May not be applicable for you, but navionics has a great/cheap map app for android devices that I use a lot. My guess is you're looking for paper but it may be of value for folks with androids. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

We've run a Merc 25 kicker on the back of an 22' aluminum center console for a couple decades and it works just fine. Probably oversized but we had the 25 on hand back when the boat was purchased so that's what went on. It has served to bring the boat in on one occasion. 9.9 might be the right size, but the 25 works fine for us.

Even your handheld would work many many times better with a quality marine antenna. Still not the power output of a 25 watt radio, but you'll get a lot of the way to the performance of a full size radio with a new antenna. Of course your marine radio might be your lifeline, so a full power radio is good insurance (with a good antenna). I mounted a Standard Horizon in the dash and happy so far.
