  1. What's your set up for eyes in erie ? I run worm harnesses a lot. Is it always a night bite?

We use stickbaits and worm harnesses. Black and Purple or any dark colors work well. We normally run renoskys and bay rats 8 feet off the bottom then we use the planer boards with lead core and worm harnesses

  2. 7/21

Beautiful afternoon to be on the water. Left work early to go on a father son outing right outside Irondequoit bay. Started out with 2 mag dipsys on line counter reels with 20lbs power pro flasher and fly set up. On the riggers we worked a 30ft leader of flouracarbon with just a spoon, down 60 to 80. Started in shallow hit a nice steelhead in 110fow down 70ft on a dark green spoon with green dots. Headed out deeper to 200fow with no results. Turned east to head back into shallow water my dad got board and wanted to catch a laker so we lowered the ball to 115ft and within a minute caught a nice one. By this time the wind picked up and had a slight chop charted nice arks from 50 to 80 over 110fow that's when we picked up our second steelhead on the green spoon with green dots down 60 over 115fow. Lost one on the dipsy/spoon combo, lost another one the rigger. Picked up a small salmon about 17 inches on a orange stinger. Overall all fish caught on spoons / flasher spoon dark green was the color fish all around 100fow down 60 to 80. Now to the bad I lost an entire pole after my rod holder broke!!!! Had a line counter reel with trolling rod, mag dipsy set up with a flasher and my favorite spoon. Those mag dipsys pull hard at 3.0mph I had my rod holder angled (bad idea) and I guess it was too much. I wonder if anyone else has had this happen to them? I hope I am using these dipsys right , the tension is set so strong on my release because of the drag I only use 20lbs test. Hope to get out this weekend for some more fun and this time not lose any gear this stuff ain't cheap!post-159302-14691967976748_thumb.jpg

  3. I catch 90% in 44-50 degrees water. If there feeding they come up into warmer temp for bait then lay low when not. I always keep my probe around 50 degrees then have other riggers 10 feet above and below. Once I get a hit then I go where the fish are. Speed I usually 2.4 -2.7. if your catches Lakers then your usually going to slow. It i got kids with me for Lakers I run 1.5 - 2. After the bite slows I always have something in 42-44 degrees (not on the bottom) looking for a bruiser

  4. Probe For $700. I already wish I installed it ! Hope it's worth it, heard it would be and that's why I bought it. I have another graph to install, along with a network hub, 2 transom savers, 3 transducers and power amp for my stereo. So I have been dragging my feet on getting it done. Only been out on the lake 3 times this year so far. Optimum temp and speed that everyone looks for would be my next question. I was hoping to get a couple nice steelie's last night. I was to the East of the other 2 boats. Looked like we were around the same depth though.

Just mount transducers correctly. It can be difficult set up when dealing with other signals just youtube it or read directions. Good luck.

  5. I'm impressed with your ingenuity using wood instead of expensive track systems, etc. Shows you don't need high dollar stuff to get very decent results! nice job! Steve....

Hahaha yeah my home made board. It works well I didnt want to drill holes into my boat, my bayliner wasn't designed for trolling but I have to work with what I have. One day I'm getting a better boat with lots of room.

  6. I'm assuming you are referring to lake Ontario. I know we are pretty obsessed with trout and salmon but keep in mind many other species inhabit the lake. I have witnessed carp migrations on Seneca Lake for example while fishing in over 500 ft of water and hundreds of them were crossing the lake a few feet down and even went right under my boat. In Lake O there are numerous warm water species of fish and they don't all stay in the shallows while looking for food.. Steelies will often peruse to upper layer feeding on small insects and other bait out over the depths near the surface and although you may encounter an occasional brown suspended out over deep water they usually inhabit areas where shallow water has closer to shore drop offs and they are usually more bottom oriented especially as the sun comes up brightly at this time of year. In the Spring and also in the very early morning hours they can be found near shore in the shallows as they feed in there at night in summer. For steelies troll fairly fast 2.5-3.2 and run your lines back aways and also run some orange, pink, green or plain silver/brass sided or copper undersided spoons up high on downriggers as well as off the boards. Sometimes steelies will come right into the prop wash for spoons (e.g. on sliders). Browns also follow scum lines and thermal breaks all over the place and are often caught weaving in and out of them trolling out aways.

Thanks for the info. I am definitely going to try those tactics.
