  1. Elosta meeting:

Well the meeting was pretty good, but the turnout was far from steelar!!! A lot of guys on the lake and tribs have no problem going on social media and Monday morning quarterbacking the Staff at the hatchery, but when they are given the chance address these same people, where are they??

Those that attended, going to say 85-90% were lake guys, the only guys I saw that fish the tribs were fellow guides. But yet the creek census tells us the tribs are utilized far more by people than the lake. It would have been very nice to have a packed room for this meeting, but oh well, as usual.

The new hatchery manager was introduced, and he gave us some very good incite to what could possibly be one of the issues with eye up. Time will tell if this is the actual problem. There was some very good questions and statements from our fellow peers, and hopefully some of these will taken into consideration, but only time will tell.

I want to Thank Brian and the rest of the ELOSTA staff for getting this meeting setup, and I can't wait till the SOTL meetings in late Feb or March.

  2. Actually I counted 43 people but that includes the hatchery and associated people! So yes not a large turnout!

A few statements and discussions with region 7 people:

3.5 million Chinook eggs taken so far. They plan to take more a little later. They modified the check they do on the male sperm by checking all that they will use this year to make sure it's good.

They are presently taking Coho eggs and mentioned that the male sperm has issues and are trying to find out why they are shooting blanks ! Their term not mine.

They realize that there were issues with Chinook numbers and size this year. Didn't mention anything about last 2 winters as a cause for reduced catch numbers.

Made statements regarding the Cormorant control only on Oneida lake that they do. Birds are getting smarter and avoiding their boat. Said they weren't a part of any  other area control.

Apparently they stocked brown trout without the barge do to weather conditions at scriba Launch and they were decimated by the birds.

Other items discussed briefly were Lamprey control and possible vitamin issues.

Jump in if I missed something guys !

  3. I don't think the baby pen salmon would survive a deep water release into ice cold water without nutrients. Besides, if they did I'm sure they would quickly figure out to get back to warmer more rich waters where all the predation is taking place by birds and other pelagic species trying to get a feast after a cold winter. That zone is also where we concentrate our fishing activity.

I wonder if keeping the babies in the pen a month longer or more and move the pen slowly to different zones as the water warms in a progressive manner to give them a better chance to assimilate to open water life. Of course feeding would have to be done and it's a challenge that would require a boat and folks to go out there all the time to monitor temp and feed, but would keep the Salmon safe from predators until they can be released in deeper water to fend for themselves on a better size to cope with their challenges...and yes the cormorants are a big problem. They used to oil the eggs on Little Galloo island. Not sure they are doing that so much lately.

For many years they towed the pens out into the lake in Oswego. Only recent years they haven't. I believe they still do in Fairhaven!

  4. Plans are already being made to try to minimze the impact of cormorants in this area. I'm not sure if going far out in the lake is the answer as that opens them up to other predators. What definitely needs to happen immediately  all over the Lake is high impact cormorant control. These devils are eradicating alot more than just Chinook plants.

Agreed Vince -Tons of birds flying around Oswego this fall! Something needs to happen. I see you made a stop at the hatchery recently. Many fish in the stream leading into the Ladders?

  5. Every time the charters went out and could not find kings, they went after the lakers. Of course this influences the laker numbers.

The massachussetts fisher men always said that there are plenty of cod and that their DEC was just plain wrong and/or stupid for trying to protect cod. Now the Gulf of Maine is closed because there are no cod left. Denying facts does not change them no matter how convenient that might be.

So he did not say what you wanted to hear. Does that mean that it is not true?

The way I see it he really didn't say anything other than we don't know the answers or the fish are late! Nothing other than it's mother natures fault. One other thing rollmops! You always seem to be the guy who is critical on things From Pro-Ams to Beating on well respected Tournament Teams, Etc. Etc. Etc.

Your opinions don't mean squat as far as I'm concerned!

  6. Was also were there Saturday. Very few fish in the ladder compared to previous years at this time. Better hope we get the rain and colder weather predicted! Mr. Burke may have a better idea how many in the river pools!

  7. Thanks Rick, And your right Wayne,

Between all three tournaments I'm guessing there were probably 30 youngsters involved. Great response this year and hoping for more next year. Lester Zimmerman runs a separate tournament also for the Challenge and for $30 every year Trophies and cash are provided for the kids. Lester is on facebook and Kicker here on LOU. A lot more teams should try get in this next year!

I also can't wait till next year!

  8. Been lucky to have the pleasure of fishing the past three years with my friend Tom Wojslaw's Daughter Reeghan, and his son Noah and nephew Nate.I made a statement Saturday at the Fairhaven Challenge that fishing with the kids pays off big! It pays off more with the enjoyment we as adults get in sharing our passions for the sport we love! The smiles when they catch their first Salmon or biggest fish are priceless. Sure there are trophy's and some cash that they can enjoy but that's not the most important part. Thanks to Lester Zimmerman and A-Tom-Mik Tom and Steph, Beth, Werner, and all for making these tournaments happen. A few pictures of the kids and their fish and smiles attached:
