie a string to your kill switch and tie it to your belt.

  3. Lake Superior has more surface area exposed so it freezes over.  The smaller surface area of Lake Ontario you would think would cause it to freeze over, but the heat (even if it is in the 30's or 40's) caused by the deep water is more focused on the smaller opening.  Basically the deeper water keeps its heat because it has less surface area exposed.

Then again I could be wrong.

  4. Some things to consider:  Do you plan on keeping the boat for the next 10 years?  If your answer is yes you may want to save up and buy something new next year.  You can always use a trolling sock to decrease your speed.  Do you winterize your outboard and change the 4-stroke oil yourself or do you have it done by someone who services Yamaha?  If you have it done by someone else then you may want a Yamaha so it can all get done at once.  I believe the rule still applies of having the cavitation plate lined up with the bottom of the boat.

  5. Go spend a day at BassPro and look at all the equipment.  Look carefully at the outboards, rodholders, seat bases, seats, and they have Tracker boats (I have a 18 foot Lund, but you'll see the advantages of rod lockers & livewells).

Next decide what kind of used boat you want.  14 footers are nice but 16 footers offer much more room.  You may want to take an entirely different route.  You see a lot of old starcraft and other aluminum boats from the 1950's and 1960's that are closed bow on craigslist.  If you are handy, they make ideal boats to modify into mini bass, walleye, or duck boats.  I have a 15 footer that I tow and leave the Lund in a hoist at a cottage.  Someone modified mine so that two people can fish comfortably with a wood floor and it has two seats on pedestals (not bench seats),  You can find more info at tinboats.net on how to do this, but remember the more weight in the boat a 15 hp may not get you as fast as you like.

You will want a fishfinder with GPS.  You may want a navionics chip for the GPS.  Also you will want a gas motor (at least 9.9) and a trolling motor with a deep cycle marine battery.  Four rodholders for tolling.  I prefer inline planers (and this can be used for Spring Browns).  Don't forget a paddle or a good set of oars.

  6. The Genesee River has a large population of Walleyes throughout May.You can fish all night off the Summerville pier or troll for them.  People catch them by the dozens in all weather conditions.  Just remember the walleyes in the Genesee River taste like how the river smells.

Yes I have caught walleyes in Sodus in May and June, but there are more in other places.

I have also heard that after May goes by that two large schools of walleyes set up in Lake Ontario in front of Rochester.  The die hard wallleye anglers out there are targeting them.  Virtually everyone who is looking at their boats just assume that they are salmon fishing.

  7. Make sure you check out tinboats.net.   Its covers a lot of mods people make to aluminum boats.  I have an old boat from the 1950's that was originally closed bow that was made into an open bow for duck hunting by a previous owner.  Its not the best idea for the middle of Lake Ontario, but its great for fishing the bays and Finger Lakes with pedestal seats.

  8. I have a Fish Hawk 520 Digital Depth Counter that looks like it should be in a museum.  I'm thinking of upgrading to a Smart Troll system so I can keep track of all the presentations I put out.  How well does this work?  Are there any issues from anyone who has used it?  I've also looked at Pro Troll and the Fish Hawk X-4, but I think the Smart Troll is more versatile.  If I am wrong, will someone please let me know before I but it sometime this winter.

  9. Has anyone read the law?  People under 18 have to take the boating course.  Then there is the strange provision that when someone now purchases a boat they have 90 days to take the course if they have not already.  My favorite part of the law is that if you rent a boat you do not need to take the course.

Stick it to everyone who wants to buy a boat, but if you rent you do not need it.
