I am looking a purchasing a rig... was wondering if anyone uses another reel other than a penn 309.. has anyone has success with a line counter reel??

My dad has an old shakespear rod and reel with copper wire and 30lbs test line. Im looking for a new rod and reel setup for thermocline fishing.. any ideas for reels with line counters. Thanks for the ideas guys
