  1. I saw an interesting quote today about the economy that made me stop and think:

"As corporate profits skyrocket, even as the economy remains stalled in a deep recession, Americans confront a grim new reality: Our corporations don't need us anymore. Half their revenues come from abroad. Their products, increasingly, come from abroad as well. With each passing year, and even more so during the recession, America's leading corporations grow more and more decoupled from the American economy. Their interests grow increasingly detached from those of our workers, our consumers -- and our economic future. That's why the current downturn is different from its predecessors: Unlike any recession in American history -- including the Great Depression -- this one has come at a time when America's leading employers can return to profitability without rehiring large numbers of American workers."

Not so much gas related but economy, which is partially based on gas. Meyerson brings up some interesting points.

  2. I think a much simpler solution would be to say a 8 rod limit or 10 rod limit per boat. At the end of the day you are only allowed to harvest X amount of fish per fisherman. It doesn't matter how quickly you get there. You wouldn't have to worry about having 20 guys on a boat with 60 lines off of the back. You could have different regulations for charter fisherman (perch parties). We already know that there are different rules for charter and personal boats. Why would this have to be any different?

  3. Daiwa makes a Kokanee Trolling Rod (HLD-KN862L) rate for 4-8 lb test, light action, 8'6". If used this for browns in the spring and walleye on Erie. This rod makes a 5lb brown feel like a monster. If you're looking for something a little heavier their Downrigger Trolling Rod (HLD-DR862M) is a med action and probably isn't as heavy as the rod you are using now. I think either of these rods are around $40 and I remember some one trying to sell them on here a while back. Good Luck.

  4. Sharpie, were did you hear about this new law. Last year a law was introduced that stated that you must were a PFD, didn't hear anything about a wet/dry/survival suit. Searched the state's website and this was all I could find:

§ 40. Equipment. Equipment required herein shall be carried on every

vessel except as otherwise provided, while underway, or at anchor with

any person aboard, while on the navigable waters of the state and any

tidewaters bordering on or lying within the boundaries of Nassau and

Suffolk counties. Should the federal government adopt vessel equipment

requirements different from those contained in this section, the

commissioner shall be authorized to adopt rules and regulations

superceding the vessel equipment requirements of this section to achieve

consistency with federal standards, and shall submit such proposed rules

and regulations to the secretary of state in accordance with the state

administrative procedure act within thirty days of the adoption of

federal equipment requirements or submit a statement as to why such

conforming changes are not being proposed.

    1. Personal flotation devices.

    (a) Every pleasure vessel and every rowboat, canoe and kayak shall

have at least one wearable personal flotation device for each person on

board, which shall be of a type approved by the United States coast

guard and shall be in good condition.

    (b) Pleasure vessels sixteen feet and greater in length shall carry at

least one type IV throwable personal flotation device which shall be of

a type approved by the United States coast guard and shall be in good

    condition.

© Every operator or person in charge or control of a pleasure

vessel, rowboat or canoe, as described in paragraphs (a) and (b) of this

subdivision, shall be responsible for compliance with the provisions of

    this subdivision.

    (d) No person shall operate a pleasure vessel of Class A, one, two or

three as classified and defined in subdivision one of section

forty-three of this article or a rowboat, canoe or kayak nor shall the

owner of such vessel while on board such vessel knowingly permit its

operation, unless each person on such vessel under the age of twelve is

wearing a securely fastened United States Coast Guard approved wearable

personal flotation device of an appropriate size when said vessel is

underway. The provisions of this paragraph shall not apply to any person

on such vessel under the age of twelve who is within a fully enclosed

    cabin.

    (e) No owner or operator of a pleasure vessel less than twenty-one

feet, including rowboats, canoes, and kayaks shall permit its operation,

between November first and May first, unless each person on board such

vessel is wearing a securely fastened United States Coast Guard approved

wearable personal flotation device of an appropriate size when such

    vessel is underway.

  5. I'm guessing that it has something to do with "surface tension". There is a lot more area for water to "grab" the boat and suck it down. The boat is sitting in the water, the bird is on top. Another one to think about: Why when you are going 60 mph is your head pressed into the head rest, but a fly is able to fly in circles around the inside of your car? Shouldn't he be killed by the rear window?

  6. It wasn't me on the rock. It was some guy on the canadian side. He walked out their around 6:15-6:30 and by 9 the water had rising and he was trapped. He was screaming and waving his 15' centerpin rod. He called the police, as well as several boaters. Th sirens went off and then a charter captain went up and helped him to shore. The captain did hit a few rocks on the way up, but didn't think he did any damage. I talked to one of the captain's clients at the launch and he said the guy was shaking pretty good.

  7. Slimy you say that musky are like women, you also said that you have successfully caught over 500 musky all over WNY. Can we come to the conclusion that you have successfully caught over 500 women in WNY also? Sooner or later it might fall off!

  8. Race Markers SUCK! The Youngstown Yacht Club and one of the Canadian clubs put out race markers each year. They are about 5 feet tall, 1 foot in diameter and there is no light on them. I would love it if someone would bring bolt cutters and remove these obstacles. Easy to see in the day, not so easy at 4 AM after 12 hours of work.

  9. I just saw this on another site and thought that I would share it.

    Hi Everyone ...

    It is time!

We need letters, e-mails, phone calls, personal contacts with your State Senators and State Assemblyperson as well as the chairmen of the Senate and Assembly Environmental Conservation Committees.

Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte has informed me that the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee will consider the crossbow bills on June 2. It is imperative that we all contact our local senators prior to that date and Senator Antoine Thompson, chairman of that Senate Committee.

The Senate Bills are: S.307 by Sen. George Maziarz and S.6793 by Sen. David Valesky.

Senator Antoine Thompson, Chairman of Environmental Conservation Committee 902 LOB, Albany, NY 12247 Phone:518.455.3371 Buffalo Office: 716.854.8705

    e-mail: [email protected]

Assemblyman Robert K. Sweeney, Chairman of Environmental Conservation Committee 622 LOB Albany, NY 12248

    Phone: 518.455.5787 District Office: 631.957.2087

    e-mail: [email protected].

Do it now!!! Let your friends and family know and ask them to help bring crossbows to New York State!!!

Yours in conservation .... Bill Hilts Sr.

I am not for or against crossbows. I do know that people feel strongly about this issue and just thought that they might want to be informed.

  10. I don't believe that changing the law would make that big of a difference. There are way to many variables involved to say that adding an extra rod per person would positively or negatively impact a fishery as diverse as Lake Ontario. First, this law would only apply to trollers and drifters. What percent of the fishing population is made up of these types of fisherman? I fish the west end and I believe that more people target bass on any given weekend then there are people fishing salmon. People give the bar the reputation as "combat fishing", I'll agree during derbies. People from the area will probably agree with me that on a beautiful nonderby Saturday there may be 6-7 boats out at the bar. If we are talking about an area this is 16 square miles (Just an estimate) I don't see how adding 12-14 extra rods will hurt. I believe that the salmon population is doing great at our end and could easily sustain more fishing pressure. I think that changing to 3 rods might benefit charter captains more than anyone else. These guys know what they are doing and given the opportunity 3 rods might turn a mediocre day into a day that gets clients to return for another trip. I feel that anything that we can do to help reach more people and bring them into this sport (without damaging it) is a great idea. If our numbers continue to fall, we wont have to worry about two rods or three rods. Also, the bar is six miles offshore I believe that people have been fishing more then two rods for a very long time. I am not condoning it, I just know that it happens. I have seen boats with two guys and more rods than you can count and I have also witnessed one gentlemen that jigs for fish in 250 ft of water with one rod. I do not think that this law would impact many or change the number of rods that the majority use. I was on a boat last year with three other people that had a 12' beam and outriggers but we only ran 6 rods. This is what the captain was comfortable with and this is what we used. Two or three rods would not change the way that I fish but might hep others. All for it.

  11. Speaking of Petroy, they have a mechanic there after years without. The mechanic's name is Josh and he's been working hard. He stays late and is willing to do what it takes to get the job done. I have been hearing good things and have some worked lined up for him a little later in the year. Also I just heard a rumor that Beccue in Wilson will not have any mechanics, just a marina. Just some info that hopefully no one needs.

  12. Yankee, the launch is easy to find. If you go to the one flashing red light in town and turn to go to the river it is at the bottom of the hill. If you leave the fort from the south entrance, the red light will be 300 yds. down the street. They just spent $150,000 (Last year I think) down there on the ramp and the surrounding park.
