Fishawk or smart troll is great ive used them. But let me tell you on my boat rigger wire angle and diver rod bends tells me all i need to know. Set your finder well enough you can learn to read thermoclines. If you are throwing everything out there and getting nothing 99% of the time is speed. If you mark the fish on the screen shooting to your riggers or where your divers are set and no hook , probably too fast. Then there is somedays fish just do not hit. Today was a tough bite all around. Remember those fish have also been in shallows feeding for 4 weeks now and making their way out to find territory, give them something different. Reef runners neon green and red dotted or fluorescent orange spoons on a chrome dodger , run some cheeter hooks on riggers. This is whats been working for me. Im no pro but if any of that helps great. Good luck ill be out tm.

I've run meat, spoons, flasher/fly but we don't have a fish hawk to get the down speed and temp but I've ran stuff from 40-120 fow

Don't know if it helps much but according to my fish hawk trolling west down speed was close to SOG within .1 or .2 at most, trolling east had to go about .3 SOG faster than intended down speed, didn't seem like there were crazy currents going on or anything where we were.

Anyone doing any good today?

We are from Michigan, drove through Canada to get to Lewiston NY area to fish this weekend. Does anyone know the requirements/restrictions for crossing the border with fish? I've fished IN Canada and crossed back into US going home no problems, didn't know if there was a difference going from US to CAN and back to US. Tried doing a google search but their info is pretty vague, figured I would see if anyone had personal experience with it so I can plan my route home (staying in US is 90 miles longer) Thanks

What radio channel do you all monitor out here? Gonna be on the water shortly, happy to share info if anyone wants to work together to get on the fish

Yes fort Niagara is open and the Wilson/Tuscarora is open. At Wilson/Tuscarora they are launching 1 at a time with a state worker monitoring the traffic

Thanks! Making the trip to fish the bar this weekend. I'm guessing it's best to launch at or after daylight right now due to all the debris? Was gonna put deck lights on the boat tonight but don't think I'm gonna waste my time from what I've been reading it wouldn't be wise to be out there when it's dark right now

Ended up doing an arbor knot just like my mono reels it was just harder to tie. Then one full wrap of gorilla tape so that didn't spin, hopefully it will be fine the wire bit on the tape the first few passes so it should be I imagine.
First one was a PITA, 2nd rod I ended up tying to a tree and unspooling the new wire, tying to the reel and then reeled it all on under pressure like fighting a fish went on much better

Getting all my rigs ready for the weekend, setting up my first wire dipsys. I've read to tape the line to the reel so it doesn't slip but what knot do you use underneath to actually tie the wire to the spool?

Mikecatt14- I'm local and fish the bar alot. I trailer a 22ft Penyann. If you use Accuweather type in Youngstown NY for location. If you can only come up here for one of the 2 weekends the spring LOC covers, I would definitely make it 2nd weekend. Honestly if they forecast winds over 12mph out of NW,N,NE,or EAST it can be pretty uncomfortable. NE or EAST the fish usually have lockjaw. We will try this weekend but not optimistic.
Thanks, my plans WERE both weekends but if it's too rough to fish most of the time it's not worth the trip no matter what. Very much appreciate the wind info.
Looking like 20+ NE Friday, 15-20 SW sat, and 15-20 NW sun. All rain. Not looking good, we will see what it looks like Thursday and decide

I kind of figured it was similar to western lake Erie but thanks for confirming. Guess we will see what the weather says in a couple days here

Unfortunately, I'm not local so I kinda gotta either make the trip or dont. I watch the weather channel app for precip., iwindsurf for wind and always take a look at NOAA too.
Am I right in guessing that the bar area with 20+ mph east wind is basically not fishable in a 21 foot boat?
I usually fishbthe western basin of Erie so I'm guessing "bad" winds for Niagara area are similar to here...east being worst followed by north?

Gotcha, thanks.
Rain (or more likely the barometric pressures etc) usually slows down our aleye fishing back home, didn't know if the cold water species were the same in lake O. Appreciate the info, as of now looks like strong E wind friday, hope that changes

So...we all know how accurate weather forecasts are(nt) BUT as of now it looks like rain all this coming weekend, how does rain typically effect the spring bite, good bad or indifferent?
Wind doesn't look great Friday or Sunday either but first things first I guess

Which Port?

Looking at my 2nd, and likely last, trip for salmon for the year. Very limited Lake O experience, last trip we managed 1 bite in 3 days on Niagara bar...of course they started killing them a day or two after we left.
So as far as this time of year I am clueless as to where to start. Where have the best reports been and our best chance of getting into some fish? Any and all help greatly appreciated!
