  2. Great buck, Chris. I'm assuming it was on the family property. It must go some way toward making the sacrifices you made this year to hold onto the land worthwhile. Congratulations!

Thanks boys for all the kind words. Yes, I was blessed to harvest this bad boy on our Genesee County property.

I was blessed to harvest this beauty of a buck this morning. Easily the biggest bodied deer I've ever harvested with an estimated weight well above 200#. It was an incredible hunt today seeing multiple bucks and does this AM. I was lucky to have a hot doe in front of me today and this brute was chasing her all over right in front of me......he was the 23rd deer I saw today. Good luck to all

    Be safe,

    Chris

  4. Always last minute and it will be "I hit the paper I'm good "even if it's 12" from the bull

Guy we used to hunt with as a kid used to "sight in" his 12 gauge by shooting rotting pumpkins the day before the Monday opener. How the heck can you sight in a gun doing that, lol?

  5. Finally got out to look at land. Lots of thornbushes. Got ripped apart pretty good but saw some decent sign. Im no tree person but i only looked in the front of the property and im sure i saw a lot of ash trees. Googled on phone and bark looked the same. The guy is going to bring a tractor and clear a big loop out. I think once that loop is cut out ill buy it off him.

I'd wait on the loop part of this.

Instead, I'd talk with a forester first (I can give you a name of a good one) and possibly they can do a management plan for you to clear some trees and put some money in your pocket while at the same time creating better habitat and cover and trails for you. You'd get the logging trails for free and get some extra cash on a selective harvest timber sale.

    Just my two cents,

    Chris

  7. She's laying on side could she be dead

Deer will on occasion lay on their side but she will still have her ears "up" listening to what's going on around her. If her ears are down, not good but if her ears are still up and alert, she's probably just resting. She should get up after about 30 minutes. If she is still laying like that after an hour, she could be dead.

  8. Hey guys sorry been away for 10 days in the Midwest, but I got this big guy in 9h Wyoming county on October 25th in the morning. He was with a doe and grunting. He dressed out at 220 lbs!!! Also after I found him due a less than marginal shot I grabbed my son and did a tracking session and let him find him! Here are some pics of the day!

Also the processor said he had over two inches of fat surrounding his whole body

    Now that is a stud!!!

    WTG buddy

  9. 11 yr old grandson got this one with a crossbow yesterday. First one with a bow.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and perhaps you are not hunting NY, but:

1.) Junior hunting in NY is limited to hunters at least 12 years of age if accompanied by an adult hunter

2.) Crossbow hunters are supposed to be at least 14 years or older

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'd be cautious posting something like this on social media.

  10. The future of my property taken on video this morning....lol.

This was just one little video snippet of one my hunts over the past few weeks. I was blessed to harvest a nice ten pointer and see countless deer over the past few weeks. Good luck to all and congrats to those that have harvested many a nice buck and doe this year. Thanks to all of you that posted in this link.

    Chris

  11. A little side note for the 200 acres I lease. This the 3rd season on this lease, the 1st year it was crawling with deer. Double digit sightings almost every sit. Also killed to good bucks that season and saw many more. Following that season the property was logged! And I know everyone says that's great for the deer, but when when you already have as much cover as we do I think it did more harm then good. Since they logged, the last 2 seasons the deer sightings have dropped dramatically. Not sure If the logging had anything to do with it but it sure seems like it. I'm also starting to believe that the DEC numbers are way off then they think as far as the numbers of doe's. I think are buck to doe ratio is closer together then ever before in Monroe County.

Remember deer sightings don't necessarily correlate with the amount of deer on your property, it might just mean that the patterns of the deer have changed.

Logging increases cover short term (felled tree tops) and certainly can change patterns in the few weeks to months after a logging crew is in there, but long term it is great for a healthy forest as it increases forage and cover. It will increase the amount of deer with time, not decrease.

I'd get a deer inventory by putting out trail cameras in your off seasons and try and learn their new travel routes, bedding, etc.

I also think you need to create a sanctuary that you NEVER go in (it sounds like above that you want to cut shooting lanes and clear one of your bedding zones).

Good luck - read Dougherty's books.

  12. I dont have the right bowhunting clothes for this and tonight was definitely the warmest I have ever sat in NY in November. It was 63 degrees when I got back to the truck, well after dark. About the time it was to climb down, they had me trapped. Sluggishly tromping through the crunchy leaves.

Then, to top it off, I pull into driveway in time to see my 3d deer laying in pieces in the backyard and the buck bounding away. Gotta love it.

Hilarious!! Two years ago my Glendale was laying on the ground with one of the legs off and I thought it just fell over, but now you got me thinking Vince!!

Cool story - good luck afield,

    Chris

  13. I also shoot a QAD Ultra HDX fall away rest and absolutely love it

I have an Apex five pin sight but one week ago (right before shooting my buck mind you) I removed four out of the five pins and made my own "single pin" sight.

I will never go back to a Whisker Bisquit or multiple pin sight ever again. A single pin sight is fantastic - Keep it simple.

    Good luck boys,

    Chris

  14. I've been hunting my "new" property the past 10 days and things have really been kicking into high gear with multiple bucks sparring in front of me, some smaller basket eight points, and many doe but I was blessed to harvest this cool looking "crab claw" 10 pointer yesterday at 1:30 in the afternoon during 15-25 mph winds.....

Good luck boys/ladies. This thread has been fantastic.

Congrats to Rob and Dan on your awesome bucks as well and for keeping this thread so exciting!

    Be safe men,

    Chris
