My Dad lives at Bird Bay in Venice. I go down there once in a while & enjoy the fishing there. If I were you the first place I would try is the North Jetty . The Sheephead should be in Big time then . The Best way I have found to fish for them is live shrimp . I use a 9' pier spin rod . 20 # pwer pro & 20 # Vanish leader . Size 4 hook ,a good size shot & wtd Popping cork.4-6' down & let it drift W / tidal current by rocks. You can see the schools if water is clear. They get prettty big & are fun to catch. Mixed in are snapper, snook , redfish , lady fishCrevale Jacks, Pompano & Spannish mackrel ,that will cut you off. Worst part are the barrnacles rock that if you get snaged up , Kiss it good by. You need the big rod to haul fish over the rocks. Their mouths are supper hard so bring pliers & xtra hooks.
I also like to jig w/ a 1/4 -1/2 oz white buctail or Pompano Jig. a piece of shrimp. 7 ' med action spin 10# poer pro & 20 # floro leader. I do that on the South Jetty Ocean side when tide is going out . Have Fun.
Thanks Has Been. Some good info. I have a lot of things to ck out when I go down but want to get some fishing in. When you say the North Jetty is this shore fishing or pier ? Sounds like a lot of fun ! Can't wait to get down there. Thanks Dave

You can use navionics app on your smart phone as a back-up and a tablet as long as it has GPS built into it. I just got a NEXUS 7 and plan on that as my back-up or just to mark the way points of the fish to steer thru a hot spot.

My 60lb setup is a 400ft Penn 345 on a 7ft custom fish doctor copper rod. I will probably change it over to an Okuma Solterra this year. Those are the best long copper reels on the market. The power is unbelievable.
What model Solterra level wind or the high speed verison ? Thanks Dave

Hi Brian, What was your chute rod setup ? Rod,reel, and length of 60lb ?It works fantastic. Shines in shoot rod application at least for me. Reeling in less is a big advantage.
In the interest of full disclosure I am on the Pro Staff.
Brian
Thanks Dave

Capt. Jimmy are you going with 12 lb test line with this ?The best bands we have found are the number 19 from staples. What we do is wrap the band around the line several times and then insert both loops of the band into the blacks and snap it shut. Done this way, the band will not slip and the rod tips can be cranked right down to the water. We set the blacks tight enough so that the band breaks and the blacks stays closed.. The black's setting by the way, is left on the setting that we use when running attractors. When the band breaks, it just falls off of the fishing line. Having the rubber band wrapped around the line instead of half hitched, does not affect the integrity of the line.
Using the rubber bands we can see small fish bites, but it takes a bit to break the band which insures a good hookset on mature fish.. The bands can also be broken manually if needed, just pull the rod by jerking up and breaking the band.
We have been doing it this way for years. It allows us to get away with using lite line for spoons which we feel generates more bites, especially on those tough days when the temps are up and the water's blue.

Okuma Catalina with a Blue Diamond rod or a Heartland. Would go with 19 Strand Lo-Vis Smoke Wire over the 7 Strand IMO. Dave

I agree with Scobar. Even the sit down turkey lunch was great. Dan and Dave are a class act !
