  1. Started at about 6 am. Fished until 1030. Only had one bite. We went west all the way to Wilson. We marked fish. We marked bait. We tried everything. IMG_20210522_091142950.thumb.jpeg.1a6f704cc144c2631a0350119e8ca53d.jpeg

We fished around Wilson and back to Olcott in 90-180 from 630am-2pm today got our few bites in 140-165 on a 2 degree temp break. Managed 3 nice steelies before wind picked up and moved the break and the fish. A friend picked up a couple immatures off the bar in deeper water 200+ I think.

  2. I’m planning to fish the river on Saturday and possibly Sun am. I’m willing to network with anyone else out there that’s wanting to network. PM for phone. Staying in my truck at 4 Mile if anyone else is too? Staying at 4 Mile that is. Sleeping in the bed of your truck is optional.

PS I may be looking for a fishing partner Sunday morning if anyone’s interested? Must be in the Spring LOC and must not be a doofus.

  3. resurrecting this discussion as I was just about to paint my torpedoes (from Troutman87) chrome.  I know the downrigger ball can be considered a 'secondary' attractor.  I guess I'm thinking of those early morning bites when running F/F close to the ball.  Later in the day I'll be running longer leads, stealth rigs below the weight, etc.  I've been reading a lot of books, and there's been some references to some color on downrigger weights, but not a lot.  I was thinking mine would be a poor man's shark, basically.  Thoughts?

  4. Thanks for the feedback, I should have mentioned I'm planning to mount at rear of boat, since the x2 slipducer cable is only 10' and I've got my iTroll for my kicker back there anyway, so that's where I'll adjust my speed.  And, well, I spend all my time looking back at my rods anyways.

Based on what's available, and the fact they're a local company to me, and they have it in stock, and I have Cisco holders and trees, I'm going to splurge and get this Cisco mount.  I like that it's adjustable so I can turn it like 45 degrees twd the helm and see it from up there if I want:   https://www.ciscofishingsystemsltd.com/shop/adjustable-fish-hawk-mount-114252

  5. Thanks guys, I see Cisco offers a nice track mount option which is swivel-able for about $50.

Les:  do you have good experience using a RAM suction cup mount?  This X2 head is smaller than x4 etc but fairly heavy.  My Crestliner has a lot of carpet on the inside and I can only see maybe suctioning it to the gunnel.  Boat is up at the lake but will take a closer look beginning this weekend...

  6. I’ve been running a Honda 9.9 since 2014. Just did water pump this offseason. Was surprised how easy it was to replace. 5 bolts and backoff the nut connecting the shift shaft and it’s off. Honda gets my vote for easy maintenance and 1-2 pull starts every time. No experience with the other brand.

  7. For you guys running Shimano TDR, which action and length do you prefer for kings? I saw some TDR in person today. There were a couple different actions. I guess I’d go heavier since my focus is handling big kings on flasher fly combos?

  8. Looking to upgrade 4 of my DR rods this year. Anyone ever use the Daiwa Great Lakes rods with the triangular grips? Thinking the 8’6” model.

I’m currently running 9’6” Daiwa Heartlands for both boards and divers and like them a lot. The Daiwa GL 8’6” rods are about $40.

Who’s running what in that price range? I’m brand agnostic but started with Diawa GL based on my experience with the Heartlands. Open to used, too, if you got something.

  9. Anyone know of a conservation style net, ideally replacement bag, big enough for a salmon net?

See them for other species - trout even walleye - but haven’t seen anything for large enough for salmon. The nylon style knotted net is not the easiest on the fish.

If I’m putting a salmon or trout back in the lake it better damn well live!

  10. Getting close to buying a mint condition center console that’s always been rack stored. I’d rather not bottom paint and I’m considering trailering. But in the meantime, does anyone rack store somewhere near one of the better salmon ports? Guessin I’ll find something on the Genessee but just in case I’m missing somewhere else. I’ll be coming up most weekends from Penn Yan area. Looking for recommendations. Thx.

  11. Woke up to some bumps on Friday morning so waited on the lake to settle down a bit. Launched around Noon with a couple greenhorns and made our way to about 350. Found some bait and took a rip on a deep diver but came up empty. Then high diver w spoon fired with a nice steelie and got on some steady action.

Flasher/stud fly 95 down on rigger took 14 & 20lb kings. High divers w spoons took 5 steelie bites and deep divers took some smaller (7/8lb) kings too. Had steady action and a happy crew. Went 3/5 on steel and 5/5 on kings. Clouds moved in around 5 and shut down out action. Called it a day.

Saturday we woke to a calmer than expected lake so launched around 8am. (No trailers in the lot on a Saturday? wife asks if everyone knows something we don’t...)

Figured to work the inside waters wind permitting. Setup 4/5 miles West of the Oak in 80 feet and worked out to 95. Took a 10lber on blue DW mag spoon on high diver 275 back. Then right out front we managed a double in some washing machine like conditions - 1 14er on deep diver w two face uv spin doctor n aqua/blue fly then high diver 225 back w mag blue dolphin DW hooked up and landed both. Second one was pushing 20. Ran jplugs deep to start but nothing doing.

By then the wind machine really cranked up and shifted to west so we called it day and made a slow bee line back. No derby fish today but we’ll try again next weekend.

Wifey did a great job steering and clearing then grabbing the 20 when it hit. Lucky to have a better half that is willing to stay and fish in 3-4s, control a boat, and still land a fish.

    Good luck if you go.

  12. Nice catch.

    Let’s see that toe!

We should start a wound thread...

Last week, last fish of the morning, a solid 18, one of the treble hooks in the jaw, easy peasy removal. Cept the spoon/hook fly outta the jaw and land point first in back of my left hand right in/on my vein! Pulled the hook and the red stuff starts flowing. Luckily a little pressure n she was good in 5-10mins. Hate to think what woulda happened if I’d gotten the barb!

  13. We started 630am in about 85-90 outta Mexico. Downtemped in 135 saw 49F 105 down? Something like that. Plotted a course to the deeps. Finally 1030 high 2 dipsey braid 250 back over 330 feet takes a hit get 18.5 for the wife. Went dead again for some time til stealth rigger 110-115 down took a pre-teen in 280 maybe. Couple more small fish on w/long release that was it til 2pm down off the Mohawk plant. Both on spoons. Getting me some Humble Pie tonight!IMG_8769.JPGIMG_8773.JPG

  14. P3 is there parking for boat and trailer at wrights?

Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Wrights Landing had plenty parking around July 2-3rd the first time I fished there.

Fyi for out of towners like me the inside of the breakwall (minus the actual launch area) is NOT a No Wake Zone. But...beware the clueless kayakers milling about the light house and outer breakwall/light.

FishnChef, call me back, tried to message you.  I've got an 1850 Super Hawk too, I'd like to see some more of your setup if that's possible, too?  I can see a little in this picture, but would love to chat, take those holders off your hands.  Check ur messages for my number.  Thanks bw

  16. Sat afternoon shift had my father in law onboard for the first time. 2 bites, 2 matures, 13.5 & 18.5 both still swimming. Unlike the morning and Friday am/pm shifts, both came on the divers targeting 60-65 feet. First fish was in 220’, the 2nd larger and darker fish came in 320’ as we tracked on a path that produced big bites in deeper water for us last Saturday. Dick did well minus picture posing. He’s getting better. I call this first one, ‘Who needs a hug?’

Both fish on bright mag spoons with a crystallina type finish and honeycomb back. Unsure of brand. Came in a grab bag with sharp hooks. One darn near gave me an IV in back of the hand on Sat am.
