  1. Anyone have experience with the Roemer Liberator releases?  I am thinking about adding a cheater to each of my downriggers instead of stacking and thought that release would be effective.  I have never used a cheater but saves on the amount of rods in the water.  I assume if a fish strikes the cheater the release opens and slides down to the first swivel on your main line?

    Thanks,

    Jim

  2. Unfortunately the boat wouldn't be on a lift.  Now that all of you have deterred me from leaving it in against the dock, I will just launch in the morning.  From what I have seen in the past, Severne isn't hard hit and it shouldn't be an issue.  The other thing I thought about after you guys mentioned not leaving the boat in the water overnight is that I would have to pull all of my gear and put it in my truck also.  That would be a royal PITA.

One other thing I wanted to mention is that I did the newest firmware upgrade to my Garmin 73dv that includes the QuickDraw functionality.  Essentially it records the depth/topo information and writes it to a file that will overlay on the standard map.  My current maps, the LakeVu HD maps from Garmin, are way off on Seneca.  I ended up dragging gear for a longer time than I ever intended to because of it.  I will let you guys know how it works out.

    Thanks Again Guys

  3. We have done well down there and a little further north as well.  Hopefully it wont be like last year, we fished two days but didn't enter into the tournament and it was nasty.  I told my buddy that if were gonna fish we might as well enter because you just never know.  I think i am going to head up Wednesday night or Thursday morning to feel it out and head home late Monday or early Tuesday.

On another note, I wanted to say thanks to all of the guys on here that have helped me get started trolling.  This is a completely new venture for me but the information you guys have offered me has landed us a bunch of fish and tons of enjoyment.

    Thanks once again,

    Jim

  4. This will be the first year a friend and myself will be fishing the NLTD.  What can I expect?  My friend has dock access near Starkey Point so i'm thinking that I will put the boat in the day before and tie up to the dock instead of messing around at a launch the morning of the tournament.

    Thanks,

  5. This is unfortunate.  I, as well of the rest of my gang ice fish alot.  There have been times when we got there before day break and got out to our spots and when leaving had to walk in water for the last 3 feet because the snow melting caused the shore to break off as well as times when you could literally see one of your buddies sitting on a bucket and the water running towards the hole he was jigging in.  Not Cool.  With that being said, I have always been super anal about safety.  I do not own a floating suit, nor do I take an inflatable.  We do carry a long bright yellow rope with a float and a weight, ice pics and usually some other flotation device as well as a couple of towels (since we always have a flip over or two with and we all have buddy heaters).  The weight is essential to throw the rope and the bright colored rope allows you to see it if you fall in and find yourself under the ice and cant find your way out.  safety is my number one concern on the ice, I always tell my buddies if i ever go through you might as well split my gear up right then and there because i'm done.  The other thing that comes to mind is there are usually signs when the ice is starting to deteriorate and dont take any unnecessary chances just to catch a few gills/perch.  My first time fishing here was 3 weeks ago and we had a good 5 inches of clear ice (best ice you can have/no snow).  We fished the same place last week and this weekend and now have 9 inches but the warm temps and rain we are having today as well as a 50 degree day tomorrow are going to wreak havoc on the ice and my plans for going this weekend are most likely going to be suspended indefinitely.  Its a shame to break out all of the gear for 3 weeks, but that's why i fish so much when we do have good ice.  You need to take advantage of it while its in its finest form.

  6. We have the same issues down here and unfortunately we dont have near the quality/quantity of perch in our lakes as you guys do up there.  I can remember as a kid, my grandfather taking us out to fish from shore with his brother in law and his kids and  those guys used to fill the buckets until they were overflowing.  I always used to joke with my cousin that the only reason they were taking us with is because they wanted the extra perch.  At that time the quality and quantity was pretty decent.  Now that I have kids I would like to take them out to catch a few perch and there are very few to be found.  If you do find them they are extremely small.  It also doesnt help that the state stocks musky and stripers every year but none the less, a little conservation throughout the good years would have made a huge difference for my kids.

Thankfully I have some friends that live on a private lake and it has a really good perch population.  We wait till the ice hits and take the kids and our group out to have some fun.  Actually the Walleye fishing has been fantastic over the last few years too.  They (my friend and some other folks) started a stocking club within their home owners association and for the last 5 years or so each member of our group (about 10 of us) has given him 200.00 a year to continue stocking perch/walleye/bass/crappie.

I have yet to start perch fishing in the finger lake but at some point will.  My friend who owns a house on Seneca would like to do the Perch Contest that the Seneca Lake Duck Club does as we like to support that event and the small game hunt they do in the winter.  We usually bring my GSP and his beagles and have a ball.

  7. Sorry to hear you didn't make out better with the perch. I haven't personally fished for them on Seneca buy will be trying for them next year at the Seneca Duck Hunters perch tourney. I also know that getting info from the local guys is like trying to pull a tooth from Flava Flav. There's a reason they call them Seneca Gold I guess!! Haha.

  8. I didn't do particularly well up north last week when I was there. I did pick up a few smaller Lakers in front of bellhurst in 130 foot of water. I caught them on a variety of spoons/flies/cowbell 's and spin n glow.

  9. No knife. He's swimming. Blood you can see is actually from the mouth behind the eye where it was hooked. No need to keep for mounting purposes anymore. The replicas look just as good as the real thing IMO and the fish still swims to boot.

  10. Pretty fortunate to get that good one. Didn't do much otherwise. Even today was way slow. One small laker so far. Still out up by roys but nothing doing.

  11. Launched st Severne at 3:00 and fished until 7:00. Only had one bite but it was a good one. Deeper Diver 124 90' out on a 2.5 setting with a FLT green alpha ale wife at 2.25 SOG. The dipsey went off and I told my father in law to grab it since he hasn't fished this year yet. This is what he ended up with. 33" 14.6lb LL.

  12. I am heading up around 6 tonight.  I will be around until next Friday if anyone wants to hook up at some point.  I'm going to head up and launch at Roys a few times and Ill also be fishing the Long Point area and will launch from Severne.  I never launched at Roys, is there a drop box for money to launch if I am there super early?

    Thanks,

  13. Does anyone else have a Garmin Chartplotter/Sonar Unit and think that the LakeVu HD Maps suck?  I have a 73DV and have been fishing Seneca Lake alot.  The depth ranges arent even remotely close to what the contour lines on the map depicts.  I love the fact that it updates position so quickly and the sonar is awesome too, but they could sure use some work on the maps...

  14. Thanks guys... As always a wealth of information.  I think I will opt to run something out the chute and stick with the 2 riggers and 2 dipseys... As much as people get bit on the dipsey's I am still not convinced that they work!!! :)  All those fish last week and they were all off the riggers... hahahha...

  15. I have other riggers and just thought it would be easier stacking 2 downriggers that dragging 3 or 4 downriggers out on the lake. I will need to experiment a bit I guess. I have been running 2 riggers out the back off each corner and two 10'6 dispeys out each side. I'm going to add a lead core or copper out the chute and either tinker with stacking the downriggers or adding other downriggers into the mix. Thanks for the response
