  1. Well this snow has officially put a major damper on my line for a few days. Then I'll have to pull my water line for a few days with the thaw coming. 15 inches so far and stacking it on still. Missed an9ther beaver today got a toenail...

  2. Weather has been so crappy with the freeze/thaws that I haven't even got any in the ground yet. My dog is going stir crazy as he usually runs the line with me, and my son is chomping at the bit

Yea it's nice not having ice to deal with yet but makes it more work to navigate the swamps.

  3. Great to see your lad involved. I recall my oldest son trapping muskrats at 10 years old. I went with him to set and the first check. He managed to get his finger firmly held by a 1 1/2 longspring. He squealed and pleaded with me to get it off. It was hard, but I talked him through it. He was to run the line by himself and removal of ones digits from a trap is a needed life skill.

Enjoy your time with your little man, won't be long and he will be a big man.

Yea I hear that. He sets 1 long Springs now consistently gets pinched but I'd finaly past the panic point. Think he figured out if he panics and pulls it hurts more. He trys his hardest to set my 4 coil number 2s but he can barely move the levers let alone set it lol. Hopefully we get into some more fur here soon

  4. To the fella using the calf for bait, let us know how it works out for you. Ten years ago we had a still born and that did not draw them in, we put road kills next to it and they ate that but not the calf??? Smell of the meds the calf had? they don't like Beef? I don;t know.....jk

I was just at Buddy's place he had a calf sat. Coyotes all over the birth location already. I'll be setting there tomorrow and the rest of my line. Waited for this rain to pass. Will have 50 or so out tomorrow...yotes fox beaver muskrat.

  5. Stoneam2006, nice fisher. I get more pumped seeing a fisher in a set then a nice buck, but thats me.

I'll tell you it was my first ever one caught last day of our short season. I was pumped never caught one even to let go but have seen them. It's at the taxi for full body mount and I'm with you fur in the trap over bone on the wall anyday

  6. Trapper here, they are another tool in the war chest. They have a few limits. but basically are snares that are not supposed to kill. A good tool. ots of info on the internet....jk

I'm not sure where I feel with restraints. Done alot of reading on them still not sure lol. Seems like I'd want to learn them if became legal.

  7. Ok same stand tonight as yesterday.

Doe start filtering out into the field at 4:10. At 4:40 I'm counting doe 8 then 9 and 10 show up as I'm looking at number 10 through the bino's a giant buck enters the field.

He hugs the far edge and I stand and get ready. I have to pick a shot through the branches of the trees on the field edge again. I look to have a clear shot at about 160 yds.

I fire and he still standing fire again and I think I hit him still in the field deer scattering every where but he still there fire a 3rd shot he gets to the edge of the field near some swale grass that I had ranged at 175 yds and I fire a 4th shot and he stops in the grass leaving the field and at the shot his tail goes straight up and starts flickering back and forth very fast.

He looked like he went down just into the grass exiting the field.

I immediately get down and back out get to my jeep and drive to my cousins across the road.

20-30 minutes pass and we head over in his UTV to go look for him.

As we get to the spot where the buck exited the field I think I here a deer jump up. I tell my cousin turn of the UTV and then silence. We look for blood but fine none. I go into the area the I think the deer would be dead and find zero.We search around but its dark and find zero, We get into the UTV and drive around the circular horse track looking for sign and again zero.

I'm thinking I missed but back to the spot I think the deer exited and follow a trail a few yds and find a spot of blood. Then we get the big light and find another bigger spot of coagulated bright blood. We then find a bed right where I though I heard the deer jump from. The deer bedded less then 20 yds from where he exited.

We found some more blood and saw which way it was headed, into some tall swale grass and thick pines so we backed out and will return tomorrow morning to look for him.

Between the tail flicker and a huge buck bedding less than 20 yds from the hit I thinking he has to be hit hard and hurting...either my season will end in a blaze of glory or I'll top of the worst run of luck I've ever had

Are you going to get hit with this crazy snow we are forecasted for? Something to think about. Good luck tomorrow hope to see pics

  8. Long Island has bow-only zones open til January 31st. Some great state park hunts are available for those willing to make the drive to get your deer-fix satisfied.

It's also the reason why regular season tag has a bowhunting option on it. Is for the bow only areas. And if I'm not mistaken (very well could be) you can use that tag in those bow only areas any time deer is open including early season

  9. And 1 more.

In order to crossbow hunt you must purchase the muzzleloading privilege as of right now. You do not need a bow course. If you do not have the bow privilege or cannot get it bc you don't have the class the crossbow is only for antlerless only as that's the tag you get for muzzleloader privilege.

  10. Here is another that some may not consider.

You can transport your loaded muzzleloader on your ATV as long as the primer cap is removed.

Here's another interesting one. Your regular season (gun) Tag has method of hill boxes and bowhunting is a choice but tag is not good in bow season.

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

Reason is for bow only units. Also gun tag turns to either fun loving durring late season. And NYC area has all sorts of wierd use rules with it that I'm not familiar on.

  11. Yep, you are correct. Adirondaks and Catskills don't require back tag display

My buddy is a DEC officer and he has told me tagging should be done immediately. You don't want the situation where a DEC officer comes upon you and an untagged animal. They deal with poachers not tagging deer all the time so they may not give you the benefit of doubt

    Good info...

What about the bow and gun at same time? I was under impression you could carry any legal implement anytime in any number?
