Hey all, I'm looking for some recommendations for an Ontario fishing trip for northern pike on an inland lake. Coming from NY, and I'd like to go about 3 hrs or so north of the border from Thousand Islands/St Lawrence River crossing. I'm like to find  either a very cheap cabin rental, or a do-it-yourself camping/tent experience. Not interested in luxury, and I'm not afraid to rough it. I'm bringing a small outboard boat so need a drive-to launch. Not looking to spend a lot, or do a standard "outfitter" trip. Really want to get away, so the fewer other fishermen the better. Remote would be awesome, as long as I can get the boat in the water.

I'm thinking Provincial Parks are best bet? Looking at doing this trip soon in September or maybe early October.Mostly interested in big northern pike, but also enjoy lake trout, brook trout and walleye. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! I'm open to any suggestions. You can private message me if you like, or post here. Thank you in advance!!!

Thanks everyone! Its interesting how varied the results were, even fishingteh same depths. Do thos eof you who found and caught fish have any advice for those of us who didn't? I'm not sure what I would change, i thought I was doing everything right.....?!!? I mean, I seriously didn't mark enough marks to think my depthfinder was even working right... I continued to fish it hard anyway to see if the fish were there, and I just wasn't marking them. Apparentlythey were there seomplace lol.

Blank screens in Oswego

i fished Oswego today (with about 120 other boats). Ran out to 120' of water to start looking for fish... screen was so blank, I seriously thought the fish finder was not working right. Set rigggers and dipsy with FF and spoons, trolled out to 250 of water, back in and out a few times, very very few marks. Saw maybe 2 boats with fish on. A few false releases was it for the morning for me, covered all over from 70-250 fow... and just for the record, false releases really suck when you have manual crank downriggers down 110 feet .

Sale on trolling spoons - Gander Mtn Syracuse

So I'm not usually a big fan of Gander Mountain. The Syracuse store is having their going out of business sale - which may or may not be real depending on which news report you read. HOWEVER, went there tonight, a lot of the store is pretty [picked over, but they still have a good selection of trolling spoons, heavily discounted!!! I picked up some Dreamweaver spoons for $1.60 to $2.40 each (regular $4-$6.99), some trolling flies for $2.60 (regular $6.49), jet divers, fishing line, etc. Most of the fishing tackle is %60 or more off. Anytime you can get name brand trolling spoons for less than $2.50 each is a good deal. I almost made the wife turn around and go back.....

What were you guys jigging with? And at what depth?

Thanks everyone, it was a good day. Like I said it wasn't fast and furious, I had to work for the fish, but it worked out good. I honestly think the cloud cover, and lack of pleasure boats, really helped a LOT.

To answer some of your questions - I fished the center portion of the lake, basically Sheldrake Point to Dean's Cove areas.

I caught several of those tiny Atlantics, which seems really promising for the future!

Yes I run a smaller 18' boat with two hand-crank downriggers, also use one sideplaner early in the season for surface fish. With two downriggers, I can run 2 lines stacked off each downrigger cable, sometimes 3 lines on each cable with 2 fishermen in the boat, if you are careful.

Also, I can stack sliders off of each rod/line... so basically with only two riggers, I can have up to 12 lures in the water in the water with two guys, 3 rods each. But most of the time I fish alone, so its 3 rods with sliders... ever try setting two riggers, a planer board, 3 rods, and 3 sliders while steering the boat in a straight line??? You should see me trying to net fish, especially if you hook up a double... But, the proof is in the pictures!

Cayuga report 7/22 pretty good day

Fished Cayuga on Saturday, got a few nice atlantics, a couple rainbows, and a couple lakers. Couldn't find a brown trout for the grand slam! Most fish came from 30-60' down over 80-120 feet of water. Not many marks out in the center of the lake over 200-400', did much better closer to shore. Nearly all fish caught on small hammered nickel stinger spoons, some with a little blue or green stripe. Trolling speeds of 2.2-2.6 seemed to be best. The wind had just enough southwest in it to move most of the debris out away from one side of the lake, but once I located the debris free zone, it was not a problem at all. Be prepared to deal with fleas, they are manageable but if you want to set the lines and run for hours at a time, you will be disappointed. The fleas force you to check and clean off each line fairly often, but thats not a bad thing because it improves your fishing to check them often for tangles, weeds, or fish that didn't trip the release. In any case, it was a pretty good day! I think it helped that it was cloudy, not bright and sunny... and also there were very few pleasure boats out in the morning. That combo added up to some good biting fish. It wasn't fast but the fish are there if you work for them!

DEC Waterfowl season comments needed by FEB 19, 2017

Heading to Keuka Lake, anyone reports form there would be appreciated. How has the fishing been? What depths are you marking fish? Also, are the fleas bad? Thanks in advance!

Fished Cayuga south of Wells College. Riggers fishing by about 6:45, set lines at 80, 65, and 50 feet trolled till 11 AM, not a single fish..... tried Smithwicks, Bombers, and Laker Taker spoon. Tried higher, went deep all the way across the lake, went alongshore over 80-150 feet....

At least the riggers worked good, boat worked good, releases worked good.... There were a few fleas but not at all a problem. A little grass as well but not enough to be a problem

Talked to another fisherman at the launch, he was skunked as well. Said they did great last weekend, couldn't buy a fish today. I guess that made me feel slightly better? LOL Great day on the lake otherwise!!

Catch a 27" laker on a 24" ice jigging rod on 6 lb test through a 6" hole get them up to the hole, and HANG ON while they take drag all the way back down to 170'!!!! Your heart will be pumping
