  1. My parents are snowbirds, with their winter home in Fort Myers. If you want a true "fishing community" look in the Pine Island and Matlacha areas, most homes in these areas have water access and they are minutes from prime fishing. The inshore snook, redfish, tarpon, trout, etc. fishing is great, haven't done any off shore stuff. There are also some retirement communities on Estero Bay which is just south of Fort Myers. If you get much further south than Naples/Marco it gets pretty sparse, it's Everglades country. Shoot me a PM if I can help you more. I only have to wait another 15 years or so until I can do it.

  2. How about raising the entry fee $ 5.00? I don't know the numbers but it used to be something like 3-5 K entries depending on Spring or Fall. That puts another 15-25K in the prize pool. How many guys would stop fishing the derby if it cost $5.00 more to enter? Tom, maybe you should start a new poll.

  3. Well it's was a little rough and wet but we managed to pull it off today, hopefully everyone had a good time. Here are the winners results. I will try to post the complete list later today.

I hope there all right, I haven't had time to double check them. It's been a long day and now I have to go to a 3 year old birthday party :@

  4. Anyone who can't fish the derby and would still like to attend the weigh in and awards is welcome. We will be have extra food tickets available for $ 5.00/ticket. This will get you a hamburger or hotdog, chips and a drink. We would ask that you consider throwing in a few extra dollars to help cover the facility cost. You can also participate in the 50/50 raffle if you like. Please shoot me or ScottB a PM if you plan on attending and eating, we need to make sure we have enough food and drinks for everyone.

  5. John,

We kicked your idea around quite a bit today and just didn't feel that changing the rules at the 11th hour made sense for a variety of reasons. Anyone who has other ideas please feel free to share them before, during or after the derby. Our goal was to make this a fun and fair derby for everyone. Based on the number of entries this year we can easily see us continuing this in the years to come, we will be looking for ways to make it better if we can. Next year we will try to have the derby on a Saturday with Sunday as an alternate weather day, we just couldn't make that aspect work this year. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for nice weather on the 22nd.

Guys who haven't paid yet remember the deadline is next Friday. We've gotten verbal commitments for another 3 or 4 teams but until your payment is received you are not entered.

    Keith

  6. I've been out of town for a few days and received one payment last Friday that I cannot match up to a boat name, please make sure you call me or ScottB with your boat name if you are paying by credit card.

As of this morning we have 18 paid boats with at least 4 other boats committed but not paid.

We have picked up R & R and Captain's Cove as additional sponsors. With the number of boats and sponsors we will have over $ 3,000 in cash and prizes for our little derby. Looking forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks.

  7. After a year of planning we are happy to announce the First Annual Sandy Creek Shootout sponsored by Lake Ontario United (LOU). You can download derby flyer and rules at the bottom of this post. Please keep in mind that the goal of the planning committee was to make this a fun gathering for Sandy Creek anglers and LOU members. We couldn't include a lot of ports this year because we are new. Please bear with us and see how this plays out. Hopefully we have a good showing and a good time, with the help of some more local volunteers we might be able to make this a bigger event in the future. I want to thank the sponsors that have come along to assist us in putting this together. A-TOM-MIK, Legendary Products, Dreamweaver and Lake Ontario United (LOU). Because of them this will be a better derby for everyone involved. Here are some brief details, as I noted above the complete rules and flyer will be added very soon.

Date: August 22, 2010 (Yes, it's a Sunday, this is due to the availability of the weigh in location)

Start: 5:00 am, End Approximately 1:30 pm

Structure/Prizes: Largest 3 fish combined weight per boat, 2 men minimum per boat, 8 rod limit, 100 % Payout, Largest Salmon, Steelhead and Brown prizes.

    Entry Fee: $ 75.00/boat

There's a lot more information in the flyer.

A couple of additional notes not in the flyer.

There is trailer parking available at the weigh in for those of you who will be trailering.

There is no blow day for this derby. Do to limitation in finding a suitable facility to hold this event we had to have this derby on a Sunday. In the event of a blow off we will still have the picnic and will perform a blind draw for all prizes. With the sponsor prize packages, food and beverages we decided we could still have a good time even if we aren't able to fish. The real goal of this derby is to get together, meet some old and new friends and bust on Jerry about his hat.

Please feel free to PM me, ScottB or Legacy with questions.

  8. Okay I'm setting myself up for some good responses on this one. I'm curious if anyone else is having problems with skin irritation on their fingers now that the fleas have started. I know it sounds strange but the last 3 years I have started having serious problems on the hand which I use to clean fleas off the lines. I thought it was a reaction to weeds or something I touched while working or around the house. Ended up at the doctor last year getting steriods and antibotics. It's starting again now, just when the fleas started getting bad. My fishing partner Gator noticed the same thing on his hands last week so I'm wondering if those little SOB are more than just a pain while fishing. Serious replies appreciated, humorous replies expected.

  9. Tom,

I'm guessing the wicked current is your problem the last few times. I used to have problems when I had my Sea Nymph. Those lighter weight aluminum boat get pushed sideways harder when the current is like it is right now. We were going 3.5 mph GPS on the surface tonight to the east in neutral. Going west I had to run 1200 rpm normally I'm running 7-800 rpms to get speed. All I can say is hit the throttle a little on the turns to try and keep things straight or buy yourself a nice new shiny fiberglass boat. That probably doesn't solve your problem but might give you some insight. On a side note, I would always run the same weight balls. Different weights will swing different on turns and lead to tangles.

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

    ====================

Great morning off Sandy with Gator and our buddy Jeff, lost count of the number of hookups and fish landed. Super Slim NBK parked at 100 was hot early, then the Green Spinny out 260-300 on the wire later in the morning. Mixed bag, unfortunately nothing over about 13 lbs or so. Fish liked it really slow, around 2 mph most of the day. Followed Scott B's tip and change the leader to fly setting to the slower rotation hole and it seemed to really help. Thanks Scott. Heard guys doing pretty good in the 230 fow area this morning also. Sucks to have to work this week when the fishing like this.

  11. Greg,

Looking at your photo (very nice) I see you have a kicker on your 24 Wellcraft. I have the same boat and am very curious how you have it mounted, I have been trying to figure out a way to do it for years. I even had the boat to a couple of dealers who didn't have any good ideas. Do you have any pictures of the transom and set up. Any information would be helpful. I have a brand new 15 hp four stroke ready to go on but haven't figured out how. Thanks.

  12. Tiogaguy, I'm not sure why your getting so defensive regarding this, the forecast yesterday was way wrong, plain and simple. Just ask any of the 60 boat who fished the Pro Am in 6-8 foot and occasional bigger waves yesterday morning at the Oak, with no thunderstorms within about 30 miles. The marine forecast Steve is referring to included all the way to the Niagara River and it was way off. None of the forecasts predicted the wind and waves we had yesterday. Unfortunately it seems to be a pattern for the marine forecast a lot in the early summer months.
