  1. Anyone know if anything is going on at Onanda Park on Canandaigua?

Hi guys! It's looking like it will be a nice weekend, and I'm wondering if there's any action down at Onanda Park on Canandaigua. No boat or kayaks for us yet this season, but we were thinking of doing some shore fishing this weekend from their pier that gets in to some fairly deep water. We're hoping to get lucky and maybe hit some trout in shallow and if not maybe just some perch. Any thoughts or ideas? Thank you for your help!

  2. If you want to fish Seneca , Samson State park , Lodi State park all have water access timing for fish in close to shore is iffy but they do come in casting distance.

On Cayuga Tunkanhock Falls (sp?) has very good access right to deep water also.................

Thank you, Erabbit, that's great to know too! I've honestly never been fishing on Seneca, so maybe we'll give that a try as well.

We appreciate the info, thanks for the help!

  3.

No trout on the pier, very small panfish.

'bows were slim pickins it did happen but quite a bit of panfish, bass, and some pickerel.

Hey guys, thank you very much for the info! That's exactly the kind of info I was hoping to learn. Any ideas where else my wife and I might try this time of year to cast to some trout? We'd greatly appreciate any advice you can offer to us.

Thank you very much for your help!

  4. there use to be access off the city pier at the end of rt. 332 use to fish there quite a bit in college about 12 or 15 years ago. may have changed. use to murder the smelt down there too when we hit it rite!!

    Hi, insufishent!

Thank you for the advice. I know there is still a park there, but can I ask what you used to be able to catch from that spot? Are there trout in close early in the season?

Thanks again, we very much appreciate the help!

  5. I was giving advice on the subject at hand. Not an insult or judgement. That lake has limited access like stated above. Which is why I presume no body wanted to include that there is or may be a public access outside of the ones your stating. I gave my two cents. Clearly it was tossed in the lake.

    Stay safe,

    Nick

And as stated before, I am not a lurker. 'nuff said.

  6. You could have saved yourself some headaches by just going with my original request to talk ion the phone in the first place. The reason I did so is I am lying in bed with a back injury and can't sit up for long periods of time typing right now....and am standing while typing at the moment.....and given your response above I think it best that you do check things out yourself...... and yes it is deep water right from shore at Onanda.

Thank you, I very much appreciate the info about Onanda Park; that's really all I was asking for. And though I'm sorry to hear about your injuries, I do not do telephones for my own reasons, so that's why I declined your offer to speak with me. I would welcome any and all input anyone has by posting it here here, by email, or by PM, but I'd prefer to stay off the telephones, thanks ;) I wish you well, and hope you will be back out fishing soon.

Thanks very much for your help!

  7. Well, I'm certainly no lurker, I've been a member since 2010, and would have expected a bit more help from fellow LOU members. I find it hard to believe that members here routinely post about their fishing trips, conditions, places they fish, tackle/techniques they use, and if they were successful or not for all over the Great Lakes and surrounding areas, but I'm met with resistance for asking about PUBLIC fishing opportunities because right now our boat is in storage. I've also read plenty of posts from others asking about ice or water conditions, or if a boat launch is open yet, but I guess asking about the conditions at public places is just too invasive for this tight-knit group. I really just wanted to know if it's deep water out at Onanda Park, but I can take a ride out there my self this afternoon and check it out in person.

    Thanks again for the replies.

  8. Also, what about the park at the very north end of the lake in Canandaigua? Can you catch early season trout from there? Really what I'm looking for is something like the public pier up at Charlotte in Rochester where you can cast spoons and spinners to early season trout and salmon. Does something like that exist on Canandaigua?

    Thanks a lot!

  9. Thanks guys, but I'm not asking for detailed info on anyone's hot spot, I'm asking only for public access places, and what they might be like if we decide to try them. Information about such places should be readily available to encourage more people to get out there, and in no way infringes on the "real" fishing from boats or private land. The Naples Creek area was just one location we were asking about (and really I was just asking about the season dates there), but we're open to other public spots on the lake, such as Onanda Park. If anyone has any information about Onanda Park, or any other places we should consider, we'd very much appreciate your help.

    Thanks again!

  10. Just about 99.9 % of Canandaigua shore is private and the majority of that owned by the mega rich. You got the south end west side launch I see folks fish from their. You would need ice fishing gear now. Naples creek south end April 1st for Bows.

Hi, Hookedup! Thanks for the reply. We did realize that a lot of the lake is privately owned. I also knew about the boat launch at Woodville, but is there a pier or anyplace to fish there? Also, would you know anything about a pier or dock at Onanda Park? A friend of mine told me that's a good spot to try, but I don't know anything about it.

And April 1st down at Naples creek; got it, thanks!

  11. Hey guys! My wife and I recently moved to Farmington, and we've got cabin fever ;). Although we have a 16' boat, it's currently in storage, and so we're relegated to shore fishing at this time. We were wondering if someone here could recommend any spots on Canandaigua Lake that are open to the public for shore fishing. I think things are still pretty icy around the lake right now, but we're hoping the warmer weather is coming soon, and want to have an idea where to try at ice out. Does any one have any ideas? I've heard that Onanda Park has a public fishing pier that lets you cast into fairly deep water, but I've never been there personally. Is that a decent spot to try? Any where else we should be looking? I Should mention that we're really hoping to be able to reach some early season trout that might be in close, we'd like to be able to cast to them with spoons or spinners if that's possible. If not, we would also be happy catching perch or almost anything else that might be close to shore and would be legal to fish for, except for sunfish, bluegills, and rock bass; we'll fool for those little guys at the end of my mother-in-law's dock on Keuka when the weather is better, and there's a cold adult beverage in hand ;)

Additionally, I've always heard about a Spring trout run in/around Naples at the southern end of the lake. Can anyone tell me more about this? Is this open season now, or is this for after April first? Is there decent public shore access, and what techniques would work for this area?

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the help!

  12. Hey guys!

Wow, thanks for the great suggestions! We think that northern park on Canadaigua is a waist of time too because it's so shallow and busy with traffic, but it sounds like that Ononda Park would be a good spot to try. We've never been there, so we want to ask if it's definitely open to the public for shore fishing? And what is typically the best time of day to try for trout?

I have been reading reports of Keuka all week. To be honest, we're more familiar with Keuka, but it's a longer drive for us. However, it does sound like there's small lakers just waiting to be caught down there. Would our chances be better making the drive to Keuka rather than Canandaigua?

    Thanks again!

  13. Hey guys!

Thanks for all the advice! My wife and I tried off the pier near Irondequoit Bay this morning. We were there at the crack of dawn, and fish about three hours with no luck. There were two younger guys there this morning who said the week had been good, and that they caught many brown trout from that pier. Maybe we'll get a chance to try some of the other suggested locations.

For now, can anyone just tell us if we're too early for Spring trout from shore, or too late because of the warmer weather? I would think the lake is still at fairly normal temps for the season, but I'd just like some reassurance that we have a chance out there.

Thanks so much for all the help!

  14. You could also try Irondequoit Bay channel lakeside or go out to Webster park. Toss some heavy spoons that give you some distance such as lil cleo's, Krockadiles etc. (orange, silver, occasionally a blue)

    Good luck,

    Tom B.

    (LongLine)

Awesome! Thank you so much for your prompt reply! So then you'd say there's probably some trout or salmon around shallow enough that we could try to cast to the them from shore? Yes, we have fairly stout spinning gear, and hefty Little Cleo's and plenty of other trout spoons. Is the morning usually the best time to try?

Thanks again, we really appreciate the advice!

  15. Hi guys!

I'm hoping some of you can help point a couple of newbies in the right direction, please. My wife and I are currently relegated to shore fishing only, and we are wondering if anyone can recommend a place we could try to cast from shore in or around the Rochester area. I am familiar with the one pier in Charlotte, I think it is - Near Shamrock Jack's and the amusement park. We are thinking of trying that tomorrow AM, and maybe again Sunday. Does anyone think we have a chance at casting to trout or salmon from that pier this weekend? Could you suggest any other nearby place we could try, and what lures/spoons/bait you might try for trout/salmon. If trout or salmon from shore is completely out of the questions, is there anything besides perch to be found near shore this time of year?

Thanks very much for your ides and suggestions!

  16. Hi guys!

With so much nice weather the last couple of weeks, my wife and I got the urge to do some fishing, and we drove the 30 miles or so to the public pier area at the north shore of Canandaigua lake this evening. It was a beautiful evening for mid-March, and we spent a couple hours casting Little Cleo's and Swedish Pimple-looking spoons into the very, very clear and shallow water at the park. Unfortunately, we didn't have a single hit, but in the time that we were there we saw three positively trout-like fish swim right by us, totally uninterested in our spoons, of course. That spot is VERY busy with cars and foot traffic other than fisherman, which I don't think was helping.

    So, my questions are:

Does anyone think we are wasting our time trying to cast spoons for trout/salmon from that public pier at this time?

Is there any other public spot on Canandaigua, Keuka, or any other nearby lake that would offer us a chance at trout from shore?

Can anyone suggest the best time of day to try, and what spoons/lures/bait would you suggest?

Thank you very much for any thoughts or input!

  17. You should use your remote control and go as low as you can without shutting off the engine. This is to make sure that your idle is at the lowest possible point to start with. After you have set the idle with the engine in neutral you want to go for a ride and finalize the adjustment while the engine is under a load. That way you fine tune the whole thing

As always, thanks for your time and help! I think I have the idea, and if nothing else my repair manual is *supposed* to be here Monday. I'm anxious to run the motor under load, so I am going to try and get it to the water tomorrow (Friday), if I can.

I do have one more question for now: There is a sticker on the motor's air intake that says to adjust the idle from the remote control. Where do I find this adjustment? Do I need to take the cover plate off the remote control? The only other adjust I find at the remote is the throttle friction, which is different.

Oh, I guess two more questions; do I need to adjust the throttle linkage, and if so, how?

Thanks a lot, rolmops, your help has been invaluable!

  18. Your lower unit takes special oil and not the regular lower unit oil. This is because you have an electric shift system that requires slightly different oil,or it will simply not shift.

That would be: OMC Premium Blend or the equivalent Type C fluid.

Thank you, L&M, that is what the mechanic used in the lower unit this Spring, and what I will continue to use in the future. I understand this "selectric" shift can be problematic and potentially expensive to fix. I'm sure it's best to keep running the good gear oil in the hopes of minimising any problems.

    Thanks again for your help!

  19. if possible ask for a sea trial. I had carbs rebulilt and still had had the same problem even after chainging out all the old fuel lines, 800 billls later I was out after trying to remide the problrem. Now i own an IO. I don't think its unreasonable to ask to to have the mechanic that repaired it to run an on open water test as opposed to in a tank! trial tanks are not open water

    my thoughts

    ted

Great thought, dcso, but unfortunately I'm the "mechanic" that rebuilt the carbs ;) I think I'm going to try and get it in the water tomorrow (Friday) afternoon or evening. Hopefully I can get the carbs tuned and going without much trouble.

Thanks for your input, I definitely appreciate the help!

  20. ...Now lower the RPMs as much as you can without killing the engine.

What do you mean by this? Lower the RPM's by pulling the throttle back, or is there some other adjustment I make on the motor or remote control?

I think I'm going to try and get it close in a large garbage pail, and if that works I can try to bring it to the water this weekend.

Thank you very much for your time, I really appreciate it!
