So my neighbor wants to do some live bait fishing for pike this weekend. We live in Webster. He's talked about Port Bay and we have the options of Irondequoit Bay, Sodus Bay, Conesus (although I've read that the docks are pulled - thanks for the updates, guys).

I haven't done much live bait fishing for pike since I was a kid, but he wants to do it. The question is where to get some big minnows. Any suggestions from you guys on a good location for some still fishing as well as some casting, and more importantly a good bait shop where we can get some proper bait?

Would like to stay within an hour of home.

Lots of marks and quite a bit of bait but slow with only the one hookup, and luckily, fish to the boat - 19 lb. king. Came on a spoon over 62' of water, down 52'. No other action although we felt we tried everything.

Saw a couple boats work their nets.

Friday afternoon got out and headed out past a couple boats that were at about 50' to see if anyone was out deeper. Stopped in 100' and nobody was home; couldn't see any boats out deeper so trolled in to see if we could find fish. Slow going. Got to 30' and we hit a 10 lb. king on the purple/white spoon. Nothing else Friday.

Saturday started earlier. Again couldn't get them to go. Spoons and stickbaits, spin doctor/fly off the wire. Late in the morning we were in 50' of water west of the bay and saw a fish to the surface and rod bouncing. By the time we got to the rod the line had snapped - release malfunction. Odd, because the release was working fine on our changes all day. Must have gotten wrapped around our cable somehow. Anyway, that was on a blue/yellow spoon. Looked like a decent brown when it surfaced.

Hope y'all did better than we did.

oneida lakes rocky points draw monster cats at night. they get active at about 11:00 pm and it starts whene the water get up to 72 degrees in summer. HUGE cats! make you scared to sit on the toilet after you see these things. not too many people know about it. crayfish or large pike minnows are my top bait...not chicken livers though youll only catch small ones on stinky stuff. live bait takes the big ones.

Thanks for the report. Nice job. I was on the north end of Canandaigua for the morning and just couldn't get any of those marked fish to bite. Another boat out at the same time caught a couple and lost at least as many at the boat, they said. (I would have been happy with that action!)

We were out there with you. We did just 7 for 8. Mostly small lakers - kept one 4 lber. Also a dink LL and one rainbow -about 2 lbs. We had two flasher - fly combos down and then it was small stickbaits. Seemed that when the sun shone through things slowed way down.

Nothing for us today on Chautauqua. Spent 7+ hours casting and trolling in the North Basin. We trolled through and around the holes, across the lake, and out in 12-30 ft. of water. Casting was done attempting to stay over weeds or on the outside of their edges.

My brother and I are planning to hit Chautauqa either Saturday or Sunday. Weather doesn't look great either day as the wind looks like it will be up around 15 or so, but hopefully won't be much of a problem out on the lake, especially if it's mostly out of the west.

BlueEye, thanks for the report. My brother and I might head down there on Saturday. Anyone know if there are any tournaments going Saturday or Sunday?

We will try trolling and casting. It's been a couple years since I've made the trip and although I've got a good assortment of musky gear I've never caught one. Let's hope this is the weekend!

Sounds like we were all down there Sunday doing the same thing. This is the only pike we caught on Sunday. I caught a small largemouth also. This pike was caught casting, but we spent a bit of time trolling also - into deeper water as well. Marked lots of fish but couldn't get anything to go.

Let's see - landing a king over 25# on your first pier fishing outing, and on medium/light tackle no less - quite an accomplishment, and quite a story. Well written, too.

I would recommend stepping up a little in tackle, though. This will bother fellow anglers less on your next hookup and in other seasons when C and R of healthier fish is more important it would help in this effort (land the fish sooner).
