  1. This border and port issue must get worked out. There was a fine paid recently by a boater in Canadian waters in the St. Lawrence (not anchored) where he also was given the choice of boat seizure or the fine. Some legislators have sought clarification of the rules by CA authorities. Here's one thread on this site discussing this: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=25179&hilit=canada

Here's the official statement of the rules by the CA government. It comes from this page: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications ... .html#s2x1

    Private boats

If you arrive in Canada aboard a private boat, you must proceed directly to the nearest designated telephone reporting marine site. Upon arrival in Canada, the master of the boat must report to the CBSA by calling 1-888-226-7277. The master of the boat will provide details of the voyage, the passengers and their declaration. No one except the master may leave the boat until authorized to do so by the CBSA. As proof of presentation, masters will be provided with a report number for their records. Masters must provide this number to a border services officer upon request. You do not have to report to the CBSA when you leave by private boat unless you are exporting goods that need to be documented. To get a list of the designated telephone reporting marine sites, call 1-888-226-7277 before you arrive in Canada.

I think they need to define "arrive in Canada," in order to be clear at all on this rule, especially if they are going to argue that an unanchored, non-docked vessel in open water is subject to this rule.

  2. Nice report, Spike.

It's also nice to see you admit problems that I know I've struggled with- i.e., losing lures due to long lines (or leads, or leadcore line) that are running a little deeper than you thought. It's form of support, whether you know it or not, to report your troubles and challenges, as well as your successes, because some of us less-experienced folks can find it encouraging - to know that we're not the only ones that have screwups and cf#$%s once in a while!

Pretty slow overall. Wondering if anyone else in the area worked their nets. Had all the action in probably a 1 1/2 hour span starting at about 9:00 I think. Tried hotter colors to no avail.

  4. So, I have a friend who respooled his downrigging rods last year with braid. (I don't know the brand or lb. test but I'm sure it's in the 15-20 lb. range.) He is not running any mono or flouro leader at any time from the main line to the swivel. This spring while Brown fishing I told him I think he needs to run mono or flouro leader or even respool some of his older line with 8-10 lb. mono and see if this would make a difference.

I run braid on one of my dipsy rods (which doubles for muskie fishing) and I know some of you guys do, too, but I believe you would still always be running mono leaders to your lures.

    So, the poll questions are:

    1. Would you run braid at all on your downrigger rods, especially for spring Brown trout fishing?

    2. If you do run braid as the main line on downrigger setups would you run it without mono or fluoro leaders?

    Thank you for your answers.

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

Got out late afternoon. Headed west toward the river. Set up in front of Durand Eastman. Boards, flatline and shallow rigger setup. 10 minutes in on westerly troll hit first fish on a blue/silver stickbait. 3 lb Brown. 10 minutes later fish on briefly same type of lure but threw it on first jump. Trolled to the river and out in front at the mudline. Didn't have a bump so headed back. When we got back near the east end of Durand hit another one - this time on a green razor spoon 5' down on the rigger. All fish were in 5-7' of water. Surface temp was fairly consistent and listed above.

Be back out tomorrow and expect more boats out. Hey, maiden voyage and the skunk is out!

  7. BlueEye, if you get over near Rochester at all I'd be willing to loan you my gear for your outing. I've actually got a pretty good selection of trolling and casting baits, and although I've fished for muskies on Chautauqua, Waneta, Nippissing in Ontario, and Hopatcong in NJ - believe it or not- I've never actually caught one. Someone might as well show me how it's done, even if I'm not there!

I live in Webster and work in Rochester. You would just have to get the stuff back to me is all.

Best to email me directly at [email protected] if you are interested.

  8. Art worked out for us and provided some nice chubs. Unfortunately they didn't produce for us. Fished the far south end near the buoy. Never managed a hit on the live bait. I had some action on some good sized pike/musky lures but didn't land a fish. I had one on for about 5 seconds but he came unhooked (never got a look at him). Had a short strike by a medium pike on a bucktail just off the bow of the boat.

Lots of fish swirling and feeding down there. We were baffled that our suckers didn't get any attention. We tried different riggings and certainly had some active bait.

Nice day down on the lake for sure.
