  1. I have never had a cork handled rigger rod but I'm sure with normal use (non charter!) they would hold up a while.  Most every store bought rod with foam grips use EVA foam.  Hypalon foam is heavier but is by far the toughest.  Most of our custom rod buyers prefer the hypalon once they have used them.

  2. If you have a couple empty reels Rob, spool the wire on on first, then connect your mono and continue to fill the spool.  Then tie connect the mono to the the other empty reel, reset the counter to zero and fill the empty reel off of the full reel.  Note the footage on the counter when you get back to the wire.  Then you can get the same amount of mono on the rest of your reels.

  3. There is a video of  how to tie the nail knot on Captian Ernie's website Rick.  It is no fun getting to the end of the wire, things get puckered up pretty well when that know is hanging out there.  I only remember it happening 3 times in the last 12 years. The Penn digital line counters that I use actually measure actual length of wire.  There is an electronic gizmo that you use when you fill one that calculates how fast the spool is filling and somehow figures it.  I have spooled many a spool of 1000' of wire and ended up within a few feet of 1000 when I got done.

  4. I bought the 4 horse version of that motor last year (except with the extra $300 Evinrude paint job)  Works well but that single cylinder engine is pretty loud.  Didn't buy the two cylinder 9.8 hp because I didn't want the extra weight on my tiller steer boat.  Then I went and lost 45 pounds last year so it wouldn't have mattered anyway.  Engine is reliable though.

  5.  There is a video on the link below of how we rig a tumper rod and what the tip action will look like on a thumper rod.  Also, you get more action at the tip if you run your weight off of a 12-18 inch dropper on a three way rig, rather than hooking the weight inline bewteen the wire and leader.

Questions - In the Bigwater Precision Book, what do they say they are running behing that 1# ball?  With a dodger/fly behind it at 2.7 mph, we have to put out close to 300' of 20# wire to get in the 100' of depth range.

  6. CVA Optima here too. Started out with Powerbelts and a Bushnell banner scope and it didn't shoot the very well. Swithed to a Leupold Vari X II and Hornady SST 45-250 bullets, 150 grains 777 powder and now I have a tack driver. Not sure if it was the bullets or the scope but that is what worked for me. Swab the barrel with a Bore Butter patch and then a dry patch between shots at the range gives me a ragged hole at 100 yards.

  7. I got to fish abourd Volvo's flagship vessel for this system a couple of summers ago and it was very impressive to say the least. Really high-tech. Probably more than the average Great Lakes charter captain would want to deal with. Here is a little video from that trip. Unfotunately I think the crew was more concerened with keeping it clean than they were with bloodying the deck. I got a peek at their baits they were using for a tournament the next day and they were way different than we were running. I give the Lake O captains a lot of credit because most every captain I know treat every charter like it is a tournament and give it their all.

Here is Volvo's video of the boat we were fishing on.
