  1. I have a lowrance 10" screen maybe 5 year old model and the sonar is great - surface temp sucks - gps map of land great - contours of seneca lake bottom is terrible and the pre-loaded lake contours can be off as much as 100 feet - someone generated the lake contours in an office 1000 miles from the lake - no idea of the true contour of the lake - maybe there is a chip or card that is more on the money but out of the box with pre-load program, I'm disappointed.

  2. Like Nick said - "REMAIN CALM - NERIOUS OPERATORS PANIC" The best advise is as slow as possible - out boards at like IO's - very easy to dock - your brake is reverse - when is reverse, spin the wheel in the oposite direction to pull your back to the dock and when going forward spin the wheel the opposite direction to push it toward the dock - but the key is dead slow and under control - wind will always be an issue and you have to adjust eveything for the wind strength - not fun - but if you do EVERYTHING as slow as possible you will always be safer than trying to go in too fast - RAMMING SPEED DOES DAMAGE. The heavier boats carry the speed - get control well before making any manuvers - even stop the boat - then start your turns and line up slowly - then go straight - then disingauge or even go reverse but do everything slow speed.

good luck and with time you'll get it

  3. Ran a 4 hour charter from 6 till 10 Did 5 for 6 (1) 5 lb brown (1) 10 lb laker (2) small LLS released (1) small rainbow released. Saw lightning to the north - seemed a ways off but the charter was a 4 hour trip so I headed in on time - boy that was one of the best decisions I made - I was docked up and cleaning fish when out hell broke out - one of the wickest micro bursts I've seen in a while - Of course there were a few clowns headed out - they got a quick lession from mother nature - 2 kayaks sank in the channel - they swam to the break wall - a pontoon boat in the channel canvas got riped down and a fly bridge boat was out of control off my stern and barely grabbed the marina gas dock as they passed it side ways. I'm never ceased to be amazed by peoples decisions on the water!!!!!!!!!! Steve Wonder could have see that wall cloud coming from the north, but they still go out!!!!!!!! Me and my mate did see a horizontal funnel to the east just before the storm hit - Pretty power storm yesterday.

By the way 4 of the fish were in tight 50 feet down (on down riggers) caught on NK 4d watermelon no seeds - The big laker was 50 feet down on watermelon NK 4d no seeds.

I ran 20 % of the spoons on my boat and nothing else fired - some fleas but not bad - also some weeds but not bad either

Every thing was on the west side by the tiki bar and just north of salt mine - laker was up by rock stream and out deeper.

    That's all folks!!!

  4. I am sure it wasn't fishing people - just some low life punk - but maybe someone on this site saw something so I could INTRODUCE myself to the PUNK. I have barked at a few clowns that don't slow down till past the bridge - some are locals from other marinas and some that launch at the public site and few have got lippy or threw the finger and of course I invited them to the dock for a LITTLE MEETING BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE BALLS. I don't think the marina has cameras and wally world is too far away. Thanks, guys, for the advise I just needed to vent and just maybe some punk will brag and it will get back to me - I'm pretty hot right now.

Nick, if I can get a team together for your toury , when would you need the entry fee?

Could have booked two charters today for this week but could not get time off from work -- grrr!!!

  5. I'd like to thank the spineless coward that tore down my business sign from the Glen Harbor Marina chain link fence - you may not visit this site but just in case you do, you are a coward. By the way it will be repair and up in 2 days.

  6. Ran a father/son charter with my son mating - nice guys - Fishing was SLOWWWWW - 4 LLS - 1=a new record for me - the smallest salmon I have ever fair hooked in 40 years of fishing - size= the nk 40 spoon it hit - I beleive it was stock earlier that morning!!!!!! 2=4lb 1=dink 1=sub dink (new catagory) all down riggers 25 to 60FT over 150 at mouth only - nk 40 (like nk 28 but shorter and formed more) color = water melon no seeds (black dots) only spoon that work.period. 4 hour trip. temp was all messed up - kept changing every where I went - ran probe for temp all day at lures - wow good luck - wind was stiff.

  7. Ran a 2 person charter . Nice couple . Ran north up from the Glen - popped a LLS about 630 am by the opening - another by the tiki and another north of the salt mine. Hooked a another just south of Genora. Returned south and picked up 2 more south of the mine - fished west side only - 4 hour trip - all LLS were caught on spoons - 4 on downriggers 30 ft to 70 ft in tight about 80- 200 FOW - 2 on lead core out 6 colors. Lures were nk 28 water melon, stinger and DW in a black with dark green center on silver with white ladderbacks and DW silver aldwafe - coppers nevered fired - lead core ran on planer boards. People Kept 3 for the grill tonite at their campsite - between 3-4 lbs - rest released because of size.

  8. Jonboy

Yeah, I saw ya couple of times - was working a charter - If you tried to call me on the radio I'm sorry - was not on - power cable was accidently pulled - Never noticed it till my mate said something towards end of trip. Leadcore out 6-8 colors, heavy weight copper @ 200 ft and downriggers @ 45 and 60 all fired with above mentioned spoons.

  9. Fished for 4 hrs - boated 6 LLS - NK-28 silver with black and green, stingers blue dolpin and green gator and red on copper. 3 keepers - 3 dinks In tight between hotel and salt mine - lots of fish and bait early - by 10 am they were gone. that's all folks!!!

  10. I have seen problems with pancake weight years ago and switch to the 12 lb fish type - the pancake type can wander alot and are affected by the currents below and in turns they tend to float to the outsides and then return rather quickly and have crossed.

As far as blacks, you must take care when first lowering the weight so they don't twist around the steel cable and how the blacks are installed can be an issue - they need to float loosely on the steel cable - if cripped on the steel cable place a steel or plastic ball on each side of the crip so the black can float - the crip can actually get jammed into the black preventing it to swivel properly. Hope this helps ya.

  11. I beleive "OLD SCHOOL" IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT, mr. poke. Because old school is a record player with copper and mutiple sutton spoons which you pull now and then to increase the lure action - but I'm sure that was before your time. Flat lines and planar boards are not old school - just one of the ways we all still use.

As one of those "pros charter captains" I found your report amusing but also insulting, but that was your intention anyways. I'm sure some of the "stories" here are a bit "padded" but there is alot of good info here too. As charter captains we are ALWAYS looking for the trophy fish but the "dinks" are also at the same locations too - If you have a "dink" separator for sale please sell me one.

With this all said congrats on your winning fish and added money to our community. Please come back, spend more money, and please add your postings sooner so all of us so called "pros" know where the big ones are.

  12. Got to the boat before 6am to rig for the 1st charter of the season - to make a long story short they were a no show - grrrr - So me and the first mate finished installing the new planer board rigs and support beam - While we were finishing up the repairs we watch this guy in a small aluminium boat flat line C. creek he hooked a fish under the bridge and being by himself he couldn't steer - he bounced off half the docks and boats in the area and when he was going to hit my swim platform I gave him alittle push to get him out to open water in the middle of the channel ( which he thank me for) the fish jump. He had his hands full but managed to net the fish after about 10 minutes - it was pretty funny to watch this play out out from my stern about 12 feet out. It was a big land lock about 12 lbs - nice fish. The point here is he caught this flat lining in the creek. The marina people also told me today that they saw all sort of big fish around their gas dock first thing in the morning.

Well me and the mate went out around 8 am and rigged for 6 lines we did (1) 17 inch land lock on west side north of the salt mine - most the radio traffic was mentioning how slow the fishing was - 1 or 2 fish per boat and they were out much earilier than us. WE did nothing more after the first fish - marked bait north of the salt mine in several places - no fish thought - mark nothing in the middle or east side - we quit at 1 pm because we sprung a leak - the bilge pumps started to kick on - checked the bilge and lok around and it was leaking around the starboard exhaust where it passes thru the transom - I had the marina pull me out and hope to be back in next week end.

  13. There are signs posted "5 mph/no wake" on the north side of the bridge. Yeah, it has been rough this year but last year I was on the gas dock - now that was a pain in the butt - everyone needing gas thought I worked there and bouncing off everything in sight - I like the view but it is rough on the 8 ropes - can't agrue that fact! The marina treats me pretty good so I'd hate to leave, but it would be nice to be with a bunch of fishing boats rather than a bunch of floating cocktail cottages.

No never was out of Lodi - always out of Glen harbor marina at St cathy's - ran a few years on canadaiquia but mostly out on the big O. Been running on Seneca for 4 years now. I do miss the kings, thought. Was running a bunch of NK 28's and suttons with good luck this time last year - not Sunday, thought - could be speed, but I always check the lure's action before trusting electrics. If you need to contact me call my cell = 585-703-2420. Nick, I think I'll run further north saturday - I agree about the opening at the end - have pull some nice fish at the drop off and alway mark them there - some late running rainbows have been popped there last week end. Seems too early for a south end shut down, so it has to be me - I ran 4 mono down riggers from 25' to 50' = zip - ran 4 coppers 300' = zip - ran 4 dipys on steel 200 feet = zip did not run planer boards - may I should have !!! Thanks for all the feed back , guys, and hope to see ya on the lake and hear you all on the radio.

  15. I'm the troll that almost lives under the bridge and 3 out of 4 boats coming and going throw a wake - I **** @ them and I get either the finger or and arguement from them - WELL I HAVE HAD ENOUGH - YOU THROW A WAKE AND I'M BLOWING YOU IN TO THE COUNTY SHERIFF AND THE COAST GUARD. The speed is not 5 miles an hour - IT IS NO WAKE PERIOD.

  16. Ran my shake down today (5/13/12) @ south end of Seneca - headed east towards falls - mistake - I marked and caught zip. Crossed over to the west side north of the salt mine - marked 1 school of bait - no fish - ran spoons, sticks, lead core, flat line, copper, down riggers, dipsys and flies and zip - oh wait minute we did catch a 2" diameter x 5 foot tree branch with out breaking the line! Shake down went OK but no releases- no fish - never got further north than 5 miles from the river. I'm baffled - should have had 8 - 10 fish in 5 hours.

  17. there are 14 locks from oswego river mouth to seneca lake - I did it in two days but I started at 2:30 pm - maybe one day if you start at 7:00 am from oswego mouth. WATCH YOUR SPEED - THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT IS NOT TRUE - THEY WILL CLOCK YOU FROM LOCK TO LOCK - AVERAGE SPEED WILL BE 10 MPH EVEN IF POSTED DIFFERENT.

  18. One of my favorite color combos is a hammered silver with black and green on one side. Another all time classic is the naples sutton spoons with silver,gold/copper and two tone gold/silver very thin flutter spoons in the #06 size. now the Naples sutton spoon company is finished and here is a very good opportunty for a lure company to fill a need for large thin flutter spoons which can be trolled very slowly for those lakers.
