  1. Ok, blew my Optimax.  Took 3 wks and 300 bucks for the fella to tell me it was blown.  Bought a 225 Ocean Runner re-built.  Power head blew on that one too about a week ago.  Under warranty so no worries.  Here is my dilema, repower the boat NOW with a Johnson Ocean Runner 150 or have them re-build the 225 again and use that or maybe wait until something comes in to the marina for re-sale during the winter.  I've a 1989 23' proline walkaround.  Talked with Chuck Wagner at PL in Fl. and he said that with the right prop the 150 will work with speed in the mid 30's maybe a bit better.  That is the minimum he would go though.  Boat weighs 2800lbs plus gas and motor and people so I am figuring close to 4000lbs with a full tank of fuel etc. in th water.  Salt water transom on it and Mr. Wagner said that makes a bit of a difference in how the boat will plane out.  You have a bit more variance with how the trim feature works, as in a bit more down into the water cause of the angle of the transom to the stern.  19deg dead rise on the bow.  I did a formula thing where you take the weight of the boat and divide by 33 I think the number is, it might be 30 though.  Either way over shooting the weight by 800lbs or so and it still comes in at a h.p. rating of around 145h.p. at 5500 rpms to move the boat about 36mph.  Wide open throttle is 5800-6000 rpms, flat conditions and trimmed perfectly.

I am thinking when fishing this year the farthest I went out was to 600' of water.  Mostly between 400-200' though.  I mean how much power do you need to run that far and how fast does one need to get there?  I was considering just repowering with a 4 stroke but again Mr. Wagner told me I shouldn't put more than a 150 on it if going that route cause of the age of the boat and weight of the 4 strokes vs 2 strokes.  Anyways opinions wanted on what to do.  thanks

  2. I was out of Hughes yesterday p.m. and pretty rough with the NE wind kicking up.  Had one bite and because I had my clip to tight on the down rigger lost everything.  At the same time my motor started over heating.  But that's fishin.  Marked a ton of bait balls out to 85', some nice blue colored jay hooks on the FF all between 60-35'.  Can't wait to get out tomorrow and the weekend.  Lake is low though which makes getting into the marina dicey at times, just ask my prop!

  3. Its an 89 Pro LIne Sportfisherman, from the end of the engine to the end of the bow sprit it I would think a bit better than 30' it's long for sure.  Inside its' like 25.5' from the inside of the stern to the inside of the bow.  Heavy blue water boat in that it is a heavy weight when its loaded with fuel and stuff like my wife an I. I think if I recall its registered at 6300lbs wet weight.  I could be wrong on that maybe that includes the trailer too?  Nice boat though.

  4. Was out Fri evening and didn't do anything.  Went out Sat. p.m. and as I was rounding a point off Hughes when a squall came up and it happened  in minutes.  Was headed a bit past Pultneyville to set up and frankly I was amazed I was able to turn my boat around.  Holy crap.  What a year it h as been on the water.  First time I've taken waves over the bow to break over the windshield and icin glass.  I carry my dispey rods on the deck of the walk around and they were pushed back on to the floor of the boat.  Now I've been in stuff on the lake this year it seems when I've had my motor quit on me and my wife, I've had my motor bark from waves coming from the stern that somehow cavitated the prop, but I ain't never had waves in a chop like that where they are just piling on in big sets that are steep like Sat. p.m.  It was exhilarating.  Not only that but visibility was very poor and I don't have radar.  Once I got the boat turned that is when it became really fun surfing those big breakers, what a hoot.

Then went out Sun. a.m. with my wife and she decided that the rollers were just a bit much for her.  Not alot of water between the rollers either especially coming back in.  So it was quite bumpy.  I wanted to fish but she didn't so we didn't.  So we headed back to the marina once we got past the St. Pete and wouldn't ya know coming back in to Hughes got up on a set of rollers that broke under boat on the starboard side and bam set the boat down on the shelf of rocks and took a chunk out of our propeller.  That ain't happened in the 2 summers I've owned this boat either.  So that's my story.

  5. I bought a gallon of Syntech TC W3 blue colored oil for my rebuilt 95 Ocean Runner 225.  I bought it cause it was 12 bucks a gallon.  The other oil I used from Arny's was 40 bucks a gallon.  My wife is a chemical engineer and she looked at both and couldn't discern a real difference in either, such as one being better than the other.  Both are synthetic blends and colored blue.  Huge price difference though.  So what say any of you folks.  I haven't opened the jug yet so I can always take it back etc.etc.  thanks

  6. I have a older  Merc. 9.9 on my boat my brother gave me.  Works flawlessly.  However I broke off the head of the lock down bolt.  I was going to use the motor locked in the straight position so had the tech who mounted the Garlick mount lock it down.  But then decided it worked better with the Ezee steer system so was going to loosen the bolt to back it off and the head snapped off.  What would be the best way to remove it?  Thanks for any  advice.

PS  anybody know of any way to keep the engine from moving side to side with the Garlick mount.  The mount is solid enough but the engine as side to side play in it supposedly to compensate for boat and wave action or some such thing.

  7. I was out of Hughes on Sun.  Dipsey Ranger put it to the salmon out in about 600' of water on Sat.  So in the a.m. that is where my wife and headed.  I talked to another fella on the cell and he was gonna stay in closer cause he didn't trust the weather.  Well there was a bit of chop heading out and when  we hit 175 I started setting up. Running two down riggers and two dipsey rods.  Hadn't even set up when the starboard downrigger fired.  By that time we were in about 250' and heading north. Landed a nice rainbow.  Then the dipsey went off and that is where things started going down hill fast as the south wind picked up pretty good.  My kicker couldn't keep up with the chop and of course my new to me 225 Ocean Runner decided to crap out.  Now we are being blown in circles and it seems the deeper we went with the wind the larger the chop became.  My Ezee stear rod attachment bent, a set of waves hit us in the stern but by that time my main engine was running again and it kicked up out of the water on a set of 4 waves.  I have a decent blue water boat and it is a heavy thing yet the stern lifted right out of the water and barked the engine pretty good and scared the ****e right out of us.  I also had everything tangled but it worked out cause here I am!  So there ya go, L.O. can flip pretty quickly and frankly I don't have that much time under my belt fishing it to go out that far when it's like that  or has the potential to get like that.  Not only that it beats the crap out of  you when you do.

  8. Here's the deal.  Blew my Optimax 225 up.  Sucked a pito tube and ruined the power head.  So it needed a new one.  But they are pretty expensive.  So instead I buy a rebuilt Ocean Runner from a well known marina in Sodus Pt.  They install the motor around July 7th or there abouts.  Happy as a pig in poop.  We pay for the engine and a kicker bracket to be installed for my kicker.  Long story short driving it home on a Fri. night in heavy weather, storms all around us and boom, the engine quits.  Call Holy Mackeral for a tow and he says, tongue and cheek after looking at his radar, you know there are several heavy thunderstorms around ya.  He comes out in foul weather and tows us in with a couple of other friends from Hughes.  We tow the boat back to S.P. and the mechanic looks at the motor and fixes it.  Which he said was an easy fix.  We go back later in the week to get the boat, and this is dependant on if I can borrow a truck.

Now when I borrow a truck I fill it with gas.  Just a polite thing to do or give the person a 50 spot for letting me use there truck.  So we get it back and hurray going fishing. We go fishing and can't get the kicker going, has all new plumbing for it.  Can't prime the bulb for some reason.  I held it upright, side ways, upside down, breather hole on the tank open, closed, partially open blah blah blah.  So sea bags it is.  Motor runs beautiful even trolling.  Take it out again for a bit a few days later and again runs good BUT the power trim/tilt doesn't work.  I call the marina about this and they send there mech. down to look at it but it is something they can't fix in the water.

So borrow a truck again, fill it with gas and travel to S.P. to have the pump looked at.  Bleed the pump fill it with tranny fluid and good to go.  Happy campers we are.  Took all of half an hour for the fix.  Put the boat back in the water and the weather goes south for a few days.  I am new to Lake Ontario fishing and rather be safe than sorry although some boats from Hughes went out.  I just am not good enough or comfortable enough to do that yet in 6'+ waves.  I have been in them but coming in and not fishing in them.

So Mon. evening my wife and I go out to the camp and are going to go fishing, 6-7 miles out for salmon.  I mean this is why we bought the boat.  Pull out of Hughes get across the shoal in front of the Cove and bingo the engine quits again.  This time though I know what happened cause it did the same thing that it did in the storms when we first picked it up.  It turns out to be the linkage plate broke off.  Part is hard to get.  So the marina orders it over nighted from Bombardier.  This is on Mon.  So I figure that Wed we'll be ready to go.  Well the part didn't come in Tues., Wed., or Thurs today.  I found this out today.  A store in the 1000 Islands had one and they will over night it on Fri for them.  They will install it Sat.  Folks in the islands missed the P.O. today.  Which is wierd cause the stations are open till 5p.m. for the most part across the country.

So there is my tail of friggin woe.  Talking it over with the wife and if it ain't fixed right this time we are going to have them put back on the Optimax, re plumb it, reconnect everything like it should and I will find someone to install a new dressed power head for it.  I have a feeling we are getting it stuck up our keesters although the folks seem nice buthave a myriad of excuses.  But like my dad always used to say, excuses are like assholes everyone has one.  If you can't tell I am frustrated, well I just have never run into anything like this before.   We have a total of about 10 hours on this engine.  It seems every single time we use or want to something happens to it.  Granted we went fishing 2x with it.  The 90 day warranty is running.  In all of my owning vehicles and bikes in 60 years I have never experienced anything close to this.  So there ya go. Just pissed off.

PS.  here is the other thing I am thinking about, when the engine went south, the Optimax that is, I had just filled the tank up, the boat has a 110 gal. tank.  When I picked it up the second time from the marina I put another 100 bucks in it to get it back to Hughes.  Where'd all the friggin gas go?

  9. There is a fella in Ontario that works on carbs.  He invented the Quadra Jet for Delco.  Fella in our Marina took his to him and he said his boat has never run better.  I'll find his name.  He is an older gent but like I said if I am not mistaken this fella invented or holds pattens to the Quadra Jet.
