  1. The winner of the Toronto derby was about a pound bigger than the fall LOC derby at 36+.

Has anyone actually stopped to think about how much of the lake is NOT fished? I only fished a limited amount of days this year, but I must say that I did not have to dodge any boats until this last derby. (If I would have fished 1 mile west or north I still wouldn't have had to dodge any.)

What are the chances of such a limited number of people in such a small space catching a very small number of mutant 4.5 year old or sterile fish?

Think about it would a sterile king be in 100 fow staging to run the river or would it be out in the open lake in 42-48 degree water eating till it could hold no more bait?

How many 30 - 34 pound kings are in the lake? How many 35 - 40? 40+? I would say by the time you get to 40 + you are in the 10ths of a percent; making no one catching one during a derby a very safe bet!!!

If one was thinking 40 pounders were going to find the leaderboard then I would guess with some statistical confidence that same person might also play scratch offs and the lottery on a regular basis. If one thought he was going to catch it .............. well I would suspect a gambling addiction.

  2. Here is the deal guys.............Troll straight.....Keep your fish under control....If you turn do so at your own risk.......If someone cuts infront of you....it is on them....Hey if they want to fish under your boat let 'em.

You can only control your own boat, do so to protect your equipment, I see lots of guys wait till the last min to pull a board or a copper cause the other guy didn't move.

Keep your lines short and anticipate trouble, be proactive not reactive!

  3. Keep those dipsys out all day with flasher combos for the big kings. Run them between 200' and 280' back on a 2 setting. Don't troll in a straight line and you will increase your chances of a big guy..........even on little fish days like today!!

Ps. Which MS RV was working at 100', never got a rigger to fire below 82' today?

  4. You may also want to check out Jeddo bait. I can also recommend the Abu Garcia 7000 line counters, a few bucks cheaper, better than the shimano. Can't compare to the Saltist as I have not run the saltist much for dipsys (4 days on a buddy's boat & just bought a pair of 50's for copper on mine). I have/do use the Garcias I am on year 3 (only about 600 hours/year), rock solid and smooth drags. What I like about these over the saltist is the counter does not hit my forearm!!! Google "Garcia 7000 LC FT"

  5. What about backlashes is it really better?

IMO the 45 needs to be fished out slowly, now understand that I have always been a 30# copper fan and except for in the early days of copper, I have run the thinner stuff. The biggest problem with backlashes occur in the first 50' with any copper, after that you can let it fly under tension. I have found that freespooling the heavier copper (all brands) can lead to lateral drift and has resulted in several crossovers for me mostly related to memory in the cable.

The 32# is super smooth, but it is my understanding that it will soon be unavailable. Myself (300', 150'), Capt. CJ of the Rally Killer (400') and Capt. "bite me" Ed (150') have all been running the 32# and we love it!!!! (so far) This stuff you can let fly on freespool after the first 50' untill you hear the back swivel click through the rod eyes.

  6. The same thing was happening with the down rigger cables. I'm thinking it had alot to do with the currents down 80 to 100, am I right? And if so what can I do to fix this problem, should I be running copper off dipsies, or was I maybe going in the wrong direction with the under currents?

If you are crossing lines you need to run less lines. Start with 1 and add from there understanding that 1 properly run line will catch more fish than 6 improperly run lines!!

    Keep the boat straight.

Never run a MONO dipsy further than 200', it simply will not work -- as in go any significant amount deeper. Replace your mono with 50# power pro or 30# wire.

Unless there is an upwelling going on you do not have to worry much about under currents, you do have to account for surface currents -- you do this by running 1 line (copper, thumper, ect) straight off the back of the boat -- keep changing direction (SLOWLY) untill you find a direction where that line (and all your lines) track straight behind the boat. Maintain that course, get your GPS sog at 2.5 - 3mph and watch your rods.

Remember, Less Is More when it comes to running lines for kings in rough water.

Got to the boat early to install a radio, got it half way in when the afternoon crew arrived. Jumped on the boat backed out of the silp, put it in forward and NO GO. Boat ran fine last evening, but no forward gear in the 4 month old since total ($800) rebuild.

SOOOO.............Call my buddy Jeff from the King and I and we load up his boat and go fishing. We set lines at the 26N line and began a north troll. Nothing out to the 28N where I take the wheel and begin a circle then straighten out on a SE troll and Boom Dipsy(225), BOOM rigger (75)miss, then other dipsy (250). Kept turning and hit a few each time we came around to the SE troll. Dipsy combos were WMD and gator/green.

What was really cool was having Bill Abraham - retired region 8 DEC Fisheries Biologist on board. Between the two of us we pretty much solved all the problems with the fishery as well as improve it beyond imagination!!!

Warm water inside pushed us out to the 26-27N lines. Found little fish in the 24-25N area found the matures toward the end of the evening on the outside. Crabface at 80' in 54 degree water took the most shots, 42' flasher and Moonshine Smitty fly down 100' was also good. Dipsys out 260 with white/green/glow fly was good early and the WMD out 240 was the late day dipsy ticket. Currents were goofy, could not get hits on a south troll, best was some form of east.

  9. Having a lot of trouble with the 5hs riggers from cannon. Have 5 of these on my boat for three years and replaced 13 mother boards. Riggers wired with number 8 wire 55amp capacity direct to riggers. Running 13lb torpedos . One time in three years the thirty amp breaker at the rigger has tripped, all other times board burns the up-down realy on the board 20amp ratted. Is anybody else having problems? Calling cannon now. Have a lot more to the story latter.

Just think -- if you needed them to make a living!! When I had this problem I contacted E-bay and they were able to solve my problem. Looking forward to: "the rest of the story"

  10. Amazing Carl!.....jeezzer....I tossed a wad off the boat a couple months ago off my 200...:wondering: ..maybe I can find it and play rubics cube with it as well

If it was the "Blood Run" stuff you may have a chance, the orange copper kinks too much to undergo the abuse of untangling.

  11. If you are slow to the rod you will loose wire and braid fish, get there give them some thumb then loosen up and let them run. That said, I have had days where we loose lots of fish on the dipsys and then the next day we catch 100%, my advice is to keep fishing, get more time out there and don't ever JERK your rod!!
